Meteorologists were tracking tornadic threats in Pennsylvania and severe thunderstorms across the Ohio Valley and into the East Coast on the evening of March 11.
Transcript
00:00you want to get away from the lightning. Also we're seeing a severe storm now into an area of
00:04southern Ohio just north of Portsmouth and this area here facing some of those hazards as well.
00:10In fact we can switch over to the high-res radar data out of Wilmington, Ohio and this severe
00:14thunderstorm warning is running from Adams County into Scioto County northwest of Portsmouth barely
00:19north of the river. So again West Union, Ohio facing some of those damaging wind and hail
00:24threats. I want to hop over into central Pennsylvania though because in the Susquehanna
00:28Valley we have a tornado warning for 186,000 people barely north of Harrisburg in the north
00:34side of the city but all the way through the northern suburbs as well. And switching over to
00:38the high-res radar data for this area the velocity couplet it's still present but I'm going to loop
00:43this and I want you to notice one or two frames before it reaches the end there was a moment
00:48here
00:49I'm going to circle the area where it happened a moment where there was a very tight gradient that
00:54popped up here between the inbound and outbound wind so when this couplet passed through that
00:58little circle we likely saw a tornado touchdown that was a rapid spin up there and now there's
01:03still rotation it's not as well defined as it had been and now it's moving through this tornado
01:09threat is moving right through the area near Clarks Ferry. I'm going to zoom in here this is right where
01:14the confluence of the of the area of the Juniata and the Susquehanna rivers come together. So overall
01:21we're tracking an area of a possible tornado through this area here. It likely did touch down earlier
01:28and it's right over the community of Dauphin the northern suburbs of Harrisburg proper and in north
01:34of Camp Hill. So again an area of strong inbound wind and some moderate outbound wind still about to
01:40cross the Susquehanna River and this is a concern here because a lot of people live in this area
01:46here 186,000 under that tornado warning 54 mile per hour gate to gate contrast right now but again
01:53there likely was a tornado touchdown just a little bit ago when that really tightened up and again
01:59just one more time here you can see that red the bright red there as it moved through that bubble
02:03on
02:04its way east that's where it was likely a tornado. So overall this tornado warning includes parts of Perry
02:10County much of central Dauphin County and northern sections far northern Cumberland County as well
02:16north of Camp Hill until 6 30. So we'll keep a close eye on that heading a little farther south
02:22we are dealing with an ongoing severe thunderstorm threat for a few areas off to the west of DC.
02:27So right over Winchester Virginia severe thunderstorm warning in progress for the city
02:31plus Frederick County northern Clark County and then down near Leray Caverns in Page County
02:37Shenandoah County southern Warren County south of the area of well here we get into the area south of
02:43Fort Warrior Fort Royal and into Rappahannock County a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for you as
02:49well. So those are the biggest concerns we'll keep a close eye on that tornado threat just north of
02:54Harrisburg in the next half hour or so. Power outages were up to 10,000 addresses without power in Ohio
03:00right
03:01now. So that's a concern due to the recent damaging winds rolling through the area and here we have our
03:07tornado watch boxes till 8 p.m. to the east and to the west including Harrisburg where the north side
03:12under a tornado warning until 6 30.
