00:10One of the reasons I was so excited
00:11to direct Vanity Fair was this opportunity
00:14to do this huge, vast,
00:16epic story, which
00:17has lots of different locations,
00:19lots of different characters, lots of different
00:22challenges. We decided that we
00:23wanted to shoot as much as we could in London
00:25because that's where the book is set
00:27and it's a character in the piece.
00:37We were never in the same place for more than
00:39two or three weeks. You're on the move the whole time
00:41so we must have been through
00:43a hundred and something locations.
00:49The whole show is shot on location.
00:52We don't go into studio. So
00:53that in itself for 90 days is
00:55quite a pressure for me and my great team.
00:58We are at the Hackney Empire
00:59or the Brussels Opera House
01:01whichever way you want to look at it.
01:03Places like this are a real treat to come to.
01:09So tonight we're at Zion House in West London
01:12just one of the most fabulous
01:13locations you could have.
01:15We're standing in for the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens
01:17which is a fantastic location
01:19which in episode one Becky visits
01:21with all her friends.
01:22Take my hand Miss Sharp and we shall ascend
01:25into the heavens together.
01:27We today are in somewhere called
01:29One Great George Street which is the
01:31Royal Institute for Civil Engineers.
01:34We're shooting a
01:35interior ball scene which is
01:37a big ball before Waterloo.
01:39A lot of lovely guys in uniforms and
01:41girls in swelly dresses. What's there not to like?
01:43You're very lucky to be a
01:45location manager in central London because
01:47you really do have such a rich
01:49palette of locations. The money is actually
01:51on the screen. There are great buildings in London
01:53and you can make it work for you.
01:55So we're in Fitzroy Square
01:57which in my completely unbiased
01:59opinion is the most beautiful
02:00Georgian Square in London. These are all
02:03made out of stone and following the
02:05very Palladian principles and absolute
02:07grade A houses at the time.
02:09so the best kind of house you could possibly
02:11have.
02:13My dear aunt,
02:15welcome back to Queens Crawley.
02:18Maple Dumber is a really
02:19versatile site because the house itself
02:21is incredible Georgian,
02:23gothic-y, slightly creepy
02:25but beautiful. So we're using
02:27that very much as our Queens Crawley.
02:28The exterior, just to make our lives
02:31difficult, is there and then one of
02:33our final locations is West Horsley
02:35where we will shoot interior
02:37Queens Crawley.
02:40Vanity Fair has kept me very busy.
02:41It's a great job to have, you know,
02:43I've had to look for many, many lovely
02:45locations, all Georgian,
02:47insides and outsides, countryside,
02:49streets, so it's been busy
02:51but it's been fun busy.
