00:00Top Fred Lines here for Tuesday, which means Donnie Wrightson and Joe Renier are going to dip our toes into
00:04the waters of college basketball.
00:07And as Joe and I know, as of this past Sunday, it was four weeks until Selection Sunday, and away
00:12we go.
00:13The end of this month, like we're two weeks away, Joe, roughly from some of these smaller conferences getting their
00:18conference tournaments underway, which is a fantastic week.
00:21And we love day basketball. You get a lot of that. It's almost like that precursor to the tournament to
00:25get you ready.
00:26You get that final look at some of these teams and the high leverage situations.
00:29But, Joe, before we get there, we got a lot of great basketball over the next month, and it starts
00:33in the Big Ten tonight.
00:34Michigan going to take on Purdue. Purdue, the home team, getting two and a half points.
00:38And a total, Joe, which I saw open around 151 and a half, now being bet up to as high
00:43as 156 and a half in the marketplace.
00:46Michigan takes the number two most efficient offense on the road and the number one most efficient defense as well.
00:53What's Purdue got up their sleeve, Joe, because I'm taking a look right now.
00:55Not a lot of tickets on Purdue, but not a lot of movement here.
00:59What's that spread line tonight?
01:01Yeah, it feels like Goliath versus Goliath, doesn't it, Donnie?
01:04That's pretty much what we got.
01:06Mackie Arena will be the site for this.
01:09Purdue, 21-4, 11-3 now in the Big Ten.
01:15Listen, to me, we've already seen Purdue lose in this arena, right?
01:20And I think that was the Nebraska that ended up handling business there against Purdue.
01:25And now Michigan, who's been talking a lot of smack about this.
01:29And who better than Michigan to go on the road and not be interested in your home court advantage here?
01:34It feels like Michigan has been steady Eddie here, Donnie.
01:37And I think the market sees it that way as well.
01:40We know Mackie Arena, not an easy place to play.
01:43But we've also already seen this Purdue team not live up to the hype on a number of occasions in
01:49it.
01:49It feels like this is another smash spot for Michigan here tonight.
01:53Who didn't, wasn't interested about the Breslin Center and Tom Izzo in Michigan State, were they?
01:58I don't think they're going to be all that intimidated here by Mackie Arena and Purdue in this game.
02:03Well, Joe, we got an interesting one here in the ACC tonight.
02:05The public is sort of feeling one way and the odds makers are going.
02:09We're going another way.
02:10That's North Carolina on the road, on Tobacco Road to take on NC State.
02:14Get a load of this, Joe.
02:15Overnight, at least the FanDuel, opened up as a minus five and a half point favorite for the home team,
02:19NC State.
02:20Now we're seeing six and a half, which is normal.
02:22So those lines are going to move overnight.
02:23But I'm finding out, Joe, 20 or so percent of the tickets coming in on NC State.
02:27But yet that line moves slightly higher with a total of 158 and a half.
02:31The one thing we know about UNC, very good on offense, but really bad on defense, Joe.
02:35What's that spread line tonight for UNC versus NC State?
02:38Well, I mean, you're right, Donnie.
02:40It's been nothing but NC State money at home here.
02:43And this, listen, this is a, I don't want to, it's a must win for NC State, right?
02:48This is a game that they have to have.
02:50Will Wade has been screaming and yelling here.
02:53One of the best guys to watch after in his press conferences after games.
02:58The guy's an absolute lunatic.
03:01But they've got to win this game.
03:03And the market seems to think that they will have a good shot.
03:06Now, don't forget, North Carolina, they lost their heart and soul there with Caleb Wilson.
03:10They're hoping to get him back.
03:12But they won't have him for this game either.
03:14So a little shorthanded, North Carolina.
03:17Can they be trusted to go on the road into that building and win?
03:21I kind of tend to think if you're going to keep betting up NC State here, Donnie,
03:25I might have no choice but to take the points with North Carolina.
03:29Two teams in the Big Ten here, Joe.
03:31Not in great form over the past couple games here.
03:33That's Nebraska taking on Iowa.
03:35This game's going to be played at Iowa here.
03:37And overnight, we had roughly a pick-em here between where you were shopping.
03:40But now we find ourselves in the morning, Joe.
03:42Iowa has a minus one and a half point favorite across the board.
03:45Total here at 139 and a half.
03:47You take a look at Nebraska coming into this game.
03:49Decent offense, very good defense here.
03:51And then you take a look at Iowa.
03:52Just basically middle of the pack on offense and defense in the Big Ten.
03:55But yet Iowa, the favorite tonight at Carver Hawkeye.
03:59Yeah, I mean, styles make fights.
04:01And this is an interesting one here between Nebraska and Iowa.
04:04But if we're being honest here, I mean, where is the signature win for Iowa?
04:10Is this going to be it?
04:11Because we haven't seen it.
04:13We just watched them get lambasted by Purdue over the weekend here.
04:17I mean, it wasn't even close.
04:19That was supposed to be a game that, oh, boy, watch out, Purdue.
04:22Well, yeah, no.
04:23And now you've got a Nebraska team that got the losing done early, Donnie, right?
04:28They had a little rough stress there over the last couple of weeks.
04:31But they seem to have righted the ship.
04:33And it appears that they are finally fully healthy with Mast and everyone else.
04:38So I think that this is just a matchup nightmare for Iowa.
04:42I think Nebraska's got too much outside shooting.
04:45I think they can handle business on the road against Iowa, who's yet to beat anybody of
04:51anybody of notable, you know, in this conference here.
04:55Just don't see it happening with Iowa.
04:58Joe, let's head over to Miami and then another Miami team.
05:02But let's start with the undefeated Miami.
05:03That's Miami, Ohio.
05:04Take it on UMass.
05:05On the road, Joe, we previewed this yesterday.
05:07Three and a half point favorite here for Miami of Ohio.
05:10But look at this total at 162 and a half.
05:13And I look at this game and say to myself, I love UMass here in this game on defense because
05:17they stink, Joe, going up against an awesome Miami of Ohio offense here.
05:22Give me the team total over for Miami.
05:24Everything matches well.
05:25But Joe, what's your spread line for your boys staying undefeated tonight?
05:29This is the one worrisome game that was left here, Donnie, right?
05:34They've gone back to back wins last week.
05:37And they've won both games, Donnie, ironically enough, last week by the same score, 90 to 74.
05:43I don't know that that's happened.
05:44But now this is like if they can get past this UMass squad here who played them tough already,
05:51but they played them tough, obviously, at Miami of Ohio.
05:55Now they're going to go on the road to UMass.
05:58And you know, Donnie, they're undefeated and they would love to end this streak here.
06:02So this is a very tricky game.
06:05If Miami of Ohio does what they usually do, they'll win this one going away in the second half.
06:11I'm telling you, you look at the efficiency on offense, that's a bad defense here.
06:14They should be able to exploit them from the three-point line inside the arc.
06:17And oh, yeah, you know who fouls more than any other team in conference play?
06:20It's UMass here.
06:21And you know who gets to the free throw line?
06:22It's Miami, Ohio.
06:23Love that game.
06:24Should be a fun one to watch.
06:25Let's flip it down to South Beach.
06:26A little bit warmer temperatures here.
06:28Virginia Tech's going to take on Miami.
06:29Miami overnight, Joe.
06:31Six and a half point favorite.
06:32Now today on a Tuesday, eight and a half point favorite with a total of 150 and a half.
06:36The U at home playing good basketball under Jai Lucas.
06:38What's your spread here?
06:39Yeah, Virginia Tech's tournament hopes took a dash there with that loss this past weekend here,
06:45which makes this a double-way must-win situation.
06:50Virginia Tech has to win this game in order to keep the tournament hopes alive.
06:55Miami can lock in a bid and guarantee themselves a tournament spot with a win here.
07:01This is a huge game tonight, one in which a lot of people in the market,
07:05you can think Miami runs away with.
07:08Yeah, and by the way, also, you look at the team of Virginia Tech's defense,
07:10number one in conference play, giving up points inside the arc.
07:13You know who's number one inside the arc at scoring?
07:15It's Miami.
07:15They don't care about the three-point shot.
07:17What an amazing revelation in college basketball.
07:20AP Top 25, as we saw it yesterday here.
07:24Michigan, the number one team in the country, going to play tonight with a tough game.
07:27You take a look at Houston, the number two team overall,
07:29which actually lost their game on Monday night to Iowa State,
07:33so they'll be dropping probably in the next polls here.
07:35And we'll see who's moving up, like Iowa State listed at six here.
07:38Duke coming in at three.
07:39Arizona coming in at number four.
07:40And there's UConn at number five.
07:43Yeah, and Michigan easily the number one team.
07:47Almost unanimous, I believe, there, Donnie.
07:49And they should be.
07:50I mean, they've been nothing short of totally consistent here.
07:54I mean, Arizona having lost back-to-back games and now being injured is not great.
08:01And Houston losing last night just solidifies what everyone else knew.
08:06There's a clear number one in the country right now, and it is Michigan.
08:10How about the clear number one in the country here for the women's side?
08:13Once again, it's UConn.
08:14By the way, top two, top ten teams, two top five teams roughly there for UConn.
08:18Once again, the basketball capital of the world in Storrs, Connecticut.
08:22Juno Ariema has led the Huskies to 654 appearances in the poll
08:27during his 41-year Hall of Fame career to match Tara Vanderveer for most all-time,
08:31who retired from Stanford in 2024.
08:35Juno just keeps cooking out there.
08:36He just does.
08:38Yeah, I mean, listen, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
08:41And whatever he's been doing there for as long as he's been doing it there,
08:45Juno, it's working.
08:48So, I mean, kudos to him.
08:50Kudos to the UConn women always at the top of their game.
08:54You know, it's going to be interesting here.
08:57But there are some teams and some programs, Donnie,
09:00that have closed the gap on the women's side.
09:02So, it's going to be a very interesting tournament there as well.
09:07How about this?
09:07You want to talk about making some money here?
09:09Look at this graphic.
09:11Country's total GDPs.
09:13Fiji, $6.3 billion per year.
09:16How about this?
09:17Calipari's NBA player earnings, 5.8.
09:20More than Estuani, Liberia, South Sudan, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
09:24You want to make money?
09:25You play for Cal.
09:27That's exactly what you do, period.
09:30And listen, it's been like that for how long, Donnie?
09:33Let's be honest.
09:34It's been like that since you go back to his UMass day.
09:38And, like, even when it wasn't legal to play the players,
09:41they were still making more money than anybody else, Donnie.
09:44So, Cal has gamed the system.
09:47He, heck, he might have even invented the system here at this particular point.
09:52Nobody does it better than he does.
09:54No, he certainly does.
09:55Like, he could sit in your living room, like, I can make your son money right here.
09:58Like, you know what?
09:59He can.
09:59He should go there regardless of where he is, whether he's, you know,
10:02Kentucky, if he's at UMass, if he's at Arkansas, doesn't matter.
10:05You're going to be a first-round draft pick.
10:07You're going to make some money, and you are going to cash in.
10:09I always loved Danny Hurley.
10:10It was interesting where he was thinking about going to the NBA
10:12or maybe sliding to a new institution, and somebody would pay him more.
10:16Would he be Kentucky's next hit coach?
10:17He stays at UConn here, and he's starting to get upset.
10:20And this reminds me a little bit of Nick Saban.
10:21When you win for so long and the expectations at your university,
10:24are you going to win these regular season games?
10:26You just want to watch tournament basketball.
10:28And also, you have the women on campus who are fantastic every single year
10:31and the men who also win national championships.
10:34He wants to know why those arenas, particularly on campus here in stores,
10:38aren't getting filled up.
10:39He's upset with it, Joe.
10:41And he should be, right?
10:43I mean, isn't the whole point to put on a, you know,
10:46put a product on the court here that fans and the university can be proud of,
10:51and this way they support him.
10:52And, yeah, he's a little bent there.
10:55But he doesn't have that problem when he goes to stores south, right,
10:58when he goes to Madison Square Garden.
11:00But he's got a problem at stores right now where a lot of folks are just like,
11:04yeah, I guess you get so used to winning that it's like, eh,
11:07we'll just wait until the Big East tournament comes around.
11:10Yeah, it's pretty incredible as you take a look at that, too.
11:12Because, again, the expectations are UConn championship or bust.
11:15But you figure with good basketball teams, you know,
11:17the student section is going to be fired up.
11:19They're going to be there every night.
11:19But also, Joe, could the tradeoff be, well, wait a second.
11:22We can't be there every night.
11:24Like, hey, UConn men are on the road.
11:26Great.
11:26Well, the women are home.
11:27Okay.
11:27The women are on the road.
11:28Never met her home.
11:28So the students got to be like, what do we got to do?
11:30Go to 60 games a year over the next month and a half at this point?
11:32Maybe they can't do that, Joe.
11:34Well, I mean, listen, how many – a lot of those games that they play,
11:39they play away from stores anyway.
11:41It's at Madison Square Garden.
11:42So the games – you would think that when he gets home, you know,
11:46to his point, he's like, have we not built up enough equity here?
11:50I mean, and the student section, too, is like, that's the big issue here.
11:55You know the diehards are going, but the student section is, like, lame.
12:00Like, what is going on here?
12:02Yeah, a lot of the big games also, Joe.
12:03I think it's still called the XL Center in Hartford,
12:05where they sort of have that as their, like, you know,
12:07hey, if we want to get out of Gampel, which, I don't know,
12:09maybe 10,000 seats, we'll go to a 15,000-seat arena.
12:11That's where they head to some of those big games.
12:12So fan base split a little bit there.
12:14But, again, sometimes it's not so good.
12:16We always talk about the Miami Hurricanes, like, back in the 80s and 1990s.
12:20Miami versus Florida State, sold out, can't get in the building,
12:23absolutely shaking.
12:24Miami versus Temple, 25,000, 30,000 people in a 65,000, 70,000-seat stadium
12:29at this point.
12:30They say, you know what, expectations are a victory.
12:32We'll show up for the big games here, and maybe UConn's getting that.
12:35How about the big games tonight, Joe, in college basketball?
12:37We talked about it to open the show on Spreadlines.
12:396.30 tonight, Michigan versus Purdue.
12:43Michigan, the road favorite, coming into this bad boy
12:45as the number one team in the country.
12:48And, listen, number one offensive-efficient team in the country.
12:52Number four defensive-efficient team in the country.
12:56And right behind them, offensively, is, there you go, Purdue, right?
13:01They've got the second-best offense.
13:03But here's where the difference comes in, Donnie.
13:06Yeah, they are only 19th at best when it comes to defense.
13:11Purdue, not a great defensive team.
13:14Michigan, a great defensive, elite defensive team.
13:17So, if Purdue doesn't outshoot Michigan,
13:21it's going to be a tough one for them at Mackey Arena again tonight.
13:25How about UCLA versus Michigan State?
13:27You know, it's unfair.
13:28We've got to travel.
13:29They traveled to Michigan on Sunday
13:31and got absolutely blasted in the second half of that basketball game.
13:36Now, I'm going to assume they didn't take a charter flight back to L.A.
13:40for a day and then take another charter back to Michigan State.
13:44They're probably staying in Michigan.
13:45It's cold.
13:46And they're an eight-and-a-half-point underdog with a total of 139-and-a-half.
13:50Mick Cronin is going to be crying tonight after the game how unfair this is to his team in California.
13:55Well, listen, games that UCLA and Mick Cronin don't play at home, three and seven, not great.
14:03And even though they have a positive differential from three-point range,
14:07they're allowing almost 60% on two-point shots here on the road.
14:12If you clamp down defensively UCLA on the road, you might actually win a few more games.
14:18Go figure.
14:19Makes some sense here.
14:20How about this quickly, Joe?
14:21Miami, Ohio versus UMass.
14:22Undefeated team, the last in the country.
14:24A minus three-and-a-half-point spread as I'm just trying to take a look at Miami's total points.
14:3083-and-a-half, Joe, is their team total.
14:32They were a 10-point favorite at home.
14:35One didn't cover.
14:36They're only a four-point favorite on the road.
14:43College basketball is the name of the game, Joe.
14:46Big games across the board.
14:47Where do we go tonight?
14:48Yeah, I'm going to go to Mackey Arena here, Donnie, with the game of the night.
14:53Number one, Michigan on the road, taking on the Boilermakers.
14:59And yeah, I'm sorry.
15:01Michigan is a deserved road favorite here for a reason.
15:06And I just do not trust this Purdue team against the physicality that they're about to see, Donnie, with Michigan.
15:14Listen, Michigan, number one offensive-efficient team.
15:18They are number four defensively.
15:21This is where the difference is, right?
15:23Purdue is, they're a good defense, but they are not what Michigan is going to bring to the table.
15:29They rely too much on jump shots.
15:31And I think they're going to have an issue here tonight.
15:34So, yeah, I like Michigan to go into Mackey Arena and continue with their number one seed and continue to
15:42be the best team in the country and prove it again tonight.
15:46Michigan on the road.
15:47And away we go, Joe.
15:48I'm going to go to a little bit of smaller college basketball.
15:50Gardner-Webb, one of the worst teams in the country, if not the worst, taking on Charleston Southern.
15:54The three-win Gardner-Webb squad.
15:57There's nine teams in conference play with Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern.
16:01If you look at Gardner-Webb's offense, it's ninth overall, Joe.
16:05Here's the intriguing part about this.
16:06The defense for Charleston Southern is number one in effective field goal percentage here and number one at defending inside
16:13the arc.
16:13You know the worst three-point shooting team in that conference is?
16:16It is Gardner-Webb.
16:17You know who gets to the line eighth out of nine teams?
16:20It is Gardner-Webb.
16:21I don't see how they score and also understand this, number one in blocks per possession is Charleston Southern.
16:26If you can't shoot the three and you get chased off the three-point line and you're going to have
16:30a tough time because guys are blocking shots down low, you're not scoring here.
16:34You do expect Charleston Southern to run away with this game.
16:36But Gardner-Webb getting the 71 points ain't happening, Joe.
16:40Team total under 70 and a half points tonight.
16:44I love it, Donnie.
16:45If it ain't broke, don't fix it, man.
16:47And points are going to be hard for Gardner-Webb, who is not very good, to say the least.
16:53And by the way, close little one here.
16:55I really do like it.
16:56I'm telling you, Miami of Ohio matches up real well tonight against UMass.
17:00Something to keep an eye on.
17:01Will they be undefeated tomorrow morning?
17:03Well, the best part about it is Joe and Donnie will be here quite and early to tell you if
17:06they did that tomorrow.
17:08See you then.
