00:00I've got one!
00:01Oh no!
00:02Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:04Biscuits are always my first thing.
00:07Check in to each other's places.
00:09Hello, lovely to see you again.
00:10Good morning.
00:11And check out one another.
00:13Barbara, what about you trying to do a Birmingham accent?
00:16I don't think I'm very good at that, really.
00:22Today, there are farmyard frolics.
00:24Elizabeth's got no manners.
00:26No one's ever said that to me before.
00:28As they battle.
00:29There were quite distinct cleaning issues, again.
00:34To be named best value for money.
00:36How clean was the Red House?
00:38Oh no!
00:40Oh no!
00:48The second visit of the week is to Longstow in Cambridgeshire
00:52and the Red House, owned by Carl Webb,
00:55ably assisted by Liz Houlihan,
00:57and where the head honchos are hit.
01:00Carl is a great boss, great friend.
01:02I enjoy working here.
01:04I find it really weird how we can be having like a really stressful shift
01:08and I speak to you and you're like, oh, I'm loving it.
01:14Those who work their socks off can find respite in one of seven rooms for up to £165 a night,
01:21including breakfast,
01:22in a place where the hosts feel they've backed the right horse.
01:26The rooms here are converted stables, so they've got a real country feel to them.
01:31We've got some nice beams in there, they're well equipped, they're with nice modern decoration,
01:36but you can certainly feel that it is a converted barn that you're staying in.
01:40And the friends think they offer a clean getaway.
01:43When it comes to cleanliness, we like to make sure that we've checked everything twice,
01:48in all the nooks and crannies.
01:49It should look like you're the first person to use that room.
01:52Yeah.
01:53About to arrive are today's first guests,
01:56a pair prone to be different.
01:59Did you know, Barbara, that a shrimp's heart is in its head?
02:03Yes, I knew it.
02:04How did you know that?
02:05Because I suck its head off when I eat them.
02:08Full of flavour, our friends and colleagues Barbara Cushing and Elizabeth Good,
02:13of Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast in Thursford, Norfolk.
02:17On the last visit, over a tipple, similarities were served.
02:21I'm a fifth generation landlord.
02:23We also run an old pub.
02:25So today, Barbara and Elizabeth are pouring over the possibilities.
02:30What do you think this is going to be like?
02:33I think it's going to be very charming.
02:35Something oldie-woldie, but with a modern twist.
02:42It looks very smart, and it's been beautifully restored.
02:45So let's go in and see.
02:46Let's.
02:48Good morning.
02:49Good morning.
02:50Welcome to the Red House.
02:51You'll be staying in one of our medium rooms at £145 per night.
02:55Includes breakfast.
02:56Have a lovely stay.
02:57Thank you so much.
02:59See you later.
03:01Wow.
03:02It's absolutely beautiful.
03:03Great chandelier, something to swing from.
03:07With Barbara and Elizabeth in the party mood,
03:09today's next guests are debating a dynamic dialect.
03:13Your accent's changed since we moved from Birmingham.
03:17They all take the Michael out of me in Nottingham.
03:20They all start shouting,
03:21Oh, chips and gravy, chips and gravy.
03:25Pouring it on thick are couple Helen Robertson and Carl Gibbs,
03:30owners of Peacock Lake in Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire.
03:33Last time out over breakfast, the competition was on the menu.
03:37We're quietly confident about the offerings we have.
03:41I'll have my glasses on for that day.
03:44So today, Helen and Carl have high hopes.
03:48I imagine it's going to be really nice,
03:49but I think they could just go above and beyond.
03:53I really can't wait.
03:55This is nice.
03:56I like the building.
03:58Yeah, yeah, really nice.
03:59Shall we go and have a look?
04:00Yeah.
04:01Come on then.
04:02Good morning.
04:03Good morning.
04:03Welcome to the Red House.
04:04You'll be staying in one of our large rooms,
04:06which is priced at £165 per night.
04:09Thank you very much.
04:12Wow.
04:13This is lovely.
04:15Really great size room.
04:16With bigger being better for Carl and Helen,
04:19today's final guests are harking back to simpler times.
04:23As a kid, we had a man that came in the pub
04:25and he brought us in some mice brains.
04:29That's nice.
04:30We used to put them in our pencil cases at school
04:32and then if someone asked for a rubber,
04:34we'd say, oh, yeah, it's in there,
04:35and it would actually be like a mouse brain.
04:38Full of bright ideas,
04:40our married couple Fiona and Michael Farrow
04:42of the Three Horseshoes in Warram, Norfolk.
04:46When they hosted last time...
04:48Hi.
04:48Hello.
04:49Good morning.
04:50Helen and Carl.
04:51Why?
04:51I think there's bags of character.
04:54Dished the dirt.
04:55This is from one wipe.
04:57It's not acceptable.
04:58There's dust in the corners.
05:00Look at this.
05:01There's hairs everywhere again.
05:03There's not just a few, there's a lot in here.
05:05And come feedback, they came clean.
05:08I'm going to say it's a three.
05:10It's a three.
05:11Oh, my God, that's really low.
05:13But today, the couple are sweeping it under the carpet.
05:17It will be interesting to see how Helen and Carl are today.
05:21I'm certainly not going to bring any tension,
05:24because I don't want it to affect Liz and Carl in any way.
05:27No.
05:28Good morning.
05:30Good morning.
05:30Welcome to the Red House.
05:31You'll be staying in one of our medium rooms,
05:33priced at £145 per night.
05:36Have a lovely stay.
05:40Wow.
05:42Absolutely stunning.
05:43Lovely high ceilings.
05:44I love the beams.
05:46I really love the velvet chair.
05:47It's always nice to have a chair.
05:49Looks comfy.
05:50With the hosts out of the way,
05:52the guests can see the colour of their money at the Red House.
05:56Great chandelier.
05:58That is...
05:59Not a single cobweb.
06:00That is a difficult thing to keep clean.
06:03Nice fat pillows.
06:04Oh, yeah.
06:05My head's going to enjoy being on that.
06:07This is really high-quality floor rain.
06:10Yeah, it looks stunning, I think.
06:12Personally, I'm not so keen on these.
06:15I'm not sure how easy it is to keep them clean.
06:18Look at that.
06:20Lovely clean bed.
06:21Can't wait to get in it later and snuggle.
06:24The drawers have got bits in them.
06:26Just needed a clean wipeout.
06:29Look.
06:29Also, there's dust in there.
06:31OK, let's see how clean it is, Elizabeth.
06:35Immaculate.
06:36I wonder what's in here.
06:38It's a fridge.
06:39Oh, my God.
06:40I love a fridge in a room.
06:41That's a nice extra touch, isn't it?
06:42This should have been picked up and vacuumed.
06:45You've got all bits.
06:47Again.
06:48Oh, wow.
06:49Wow, wow, wow.
06:51Everything is pristine.
06:53There isn't a speck of dust anywhere.
06:55I don't feel anyone's stayed here before.
06:58No.
06:59Really nice offering, but I would add some decaf coffee.
07:02Definitely.
07:03I love, I love the door.
07:05But...
07:06Oh, there's no handle, is there?
07:07No, we need a handle.
07:08Absolutely, yes.
07:10Room inspections almost over.
07:12Fiona and Michael reflect on the place.
07:15I think we might be on the wrong rivers.
07:17Shall we swap?
07:17Shall we swap?
07:19Much better.
07:21Barbara and Elizabeth...
07:22What is it?
07:23This is a lamp.
07:24...are a buzz.
07:25I thought it was one of these...
07:31Things.
07:32And Helen and Carl...
07:33The back of the telly's got all dust on it.
07:36...leave their mark.
07:37I'll put my name there, look.
07:39Yeah, a little bit like that.
07:46Cambridgeshire is both the flattest and most low-lying county in the UK.
07:51But today, hosts Carl and Liz are hoping for a highlight
07:55with a trip to Highland Cow Cottage,
07:58where visitors can get up close and personal with eight cows.
08:03You've got white trousers on to go and see Highland cattle.
08:07Yes, but they're...
08:09Elizabeth.
08:10Hello.
08:11Hello.
08:12Today, the group are joining the herd
08:14under the guidance of farm manager Charlie.
08:17This is a female cow.
08:19Her horns are skinnier,
08:20and they sweep up towards the sky,
08:22whereas Alfie's, his horns are much thicker.
08:25Whoa.
08:26Whoa, whoa, whoa.
08:28Is she telling you off?
08:29She is a bit, so she's in charge of the whole herd.
08:32She's trying to whip me into shape a little bit.
08:34Is she in charge of Alfie as well?
08:36Mm-hmm.
08:36So normally it's the bull that's in charge,
08:38however, we got Elizabeth,
08:40and then we added Alfie much later,
08:43and then she's just remained in charge.
08:44So we've got another Elizabeth here then,
08:46so that makes three of you.
08:48She looks beautiful to me,
08:50so she's just joining the club.
08:51But she's in charge.
08:53Absolutely.
08:54They are beautiful beasts.
08:56Absolutely gorgeous.
08:58I can see you riding a Highland cow, Elizabeth,
09:02holding on to those big horns.
09:05Bovine's beloved.
09:06Next, the guests have food for thought.
09:09Up, up, up, up, up.
09:10Oh.
09:11You've made a best friend there, Carl.
09:12I have, yeah.
09:13Here you go.
09:14Can you see it?
09:15Ouch!
09:15Oh.
09:17Nearly, Barbara.
09:17I'm just a bit scared.
09:19They are beautiful and terrifying.
09:21Look at that tongue.
09:23Elizabeth's got no manners.
09:26No-one's ever said that to me before.
09:29And while the group milk the day out...
09:32Oh.
09:32Oh, a bit of slobber there.
09:34...feedback hasn't been utterly forgotten.
09:38Carl and Helen's low score of three,
09:40I'm not sure it was fully justified,
09:42but we'll find out.
09:44I still feel a three was very low.
09:46I 100% stand by what I...
09:49..that...the feedback we gave.
09:51I was dreading meeting them, to be honest,
09:53but I took our comments on the chin,
09:55and they're just normal, which I was glad about.
09:58With the herd harmonious for now,
10:01the group are hungry to sample another of the farm's offerings.
10:05Would you like a cup of tea?
10:06Shall I be mother?
10:06A Highland cow-themed afternoon tea.
10:09It's like being in Alice in Wonderland.
10:12I hope I could take the pill that makes me a little smaller.
10:16How did everyone find the Highland cow experience?
10:19It was fantastic.
10:21How did everyone feel about having another Liz in the group?
10:24There's always room for one more Liz.
10:25You can never have too many Lizes.
10:27Carl and Liz are fantastic hosts.
10:30The afternoon has been a big success.
10:32Definitely.
10:33Loads of fun.
10:34Here's to no ball feedback.
10:35Cheers.
10:36Cheers.
10:37And with the day out thoroughly milked,
10:40Carl and Liz hope to keep moving in the right direction.
10:44Let's hope those Highlands are the only moody cows we encounter.
10:48Oh, let's hope so.
10:55The second visit of the week is to Longstow in Cambridgeshire and the Red House, where hosts
11:01Carl and Liz have invited their guests for a drink in the pub's bar.
11:05Let's have a cheers.
11:07Cheers!
11:08And as the group taste their tipples, Helen probes the partnership.
11:13How did you and Liz meet Carl?
11:16Liz was dating one of my good friends.
11:19So you're not dating him anymore?
11:21No, I'm not.
11:22Are you dating now, Liz?
11:24I'm not.
11:25You're not?
11:25No.
11:25Wow.
11:27Okay, I've got a line-up for you.
11:29Oh, God.
11:30If she's as successful for you as she has been for me, nothing will change.
11:36How long have you been trying to set Elizabeth up for, then?
11:38It's been a while.
11:39Oh, it's not easy.
11:41I think this, Liz, might be a little easier.
11:43Oh, Lizzie's a bit easier.
11:45What are you saying?
11:47On the dating scene, she's very fussy.
11:51If they sit on a chair and their legs are not touching the ground, you find it very unattractive.
11:56One date.
11:57Okay, one date.
11:57But you said that.
11:58He was smaller than me.
12:00Yeah.
12:00I'm just imagining you with little wings and a bow and arrow.
12:04Yeah, I love doing that.
12:06It's crossed my mind, Liz.
12:07I have an older son who's still a bachelor.
12:11I think he's very handsome.
12:13I'm excited for you to meet him.
12:15Because he'll be bowled over.
12:16Oh, thank you.
12:18Going on a date with Barbara's son.
12:20Do you think he'll be as eccentric as Barbara?
12:22I think so.
12:23I reckon he's got money as well, so you're in there.
12:26Yeah.
12:27With love in the air, the group engage in desert island discourse.
12:33What three things could you not live without if you were dropped on a desert island?
12:37A book, bikini and a lighter.
12:41I'm going to say a car door.
12:44Okay.
12:45And the reason for that, if you got too hot, I'd want the window down.
12:51That's the only joke I know.
12:53How long have you been saving that one for?
12:55About 35 years.
12:55I knew this day was coming.
12:57I knew it.
12:58Helen and Carl, I reckon, are going to be really good hosts because they've been so much fun
13:03for us.
13:04So they're going to be even bigger and even brighter.
13:06So they're going to be great.
13:07Yeah.
13:08Next, the guests guess what's in store at Next Hosts Barbara and Elizabeth's.
13:13I'm going to guess Stately Home, big wedding venues.
13:17We're absolutely stumped, aren't we?
13:19Well, we've kind of gone from camping to Stately Home.
13:23I think your place is going to be very elegant.
13:26That's very much Barbara.
13:29Well, you definitely are.
13:31I would say it's like her home.
13:33It's very much an extension of Barbara.
13:36Whether that's good or whether that's bad.
13:39No, it's a good, it's really a good thing.
13:40I'm sure we'll wait and see.
13:41It's a very good thing.
13:43Oh, I can't wait.
13:44Barbara and Elizabeth, I think it's going to be like Basil Fawlty's Towers.
13:47I think it's going to be brilliant.
13:49Drink's done.
13:50It's off to bed.
13:51Good night, my love.
13:52Good night, night.
13:58It's a new day in Longstow.
14:00And the guests are rising and shining.
14:02Good morning.
14:03Did you sleep well, Barbara?
14:05I slept like a princess, Elizabeth.
14:07What a lovely job they've done.
14:09With the linens and the room in general, I've slept very well.
14:12And with the air con as well, I slept like a baby.
14:15Absolutely.
14:16But Helen and Carl are critiquing the communal courtyard.
14:20Couldn't go on that table and sit in the middle of all them windows.
14:24I like it private.
14:25Yeah.
14:27In the kitchen, Carl's team has breakfast underway.
14:30And he's ready to bring home the bacon.
14:33I've got every confidence in the team.
14:34The kitchen are great.
14:35And Liz isn't too bad either.
14:37I'll do my best.
14:39And as the final guests take their seats...
14:41Good morning, everyone.
14:42Good morning.
14:43Are you ready to order?
14:45Liz kicks things off.
14:46Can I have the traditional English, please?
14:48Traditional English?
14:49The granola yoghurt pot, please.
14:51Smoked salmon with the soft poached eggs.
14:54Orders in.
14:55I've got six orders there.
14:57All right.
14:58Bizarre breakfasts are bandied around.
15:00Our staff love our Yorkshire puddings with jam on it.
15:04They take them home and have them for breakfast the next day.
15:06Do they?
15:07Yeah.
15:07I've had an arm bread left over from the curry,
15:10and I've had jam on it the next morning instead of toast,
15:12and it was quite nice.
15:13Oh.
15:14We have a lovely Thai restaurant,
15:16and I can't imagine eating the Thai food in the morning.
15:22I couldn't stand the thought of eating any takeaway food for breakfast.
15:28What about half of the kebab?
15:31What's been left from the night before?
15:32No.
15:32No.
15:33Anybody else eat half the kebab in the morning?
15:36I have to confess, I don't think I've ever had the kebab.
15:39Honestly.
15:39We can order one in for you.
15:42Wow.
15:42An extra large.
15:46I can't believe she's never had a kebab.
15:48But then, yeah, I suppose I can believe.
15:50I think we need to buy her one as a present.
15:52A great big donut.
15:55Takeaways touted.
15:56Back in the kitchen...
15:59..the hot stuff is good to go.
16:00Oh, that looks lovely.
16:02Fiona, I've got your granola there for you.
16:04Wow.
16:05Traditional English with poached legs.
16:07Thank you very much.
16:09Oh, wow.
16:10Perfection.
16:14The food is lovely.
16:16These eggs, the yolks, are really orangey, rich.
16:20So tasty.
16:21It's nice and it's light.
16:23The berries are really fresh.
16:25There's some really good quality ingredients on the plate.
16:28Quite a thick bacon, which I prefer.
16:31Is that a homemade ash brown?
16:33Yeah, I think so.
16:34That's lovely, isn't it?
16:35Mm, nice.
16:36Nice smashed breakfast.
16:38Yeah, 100%.
16:40Stomach's stuffed.
16:41The guests digest the digs.
16:43How have you found your stay here?
16:45We've loved the stay here.
16:47It's a very charming coaching inn that's been restored beautifully, lovingly.
16:53I loved my room.
16:54I was...
16:54Honestly, I could have stayed for the week.
16:57The room, I thought, was absolutely lovely.
17:00Just the odd...
17:01..the odd little thing.
17:03What can we put right?
17:04There were quite distinct cleaning issues.
17:09Again, just a five-minute checkover before we went in
17:13would have just cured it, I think.
17:15Helen and Carl definitely have a different judging style.
17:19I've got extremely high standards.
17:21Yes.
17:22We didn't find any dust, but it might have just been a solo experience.
17:27Breakfast done.
17:28The guests head back to their rooms
17:29to complete their anonymous feedback forms.
17:32How were your hosts at the Red House?
17:34Lovely, attentive hosts.
17:36There's no other score we can give them but a ten.
17:38OK, it's a ten.
17:39So, how clean was the Red House?
17:42Bits and dust in the drawers.
17:44Sofa not vacuumed underneath.
17:46And dust behind the TV.
17:48A seven.
17:49I agree.
17:50I felt I was the first person that's been in this room.
17:54Ten.
17:55I think I agree with you.
17:56A ten.
17:57How were the facilities?
17:59Beautiful building, old versus modern.
18:02Quality flooring.
18:03However, lack of privacy in outdoor area.
18:07An eight.
18:07OK, I agree.
18:09Extra touches in bedroom, my fridge.
18:13And the air con.
18:14Great, yeah.
18:15The only thing we could possibly pull them up on
18:18would be that we'd have decaf coffee in the rooms.
18:20Yeah, it'll have to be a nine.
18:22OK, that seems fair.
18:24Door handle on the bathroom door.
18:26On the inside.
18:27On the inside.
18:28And ditch the fluffy cushions, please.
18:30What do you think it should be?
18:32A nine.
18:33Yeah.
18:34How did you sleep?
18:35I slept very well.
18:36Comfortable beds and bedding.
18:38So it's a ten.

18:48Score?
18:49A ten.
18:50So, for the big question, would you stay here again?
18:54Yes.
18:55I totally agree.
18:56We've practically booked our next visit, haven't we?
18:58Yes.
18:59Apart from the few little e-cups, it's a yes.
19:03And I agree.
19:06Now the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:09That's a fair amount, I think.
19:11The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:14But for now, Carl and Liz can find out if the guests gave the Red House the green light.
19:21Let's hope they've been kind.
19:22Yep.
19:23How were your hosts at the Red House?
19:25A ten.
19:25Brilliant.
19:26That is fantastic.
19:28Attentive hosts.
19:29We do try.

19:34That's good.
19:35Yep.
19:36Extra touches in the bedroom, i.e. fridge, air con.
19:39Great.
19:40That's a really lovely comment.
19:42No decaf coffee.
19:43Easily put that right, can't we?
19:45Yep.

20:02Right, on to the next one.
20:04Yeah.
20:04Here it goes.
20:04Let's see.
20:05How clean was the red house?
20:07A ten.
20:08Felt as if I was the first person in the room.
20:11Yes.
20:11Brilliant.
20:12That's exactly what we want.
20:14How were the facilities?
20:15Oh, a nine.
20:16A nine.
20:17What have we done?
20:18Yes, let's see.
20:19Door handle on inside to bathroom door.
20:22Now, hands up.
20:24You need to look at that.

20:26Ditch the fluffy cushions, please.
20:28I love them cushions.
20:29They're staying.
20:30How did you sleep?
20:32A ten.
20:32Ten.
20:33Wow.
20:33Yeah.
20:34Really good.
20:35Slept like a princess.
20:36Well, this sounds like Barbara, doesn't it?
20:38And she is a princess.
20:40We've really had a really special time.
20:42Oh, thanks for coming.
20:43Bye-bye.
20:44Moving on to the big question.
20:46Yep.
20:46Let's have a look.

20:48Brilliant.
20:49Another yes.
20:50Really pleased for that.

20:53Let's go.
20:54How clean was the red house?
20:56A seven.
20:56Oh, no.
20:58No.
20:59Bits and dust in drawers.
21:02Oh, I thought I'd gone through all the drawers.
21:04Sofa not vacuumed underneath.
21:06This has got to be Helen and Carl, because that's the room with the sofa.
21:09Yeah.
21:09So I'm guessing their place is going to be...
21:11Immaculate.
21:12We'll be on our hands and knees, won't we?
21:15And then dust behind the TV.
21:17I didn't dust behind the TV.
21:19We'll learn from this, won't we?
21:20Yep.
21:21How were the facilities?
21:22Oh, we've got an eight.
21:24What have we done wrong here?
21:25Beautiful building.
21:27Old versus modern.
21:28It is a lovely building.
21:30Yeah.
21:30Quality flooring.
21:31And I laid it myself.
21:32Praise indeed.
21:33Yeah.
21:35Lack of privacy in outdoor area.
21:37Well, I like the outside area, so I don't think we'll be changing it, will we?
21:41No.
21:41No.

21:53A little bit nervous.
21:54Let's have a look, then.
21:56Yes!
21:56Three out of three.
21:57Yeah, that is brilliant.
21:58Really good.
21:59I'm so happy with that.
22:00So, they're all coming back.
22:02Does that mean we've got a chance of winning this?
22:04I think we've got a good chance.
22:05Let's cross our fingers.
22:06And reach for the stars.
22:10Next time, when Barbara and Elizabeth host...
22:13Welcome to Holly Lodge.
22:15It's full steam ahead.
22:17Are you ready to get steamed up?
22:19Yeah.
22:21And the host fares all.
22:23Normally, I knock, knock, knock.
22:25I didn't knock.
22:26And there was a lady completely stark naked on the bed.
22:31Lightning.
22:32No.
22:58Yeah.
