00:00Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovi, just sued Hims & Hers for what it calls an unsafe knockoff version of its blockbuster GLP-1 drugs.
00:09This all kicked off when telehealth company Hims & Hers launched a cheap, compounded Wegovi-style pill, and Novo immediately threatened legal action.
00:18Hims & Hers pulled the pill within days, but Novo sued anyway, saying the products aren't FDA-approved and could contain dangerous impurities.
00:26Hims & Hers then fired back, calling it a blatant attack on consumer choice, but their stock still plunged 16%.
00:33At the center of the conflict is Compounding, a legal loophole that lets pharmacies make custom versions of drugs when the official ones aren't available.
00:41Now, the FDA has been warning for months that some compounded GLP-1s are being mass-marketed in ways that blur the line with approved drugs,
00:49and even referred Hims & Hers to the DOJ for possible violations.
00:52Novo, meanwhile, is under pressure from expiring patents and regulatory scrutiny of its own ads,
00:58so analysts say this lawsuit is the first big move to protect its turf.
01:01Supporters of Novo Nordisk argue that strict oversight is necessary to prevent unsafe or inconsistent versions of powerful drugs from flooding the market.
01:10Critics, however, counter that Big Pharma is using patents and lawsuits to keep prices high and limit access to treatments people desperately want.
01:17In other words, demand is skyrocketing, the rules are murky, billions are at stake, and this clash is just the opening scene for a much, much bigger story.
01:25So where do you land in this debate? Protecting safety or protecting access?
