00:00I talked to each of you guys once you came aboard about the training, about that I wanted you guys to do your own stunts, do your own fighting.
00:09It was imperative because for me the best action is personal and it's character driven and it's story driven and it's very hard to do that when you're dealing with doubles.
00:20Y'all looked me in the eye and said that you would do everything it took, even those who hadn't done it before.
00:26It's one thing to say that, it's another thing to really do what you guys did, which was, I don't think anyone can ever really say how hard you guys, or maybe you guys can.
00:41But I do want to start with Tussauds, because you sent me an email, like after the, she said I could share some of this, I'm not being an asshole.
00:56After, um, like your second day of training, um, and I'll just read the part.
01:02Your second day of training?
01:04Well running, it was running.
01:05Was it running?
01:05No, it wasn't.
01:06Regular stunts?
01:07Okay.
01:09No, it was, it was, uh, it was with Gabby.
01:12Yeah.
01:13Oh my God.
01:13Gabby.
01:14Yeah.
01:17I love Gabby.
01:18I love you Gabby.
01:20I love you Gabby.
01:21I love you Gabby.
01:21I love you Gabby.
01:22I love you Gabby.
01:23I love you Gabby.
01:24I had to break down, yeah.
01:26So you, yes, you wrote to me, you said, it was painfully amazing, never in my life have
01:30I ever had a positive self-taught myself through anything, lol, because I guess I've just opted
01:36to play it safe.
01:37The mental conversation is definitely a huge part of this process that I'm welcoming wholeheartedly.
01:42I remember in my second session with Gabby, she asked me to lift my chin and chest, and
01:46I found myself getting emotional.
01:49Wow.
01:49Wow.
01:50That's profound.
01:51That's profound.
01:52That is profound.
01:53That's profound.
01:54Damn.
01:59So talk a little bit about that, and then I want y'all to just talk about the training
02:04and, yeah, what it took to dig deep and find it and why it was emotional to dig that deep.
02:10I think, yeah, again, it's something that I've never had to do, and in terms of just like
02:16physically being able to curve in was a means of protecting myself, it's still hard.
02:20Like, you had to push me constantly with Na'wi to be able to, you know, approach the world
02:24in that way.
02:25I remember that day.
02:29It was hard, but like it says, amazingly hard, because I had to kind of face parts of me
02:38that, one, I wasn't aware were wounded, but it was hard to run away from during that training,
02:46and it's in the, yeah.
02:48You train.
02:50Yes.
02:51You've been trained with Gabby, but you've never done anything on this level.
02:53Can you just talk a little bit about jumping in and the trust that it took that we were
03:00going to make you look good?
03:03Yes, Gina, I can talk about it.
03:08I call myself the OG warrior because I'm close to 60, right?
03:12OG.
03:13OG.
03:18You know what?
03:20I will say this, that there is something to be said about diving into something that
03:26you automatically assume you can't do.
03:30That there's something that you have to tap into, and when you bust out of it, it's almost
03:38like you become a new person.
03:42You do.
03:42It's like you're born again into this different sort of spirit.
03:48It's a warrior spirit.
03:50It's a spirit of, there is nothing I can't do.
03:56Now, I'm still trying to get there.
03:58Now, I'm not going to lie.
03:59I'm still trying to get there.
04:00Four hours a day, five days a week of training.
04:04But it was extraordinary.
04:14It's extraordinary, you know, because I know for myself, when just growing up in Central
04:21Falls, Rhode Island, little chocolate girl, I think that I had more people who told me
04:27what I could not do than what I could do.
04:29And so I grew up with restrictions, not thinking I'm pretty, not thinking I could be girly,
04:38not thinking I could be funny or feminine or whatever.
04:40It's all the things they tell you you can't do.
04:42And then you start your career and they say, you can't do this.
04:45You can't, you know, you're not, you're miscast with this, you're miscast with that, miscast
04:48with that.
04:48So this was like a great metaphor, a great exercise in killing all of that.
04:54That, for me, was the enemy.
04:58The people who said, you can't.
05:02That's actually what it felt like.
05:03I actually feel stronger now, internally, interestingly enough.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Can I say something about Viola?
05:11Please.
05:12I remember there were moments when we were in the gym and we would all just be like,
05:18I can't lift another weight.
05:20I can't do nothing.
05:21And then Viola would come in with a little dance every time.
05:24Like, come on, y'all, let's go.
05:27And I remember thinking, golly.
05:30All right.
05:31If she's going to keep pushing, then who am I to stop now?
05:36And you were just so inspiring in that way because you are the OG warrior.
05:42And it made all of us, like, step up and work harder and train harder to, like, get to your
05:48level, to keep up with you.
05:50So, yes, she really, really did.
05:56And Sheila, your first training session with Gabby, I heard, ended in some projecting.
06:02It was mad.
06:03It was mad.
06:04Ended?
06:04Began.
06:05Began with a vomit.
06:06What do you mean?
06:07Listen, I've got off a plane, like, less than 24 hours before.
06:11That's my excuse.
06:12I was dehydrated.
06:14And there was this, like, amazingly beautiful, petite Czech woman kind of smiling at me like,
06:22hey, do some, do some, do some, do some, do some weights.
06:25I was like, yeah, cool.
06:26And then 15 minutes in, I was like, what is this hell?
06:29Like, what's happening?
06:31What is happening?
06:32Actually, yeah.
06:33Do you know what I mean?
06:34And I was alone.
06:36And you guys are, like, training downstairs.
06:40And I was like, no, no, no, no.
06:41This needs to, I was talking to my body, like, you need to get used to this real quick.
06:45Because this is you now for six months, you know.
06:49And I think the belief that people like Gabby, people like yourself, you know, the people like
06:58Danny Hernandez and the stunt training team had in us to be able to, like, execute things.
07:03And we'd be there like, no.
07:06That's not for me.
07:07Every day.
07:08I was like, who's that for?
07:10That's not for me.
07:11Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:13And I also have to speak to the, just the power of, particularly the women here.
07:20I think every single person here at some point was quite badly injured during this, during
07:26this shoot.
07:26I'm sorry.
07:27There's a difference between hurt and injured.
07:29No, no, no, no, no.
07:30Hurt.
07:30Okay.
07:31Okay, athlete.
07:32Everybody, I have to say, everybody at this table at some point during this shoot was quite
07:37badly hurt, right?
07:39Which is just part and parcel of the thing.
07:40Like, even if you're doing everything right, when you're working at high intensity, it
07:43happens with athletes as well.
07:45You know, you just get hurt.
07:47But I'd seen every single one of you be hurt, hobbling, like, you know, when the camera's
07:55cut.
07:56And then when it's action, you just can't see it.
07:58Yeah.
07:59Every single one of you just transformed.
08:01And I remember watching that sometimes and being like, oh, this thing that I've got here
08:05or I've got there, like, I've got to find a way through it, you know, and safely.
08:10And that's a big, that's, you know, saying thank you to, you know, Heinrich and the, you know,
08:15physio team as well who kept us standing, you know?
08:18But, like, to be able to do that, you have to dig deep into layers, like you guys have
08:25all said, that you didn't know were there.
08:26You know, you have to, you have to find something.
08:29And sometimes you find it from the ground.
08:31Sometimes you find it from up.
08:32Sometimes we find it from each other.
08:35Man.
08:36You guys are amazing, man.
08:38You're amazing.
08:38Sorry, you.
08:39Hey, Cheryl.
08:42Angie, sorry, you're on this side.
08:45Lashoni, you had trained for 007.
08:48But what was different about this?
08:52Look, you asked to do your own stunts as, like, a kind of, you can let me do my own stunts.
08:56And then they don't let you do it fully because, you know, there's so many dangerous aspects
09:01to the shoot that it's impossible.
09:03So then when someone says you can do your own stunts, you're like, no, I'm not because
09:08it's dangerous.
09:09I don't know how to fully do this stuff.
09:11I don't know how to access the things that I don't know is there.
09:15I don't know.
09:16But I'm very competitive.
09:17Very.
09:20Okay.
09:21That's good.
09:21No, I'm very competitive.
09:23I know I can do something.
09:25So if I've never done it before, give me 24 hours.
09:29I'm mastering it.
09:29Even if I don't master it, I'll just, I'll master it.
09:32Yeah.
09:33Somehow.
09:34I'll try and just finesse it.
09:35And I was so excited to be able to get into my body in a way that I hadn't before, because
09:42that's how I access character anyway.
09:44And it's how I was able to really appreciate these women that we're representing, like
09:50fully, in order for me to feel like I'm honoring them correctly.
09:55I don't want there to be a vibe about me or on the set, or even when people watch the
10:01movie, as though we're like, just emulating a part of them.
10:04I wanted me personally to be able to embody these women so that they're proud of us.
10:11You know, that was my thing, the entire shoot.
10:14So the stunts was access to that.
10:18And it was access to appreciating everyone's work on set.
10:22When, like you said, Viola is there giving that one more take.
10:26And it's as though it's the first take.
10:28And I'm like, I feel like I'm going to break, but she's not breaking, so I'm not going to
10:32break, you know?
10:34And you're a bit like, like, really trying to hold it together.
10:38But you can see that we're feeding off of each other.
10:41So if one link decides to do this own thing, then it's pointless.
10:46But I loved it.
10:48Gabby.
10:49Oh, Gabby.
10:49Gabby McLean.
10:51I just saw her this morning.
10:52How?
10:53And you're standing?
10:54And you're here?
10:55Yeah.
10:55See?
10:56She brutalized me.
10:57Months after we've wrapped.
11:00So, yeah, I thought it was absolutely incredible.
11:03I'm genuinely, and I don't say this out loud enough, but I am so proud of being able to
11:08step up to what you asked of me.
11:10Yeah.
11:11Because we could have been like, are you out of your mind?
11:16No, no, that can't happen.
11:18This is why we have stunt doubles.
11:19I appreciate stunt doubles.
11:21But for this, I appreciate them in a different way because they were able to guide us and
11:25the Ness things and Danny Hernandez and the team were so incredible that I felt like
11:29in real safe hands.
11:31And I felt like my body was somehow always capable.
11:34I felt like every time we learned something new, we were just capable.
11:38And that's why I say our strength came from somewhere else.
11:41Because how?
11:44How?
11:45When people see this movie, I think they'll probably doubt that we did it.
11:48People, when me?
11:49When I'm doing it?
11:51People are like, who's that?
11:53That's not me, bro.
11:54Don't ask me to do that now.
11:56It's not possible.
11:57This is the thing.
11:58After every day, I was like, oh, no, I'm not doing that again.
12:01Yeah.
12:01Oh, no, I'm done.
12:02I can't physically do it.
12:04Literally.
12:04I was going to say everyone's hate.
12:06And then you find yourself just in the air.
12:08Like, will I go?
12:08Yeah, I'll never do it again.
12:10Can we just do it again?
12:11Yeah.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Yeah.
