00:36What did you feel when you first saw all that footage?
00:40Because it isn't just beautiful footage but it's music history
00:46So what did you feel? It's like an holy grail
00:48What did you feel when you first saw it?
00:51When I first saw all of the Summer of Soul footage and all those reels
00:57I gotta be honest with you, I was so overwhelmed
01:02Because this is over 40 hours of footage
01:05And this was also my one chance to correct history
01:11To get it correct
01:13And the first thing I did was I spent 5 months with the footage
01:19In which all I did was keep it on 24 hour loop
01:24In my bedroom I had it on 24 hour loop
01:27In my kitchen, in my living room, in my bathroom
01:30In my studio at work, at the Tonight Show
01:34On my telephone, compressed it so that I constantly was watching the footage
01:39And taking it in
01:41And the thing was, if it gave me goosebumps
01:43If it excited me
01:45Even if I was asleep, I'd wake up, write it down
01:48Okay, that's important
01:50That's how I did it
01:51So for 5 months, I just kept it on repeat
01:54And if something hit me in the gut, I took note of it
01:58And then the hardest part was, you know, just letting it go
02:04Because my first draft was 3 hours and 25 minutes
02:07So that was a lot to deal with, you know
02:10In the movie it said often that that festival was not just music
02:16But you, they were making history
02:18So do you think that that change has come or we are not there yet?
02:25Well, you know, I'll say that true change and true revolution
02:33Is a slow idea
02:35It starts with one idea that spreads to 5 people
02:39That spread to 500 people
02:41That spread to 5 million people and so on
02:43And so, you know, all of us in the world
02:48Not just the United States
02:50But all of us had a collective standstill last year
02:56In which a lot of us had a lot of work to do
02:59In terms of examining our lives
03:03Examining our community
03:05Examining our political process
03:08Examining everything
03:09And so, I know that in the United States
03:14With the world seeing what we were going through politically
03:17And with like Black Lives Matter and whatnot
03:23We're just at the beginning of really dealing with true revolution
03:29And true change
03:30And it's uncomfortable, but it's necessary
03:33Because if we don't deal with it
03:35History is going to repeat itself
03:37And in 30 years someone else will be sitting here
03:40Talking about the same issues
03:42And why we have yet to correct it
03:45And why does it keep happening over and over again
03:48So, hopefully now this film will be sort of the shift
03:53That stops history from repeating itself
