00:00It's now time for First Things First, a fantastic weekend of racing at Santa Anita.
00:04This past weekend, I caught up with the connections of the San Felipe,
00:09the Grade 1 Big Cap, and of course, the Grade 1 Behold a Mile.
00:21And they're off in the B-Wing Hughes.
00:24Celebrate Splendora taking down the Grade 1 Behold a Mile.
00:27Here with the jock, J.J. Hernandez and, of course, owner Michael Tala.
00:31J.J., that was a pretty nice birthday present. Happy birthday.
00:35Did you ever think you would get an opening quarter in 23-2 for your birthday today?
00:40Well, you know what? She's really fast out of the gate.
00:44And she was doing that really easy.
00:46And, you know, it's always just big, like, probably go a little faster or a little slower.
00:50But today, the first fraction was just perfect for her.
00:54Michael, this Philly has answered every single question.
00:57You know Bob joked when he walked down here, he should have run her in the big cap.
01:00What do you think about that?
01:01Well, Bob was thinking about it, but a mile and a quarter, that's a tough ask for her.
01:07I'm not sure she could go that far.
01:09But we're going to head back east, and we're going to take on the big girls back there and see
01:14what happens.
01:15But the end goal is to go back to Breeders' Cup and try and repeat, and maybe we can win
01:20an Eclipse Award this year, we hope.
01:24And they're off in the San Felipe.
01:26Joined by Peter Floor of Speedway Stables, we get to talk Patente, the winner of the San Felipe here, Pete.
01:32Let's talk about the race.
01:34Any anxious moments for you watching that?
01:37Because it looked like he needed every piece of ground today.
01:40Well, I thought there would be a lot of pace, and there was, and so Juan laid just off that
01:47pace, and he's bred for this distance, Zoe.
01:51But, you know, he's only had been in a sprint race, so you kind of cross your fingers and give
01:56it a little of this and hope something positive happens.
01:59But I thought Juan did a great job laying behind him, going around the far turn, he gave him a
02:04kick, and then we all started getting excited.
02:10And they're off in the Santa Anita Handicap.
02:13Grade one big cap goes to this guy, Richie Baltus, alongside his jockey, Diego Herrera.
02:20British Isles, Richie, it's your second big cap.
02:22How are you feeling?
02:23I feel great.
02:24Yeah, I was a little worried around the turn, but you know what?
02:28Hey, I don't know.
02:29I mean, Diego did a great job with this horse.
02:32I thought around the turn, he was asking him, and I didn't know if he had anything left, and then
02:36all of a sudden he bursted away, and I was just ecstatic.
02:38You know, it meant a lot to the owners, and it meant a lot to Diego, his first grade one
02:44win, and it's, you know, keeping it in the, keeping it close.
02:48Thank you, buddy.
02:53Just a reminder that we do continue racing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
02:57Do join us on Saturday for a George Mott burger.
03:02He is the burger king.
03:04If you like fried onion smash burgers, just show up at Santa Anita.
03:09We'll give you a cold brew to go with it.
03:11The place to be.
03:12I know Randy could really use a George Mott burger, couldn't you?
03:17Never, never had one.
03:18It sounds good, though.
