00:02Police emergency, what location do you need the police?
00:04Hello, my name's Austin.
00:07A calm call for help from a brave 13-year-old acting well beyond his age.
00:12We went out on a kayak trip and a paddleboard trip and we got to the sea and we got
00:24lost out there.
00:25This is Austin Appleby's call to police after his mum was forced to make a difficult decision.
00:31We couldn't get back to shore and mum told me they'd go back to get help.
00:35And then I haven't seen them since.
00:38I think they're kilometres out in sea.
00:41I think we need a helicopter to go find them.
00:44Austin had swum for four hours and then ran a further two kilometres to get help.
00:49I'm sitting on the beach right now and I have to also explain,
00:53I think I need an ambulance because I think I have hypothermia.
00:57The operator organises a massive search effort deploying local sea rescue and aircraft.
01:03Did mum say that she was going to meet you back at shore or you just swam back in because
01:06of your kayak?
01:07Mum said go get help because we were in massive trouble.
01:13He collapsed shortly after making the call but his family was rescued after spending about 10 hours at sea.
01:20Police in awe of Austin's superhuman efforts.
01:23It's just struck us all at Western Australia Police how articulate, calm and collected he was,
01:28providing precise details of the colour, the times and all the information that we needed locally
01:34to coordinate the rescue efforts in order to successfully find his family.
