00:00A single tweet put out by the U.S. State Department's Counterterrorism Bureau has been ruffling feathers in France.
00:06It references the killing of a 23-year-old French far-right activist.
00:11Thursday's post on Aix says the United States will continue to monitor the situation regarding Quentin Dérancq
00:17and expects to see the perpetrators brought to justice.
00:20It's the kind of language the French foreign minister says goes too far.
00:24We refuse any exploitation of this tragedy, which has left a French family in mourning for political ends.
00:34We have no lessons to learn from the reactionary international.
00:38As for analyzing political life, the place of violence, and violence more generally,
00:43we serve up those insights ourselves with quite enough verve, and we will not allow others to serve them to
00:49us.
00:53In response, Paris says it's summoning the U.S. ambassador.
00:57Charles Kushner was already summoned last year over a letter he sent to the French president, Emmanuel Macron,
01:03alleging the country wasn't doing enough to combat anti-Semitism.
01:06But French foreign ministry officials met a representative from the U.S. embassy instead
01:11when the ambassador didn't show up.
01:13It isn't just statements out of the United States that are angering France.
01:17Last week, President Macron hit out at Italy's prime minister for commenting on Dérancq's death
01:23after she described his killing as a wound for all of Europe.
01:27I'm always struck by the fact that people who are nationalists,
01:30who don't want anyone bothering them at home, are always the first to comment on what's happening elsewhere.
01:35If everyone just stayed in their own yard, the flock would look after itself.
01:40While Meloni denies interfering in France's internal affairs, French authorities remain on edge
01:46as tensions simmer between the far left and far right in the country in the run-up to the presidential
01:52vote.
01:53Next year.
