00:00First of all congratulations with what we have seen. I really loved it. It's so cartoon, it's so cute. Also it's really great.
00:06Thank you.
00:07I would like to ask you because we have seen the birds from this short from Pixar. We also have this Avatar reference.
00:14What other references or cameos can we expect from Hoppers from this movie?
00:18Cameos? You mean like easter eggs?
00:20Yeah easter eggs, cameo references for other movies.
00:23Well it's funny because you know having making this being my first movie directing at Pixar I also did not know how like these easter eggs or hidden things get put into the movies.
00:35And some of them are on purpose like for example we have the one with For the Birds which you know we all talked about wanting to put in there to kind of honor Ralph Eccleston who passed away during the production of this movie.
00:47But some of them people on the crew just sneak in and some of them some people just have to tell me what they put into the movie I didn't even know until the movie was done.
00:55So I think a lot of it is just people who just love making the movie and surprising the audiences they kind of put in little fun things so yeah.
01:05That's great. Beautiful.
01:07You're playing the biggest league here because this is Pixar it's the biggest studio in the world.
01:12It's not your first job at Pixar but this is your first movie directing there. How is it a day at Pixar?
01:19How is it?
01:20A day.
01:21What is a day like at Pixar?
01:22Yeah.
01:23Well when I'm in the middle of like production which is probably like the last two years of making this movie there was not an inch of free time.
01:31Even like my lunches I did work during those lunches like we do work lunches like we do story meetings be like write do writing meetings during lunch.
01:43So it was pretty intensive and but there's something also kind of that was super fun and kind of exciting about just the energy that people brought to making a movie that bringing it to life.
02:00I think when the crew started to really connect with each other and we all kind of knew what we were making I think that's when everyone really was rallying behind this movie and kind of got things done that probably shouldn't have got done because they were probably too complicated.
02:14So I really feel grateful for the crew. They really pulled together an amazing movie.
02:17That sounds amazing.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Now, you were telling us before about your research for this movie. You met the Disney Imagineers. You surely have learned a lot about robots about new technologies. There was something particularly I don't know impactful or surprising for you in this matter.
02:35I think you learn to appreciate how complex robotics are. And I think some of the things that we were starting to see them play around with and this was like years ago and now this stuff already exists out in Disneyland, but, you know, they were showing us very early on animatronics that, you know, had no wires attached to them, you know, they were free walking and you know, now we see the little Olaf walking around and stuff in Disneyland, but they were showing us early kind of stuff on the
03:05and things in that kind of, in that vein. And it just makes you appreciate like how complex it is and how hard it is for them to do these things, you know, and maybe you take it for, we all take it for granted because you watch a movie and you're like, Oh, it just exists.
03:20But in real life to get it to move on its own without wires is like magic. And it is magic. When you start to see it out there, you see it and you're enchanted by it. It is really fantastic.
03:32So, yeah, I think it, it's just a general appreciation for the complexity and kind of what they do. Yeah.
03:39Yeah, that's great. I would like to add to you because there's no secret that Pixar has had some, a bit rough years with movies that didn't work so well as expected, movies released directly on streaming.
03:53Yeah.
03:54How is the studio nowadays? Because I think it's in a recovery process with original movies, also sequels. How is the studio nowadays?
04:01I think it's more, less a reflection on Pixar, but more on the industry, in my opinion, you know, I think it's, it's, we're not, Pixar is not alone in the struggle, you know, so I don't think it's necessarily a Pixar thing.
04:16But I do think one thing, you know, just to acknowledge is yeah, Pixar did have a very historic run of movies that were successful. And that's undeniable, but it's just kind of an impossible thing to happen, you know, and I think we should just acknowledge that that is an anomaly that we can kind of honor and just be appreciative of.
04:38But I think the reality is that when you're a studio that is trying to make original things and is trying to put, is trying to take risks on different kinds of stories with different kinds of filmmakers, some will hit, some won't. And I think that's a little bit more normal.
04:53So I think that that is the truth of it. But to answer your question, I think the tone is just everyone's trying to figure out how the industry is moving right now. And I think Pixar is no different. So it's a challenge. But, you know, we're hoping that we'll figure, you know, every that the movies will kind of find their way in this kind of new era of movie. Yeah.
05:15Yeah, tricky times. I have time for one last question. So I would like to ask you, you probably know, well, you surely know about this Pixar theory where all the Pixar movies are related in this complex timeline. Where does Hopper fit in this place?
05:30Well, I will say that there is an Easter egg that I will not spoil for you at the end of the movie that has about six references, about six Pixar movies in one shot. In my guess, I don't know much about like what the theory is and where things stand. But whatever that theory is, I have a feeling it's going to blow it up.
