00:02Civil rights leader and former presidential candidate, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, has died.
00:08Jackson was 84. He had been hospitalized since November and had battled a rare neuromuscular disease for several years.
00:15A close ally of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jackson rose to national prominence during the Civil Rights Movement
00:21and went on to found the Rainbow Push Coalition, advocating for racial justice, economic equality, and voting rights.
00:29He ran for president twice in 1984 and 1988, becoming one of the first black candidates to mount a serious
00:37campaign for the White House
00:38and expanding the political coalition that reshaped the Democratic Party.
00:43Jackson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and spent decades negotiating hostage releases abroad,
00:49pressing corporations on diversity, and pushing for expanded political representation at home.
00:55In a statement, his family called him, quote,
00:58a servant leader, not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world.
01:05They added, his unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions.
