A defiant Sir Keir Starmer has insisted he will “never walk away” after coming under pressure to quit as Prime Minister. In his first public comments since Labour’s Scottish leader Anas Sarwar called for him to quit, Sir Keir hit out at infighting within the party.Speaking at an event in Hertfordshire, the Prime Minister said the political “turmoil” would not stop him focusing on tackling cost-of-living pressures and improving opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

00:00Thank you very much and thanks for giving up your time this afternoon so I can have a chat with you.
00:07It's been a busy week and therefore it's very nice to be here.
00:15There were some people in recent days who say the Labour government should have a different fight,
00:21a fight with itself instead of a fight for the millions of people who need us to fight for them.
00:26And I say to them, I will never walk away from the mandate I was given to change this country.
00:35I will never walk away from the people that I'm charged with fighting for.
00:41And I will never walk away from the country that I love.
00:44That's why the distraction needs to end and the leadership in Downshape has to change.
00:59It is so obvious that we desperately need to change in Scotland.
01:03I've got a huge respect for Anasawa.
01:06Obviously he made his views known yesterday.
01:09But I want to be really clear that I'm 100% supportive of Anasawa to be the first Minitur in Scotland.
01:16Or all the above.
01:18We would turn it around and say that we would love to see more health of the philanthropists.
01:23So, you know, taxing people all the time doesn't have to do it.
01:27Thank you, everybody.
