00:00The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the greatest heroes in American history.
00:05He most certainly deserves having his name as a federal holiday. Here are the receipts.
00:11The social activist led the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950s and 60s.
00:17His leadership was fundamental to ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the
00:22South and other parts of the US. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was remembered for his masterful
00:27oratorical skills most notable in his I Have a Dream speech during the March on Washington.
00:32I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.
00:44The speech called for equity and freedom and the march had a strong effect on the national opinion
00:50resulting in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Dr. King pronounced racism,
00:56poverty and war as threats to humanity and he led a movement to generate protest,
01:01structural change and non-violence. This is a legacy to claim.
