00:00Hi, and welcome back to
00:05Hot Hair Series.
00:07I'm Corinne Corbett,
00:08Essence Beauty Director,
00:09and we're here behind the
00:11scenes at the Holiday Hair
00:12Shoot.
00:13I'm here with Silas Extraordinaire,
00:15Idris Nichols, owner of Idris Salon,
00:17and we're gonna talk a little
00:19bit more about some great
00:20hairstyles she's created
00:21for our issue.
00:22Let's talk about the retro side roll.
00:25I love rolls.
00:26I think they're always amazing
00:28in the sense that you can make
00:29them as tight as you want to,
00:30as loose as you want to,
00:31but it all depends on how you
00:32finish the front.
00:33You can either look like a
00:3416 year old, or you can look
00:36modern and beautiful.
00:37So the idea for me is like
00:38keep the front soft.
00:39Right.
00:40Try to keep the front like a
00:41wave to it, and then you can
00:42add an accessory so we can pull
00:44the lines up a bit more.
00:45Okay.
00:46Okay.
00:47And so, do you need to put
00:49anything in the hair to create
00:51a roll?
00:52You know, a lot of women do that
00:53and create a different kind of
00:54look than that you've created
00:55there, but the key to your look
00:57is what?
00:58My idea is to just play.
01:00And in doing so, using braids
01:01or the rolls, you can play and
01:03create whatever you want.
01:05You can have a roll from the
01:06back, which is also gorgeous.
01:07Right.
01:08You can put all your hair back
01:09and then just roll the areas
01:10in the back.
01:11You can do the rolls from the
01:12side.
01:13You can actually move that roll
01:14around your head and create
01:15something totally different
01:16each day.
01:17And what I like about the idea
01:18of a roll is it's something
01:19that we haven't seen in a very
01:20long time or done.
01:21At least I'm saying I haven't
01:22done it in a long time and I
01:23can't wait to try it.
01:25Let's talk about another look,
01:28your top knot.
01:29Oh yes.
01:30Well messy hair is the kind of
01:32thing that most people think
01:34it's a, oh you just do it.
01:35You see the magazine, they go,
01:36okay I can just do that.
01:38But it takes, it's a lot of
01:40preparation.
01:41You have to tease.
01:42Teasing is the key.
01:43You have to tease and you have
01:45deconstructed hair so much
01:46that you take a long head of
01:47hair and make it into a
01:48small ball.
01:49Okay.
01:50And then from there you
01:51take your fingers and you
01:52just kind of twist the hair
01:53direction you want.
01:54So you can create any
01:55direction that you want with
01:56that.
01:57You actually can use that on
01:58the side.
01:59Right.
02:00At the top you can bring it
02:01forward, you can also bring
02:02it to the back which is also
02:03beautiful.
02:04Right.
02:05Now in the key, so if you
02:06don't have enough hair,
02:07enough hair for a long head
02:08of hair to create some of
02:09these looks, what do we need
02:10to be looking for when we go
02:12to purchase hair?
02:13Well I always say every girl
02:14should have a friend.
02:15Even I do and I have short
02:16hair.
02:17Right.
02:18We all need to have extra
02:19hair.
02:20Yes.
02:21You don't have to have the
02:22same hair texture as yours.
02:23I'd rather you buy the hair
02:24that's more like tight curled
02:26because you don't have to
02:27work as hard.
02:28Okay.
02:29Because you can comb that
02:30curl out and it's already
02:31frizzy.
02:32Then you can just twist the
02:33hair and put it down.
02:34That's a great tip.
02:35Also keeping the hair, I
02:37think we should be
02:38straighter.
02:39If you're going to pull it
02:40back, keep it really really
02:41shiny and straight and pull
02:42it back so that's the only
02:43thing that's reconstructed is
02:44the bun on the chignon.
02:45If you bring it forward again,
02:47everything else should be
02:48straight.
02:49The only thing that should
02:51be reconstructed, it should be
02:52the bun.
02:53Right.
02:54So you don't want to mix too
02:55many textures later.
02:56Right.
02:57Talk to me about what you
02:58pull your hair back with.
02:59How much product should you
03:00use?
03:01How much is too much?
03:02I don't like using a lot of
03:03hairspray.
03:04I like to use a little bit
03:05but I do not like using a lot
03:06of hair.
03:07Pomades are much better because
03:08they keep that shine back on
03:09the hair and it also softens
03:10and it's not going to make the
03:11hair feel, how would we say,
03:12dry and flaky or frizzy.
03:14So pomades are really good for
03:15that.
03:16I like oils too but when we
03:19use oils very moderately because
03:21sometimes we lay our hair out
03:23and we walk outside and it's
03:24like so greasy.
03:25Right.
03:26So we need to make sure that
03:27our hair is not greasy but
03:28there's a shine to it.
03:29Right.
03:30There is such thing as using
03:31too much product so moderate.
03:32A little bit goes a long way.
03:33Think about that.
03:34A little bit goes a long way.
03:36Thank you Idris so much for
03:38giving us the inside scoop to
03:40achieving some of these looks
03:41ourselves.
03:42You give us great inspiration
03:45both as a stylist and as a
03:47woman and we're really just
03:48happy to have you here.
03:49Thank you so much.
03:50Great.
03:51Thanks.
03:53Thanks for having me.
03:54Thanks for having me.
