00:58June and along with my parents Min and Bob we're looking for a house in Blaine Washington nice nice
01:06to really nice here we currently live in Los Angeles California and my parents live in Redmond Washington
01:14we try to at least do like one family vacation together every year and I guess somehow it always
01:21kind of involved going to the beach and there's a beautiful Beach Bay hiking area in the state park
01:28and that's how they first discover Blaine so Blaine is on the coast of Washington it's right next to the
01:37border of Canada the beaches here it's a little bit more sandy and rocky but you definitely don't get
01:43this type of scenery you know the beaches that we regularly see it really feels like you're in nature
01:50it's a very friendly little town everything just seems like it moves slower there's a lot of small local
01:57businesses there are people picking oysters it's really welcoming my dad is a handyman and my mom Min she's
02:06an engineer when my dad first came to America he definitely struggled with speaking English because
02:13it's not his native tongue I remember when we were little we will always go to the public library and
02:20he'll
02:20always look at home improvement books to teach himself how to do plumbing electrical and even how
02:26to build houses the ideal beach house will be within walking distance to the water maybe two bedrooms at least
02:35one bath and what's also important is the lot size or the potential to add and expand to that house
02:42when we do
02:42purchase the house and when we're able to have access to it I believe that every time we come up
02:48to Washington
02:49we'll visit the beach house and also whenever we're not here I know that Bob and Min will come up
02:56every
02:57month having the potential for short-term rental is a plus 20 years ago when my parents first came to
03:05the US they basically had to start their life all over again having a vacation home wasn't anywhere in
03:12their mind having a house that's close to the beach is kind of like the pinnacle of their American dream
03:19and you know for us we just wanted to you know do what we can to really help them to
03:24make their dream
03:25come true we have four hundred fifty thousand dollars pulled together by the whole family for buying the
03:31house and for renovation I found a few listings here in Blaine and hope that we can tour some houses
03:38and
03:38hopefully we find one that we all like the first time we got here we love it a lot of
03:52water activities
03:53fishing and boat launching it's a small quiet time and the beach nice yeah so we're going to look at
04:03Birch Bay view it's a two-bedroom and one and half bath a little under 1200 square feet is listed
04:12at 425 so it leaves
04:15us with about 25,000 for renovation okay it looks like it's pretty close to the water pretty close to

04:23estate part that's great all right we're here all right this is the house nice there's gonna be a lot

04:34restoration to be done yeah I'm not a fan of the yellow color so repaint it the outside needs a

04:40work but let's go ahead and go inside okay so this is the house a lot of green here yeah

05:46here so it's connected to the bedroom oh kind of good size but it's definitely old maybe we should go

08:19price the price is listed at 440 000 so it's higher on our price range leaving about only ten thousand
08:29dollars for renovation so that's something to think about but I like that has a three bedrooms which is
08:37a plaster point yeah it looks a little bigger with 1500 square feet we are here so this is the

14:26be able to do maybe a hundred dollars a night but maybe if we add another bedroom can potentially get
14:33to one fifty two hundred yeah that's a room for expansion so something to think about
14:48so we saw a lot of great homes and then one of them is clearly a winner salmon away it's
14:54a good
14:54size but the price it's a little higher on our budget oyster on deck the price is really good but
15:03then there's just a lot of work to do and now the drumroll moment we decide to go with Birch
15:11Bay view
15:15it's really close to the beach it's less than two three minutes walk the house was listed at four
15:22twenty five thousand but we're able to get it down to three sixty I think the renters will love it

15:29think we'll love it I think it'll be a great time but you know we definitely have a lot of
15:34work to do
15:48let's talk about the exterior of the house so I really like the idea of creating a greek island by
15:55by using white paint with a deep blue accent I think it will look really unique and vibrant and the
16:01house will really stand out given that it's so close to the ocean
16:05let's go ahead and check out the sauna that's good idea oh wow for the sauna it's just refinishing some
16:16of
16:16the woods putting new cedar and that's pretty much it it's gonna look really nice okay and then this
16:22outside area we probably need to refinish the pathway yeah switch out the wood power wash the deck maybe repair
16:31some of the wood put a new hot tub here it's a nice space for it and then you get
16:37a water view hmm it's a
16:40good place and maybe get rid of that chicken on the top oh it's a little weird yeah you don't
16:48like chickens
16:52okay so I think that for the living room we'll just go ahead and change all the flooring to match
16:58the rest
16:59of the house to LVP so you don't have the tile and all the mismatched flooring and then we'll repaint
17:07everything to freshen it up okay I don't know I kind of wanted to do something a little bit more
17:14creative with the color maybe blue board and batten some wallpapers new flooring keep the tub and the
17:23toilet but new mirror and just keep this okay yeah but just change the color right yeah yeah yeah cool
17:31not too much job yeah not too much work here that's good and then for the kitchen I think that's
17:39where
17:39some of the big work has to come in um for the cabinet um I think it's still pretty good

17:46so maybe we just resurface it and repaint it but we'll need a new stove in this area a butcher

17:56maybe easier to work with and then depending on you know what color we want to do the cabinet we'll
18:03think about the backslash okay so for this bathroom we're not going to keep it maybe converting it into
18:10a second bedroom in the first floor so is that still what you guys are thinking here entire wall yeah
18:19push out maybe about two feet to my uh small bedroom okay sounds good let's head upstairs
18:29so I think that for this room LVP flooring all throughout adding some cabinets and floating shelves
18:37just making a small kitchenette in this space I guess we keep the sink there and turn that into a
18:43dining
18:44space putting a wall behind the tv and then we can put a couch in this space try to refinish
18:51the bathroom
18:52give it a new door do some decorative paint or wallpaper maybe to just give it more of a finish
18:59so
19:00you know it's not just like a toilet there then we are keeping this fireplace do not have to fly

19:07you I want to keep this one um we'll probably refinish it and repaint it okay so I think that

22:25a little bit good news it's not damaging too much we need all insulation here but we don't see a

22:33flood damage though so just the flooring that's yeah just the floor after he sliced off the dry
22:40wall we're able to get a clearer picture and it seems like it's better than we expected we probably
22:45have to replace some of the rotten wood and then the damage underneath the kitchen floor good news
22:52mostly good news just looking at the kitchen how open it is i'm excited to see how it'll look once

22:59have the floating shelf the floor finish and then putting all the cabinets back in i think we made a
23:05lot of
23:05progress we just need to work on it a little bit more and i think it'll be a great product

23:10end so yeah i'm very proud
23:21all right let's do this we're back at the house and we're choosing the flooring i think that flooring
23:28it's probably one of the biggest projects we have to tackle so it's a pretty big decision because if
23:34we choose the wrong one the whole house is going to end up with an ugly flooring that we're going
23:38to
23:38stare at i picked up three lvp flooring samples and the first one i kind of like it because it
23:47gives a
23:48coastal kind of vibe the second one you know the oak color it's great it gives a lot of warmth
23:54to the room
23:55the third one it's a little bit different it's on the darker side it's a walnut shade these are like
24:02stickers yeah so you just peel right boom yeah yeah so this will be your dad you know working through
24:09the house yeah this anyone could just go whoop and done yeah i guess you know simply put and just
24:18kind of
24:18put some numbers to those different samples this one is the most expensive one around 250 per square
24:26foot so for a 1200 square foot house it's going to be a little under three grand and then for
24:34those two
24:35i think it's 129 per square foot so for our house it will be a little under 1500 so we
24:43have to really
24:44think about our budget and which one to pick for me the oak color it's just very casual and normal
24:51so i don't think it will go bad with anything so i think it's like the easy choice i think
24:57that it's
24:57too yellow for the house let's see i do like you know the material here just because i think that
25:05with a stick and peel it might not be as durable and waterproof i know it's a little bit more
25:12on the
25:12pricier side but i think that it's worth it i know my dad's gonna probably hate us for choosing this
25:18but i mean just leave your phone off for a while you'll be okay all right let's go ahead and
25:24maybe
25:24place an order and then we can get started let's do it i think you're gonna have to talk to

25:40okay since i've been gone my dad has been working on fixing some of the flood damage so he replaced
25:47all the stuff floor on the kitchen area and he's also putting on waterproof drywall in the downstairs
25:54area we're turning the old kitchen into a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom because we wanted to
26:02move the kitchen upstairs to prevent future water damage from the flooding the upstairs kitchen that
26:09will be the only kitchen at the house today we are really excited to do the painting we just wanted
26:17to brighten up the space and i think that downstairs it can tend to be a little darker so we're
26:23just
26:24doing white dad tend to like more of like the warm yellow color and i was like no more yellow
26:30please i think that you know a coat of paint will really refresh the whole entire area
26:59oh you can cut it too yeah you're a strong guy that's still young now the paint has dry we're

27:06to start with the flooring in the new bedroom we bought about 30 boxes of flooring
27:16with putting on flooring you just have to really prep the floor making sure that it's clean that's why
27:22you see we keep on like sweeping the floor just making sure it's like spotless vacuum it you need
27:40to see the flooring sample you just see like one piece of it and you never know how they look
27:45in the room
27:46and with the lighting and with the wall color so it's really satisfying that it didn't look bad
27:52so that was knock on the wood
28:04okay there are two bathrooms on the bottom floor one is in the bedroom the other one is the main
28:12functional full bath it has the dated look so we're gonna do some board and batten do you want to
28:18nail it
28:19no i don't know how i can hold that
28:29and then we went ahead and painted it blue
28:36and then fun beach vibe wallpaper on the rest of the wall so we're all doing this for the first
28:43time

28:55that actually match perfectly wallpaper can really change up the space and make it really fun

29:11oh i don't like to do this stuff oh but i'm hoping that at the end everything is going to

29:33my dad picked up a wood-burning hot tub from his friend his friend was giving it away so i

29:39was the perfect place to put it at its forever home okay okay that was a try oh perfect
29:50with this hot tub since it was used there wasn't any instructions on how to put it together
29:57oh no no no no okay but it's going well i think it's just supposed to come together like a

30:06this is quality family time high quality it burns wood it's different than a traditional hot tub i never
30:15tried it at the end there's no tub inside or whatnot but it will be waterproof it's a hot tub
30:23we're almost
30:24done putting it together the problem is this is the last piece and when we're trying to put it in
30:32it doesn't fit it doesn't seem like we have big gap all the gaps add together maybe two inches so

30:40just trying to figure out how to salvage this and then just put the last piece in on my phone

30:48trying to look up like maybe there's an instruction menu that we can follow my dad didn't even bother
30:53he's like i'm just gonna figure it out on my own it doesn't seem like we have big gap but

32:26for the new kitchen upstairs we're reusing the old cabinets from downstairs to save some money

32:38for the kitchen but of course my dad changed his mind again and we ended up using a formica
32:43countertop for the kitchen and use a butcher block countertop for the island i don't think that formica
32:49has the best reputation but i think that if we use the right element the right design it will end

33:09really great one of the unique projects is the sauna but we knew that there's some work that needs to

33:15done to it so my mom and my dad are demoing ripping away the siding and also install a new
33:23siding for the
33:28sauna my dad tried to salvage the old chimney but it's clogged so he's just trying to change it to
33:36a new one
33:38my dad got this maroon siding material from the hardware store even though we're going to pay the
33:44house more of a white and blue so i'm not really sure how that really reddish color fits in with
33:51that
33:51overall theme but my dad is pretty adamant about just kind of keeping the way it is
34:11oh yeah it's walking see enjoy the sauna after the chimney is installed he did a test and it seemed
34:19like
34:19the new chimney is going great and i'm excited to try it out
34:33so we had a hard time deciding on the backsplash tile choice but we ended up picking out a floral

36:42mean type of vibe but my parents kind of felt like the blue looks too dark and moody so they

37:23completely different since the last time he's seen it i'm gonna pull oh good how will pay off this whole
37:32entire process has been hard challenging stressful but at the same time really rewarding and it's really
37:38special to make this dream come true as a family together are you ready i'm nervous why
37:45i don't know you would like it or not so i'm really excited to show june that place and you

41:41and two hundred dollars so we saved a lot of money and i tell my dad maybe we can use
41:46the money for a
41:47nice vacation or something we're really proud of the work that we've done um given the short amount
42:03of time and given limited resources limited budget and you know we kind of try to roll up our sleeves
42:10and just did everything ourselves oh i'm so proud of you
42:14you know we finished this huge project now pressure's off
42:22um honestly there was not much pressure for me what do you think i'll have in the party

42:42and i think that you know by us doing that it's definitely fulfilling his american dream
