Cost, convenience and familiarity are driving the shift from jet-setting holidays to UK staycations.

00:00more people are rethinking their holiday plans with rising costs making trips abroad feel less
00:08affordable new data suggests that for the first time in recent years staying in the uk might be
00:15becoming the most preferred option for many travelers now research from finder.com shows
00:21uk residents made 94.6 million trips abroad in 2024 spending an estimated 78.6 billion pounds
00:30overseas but data compiled by partyhouses.co.uk using visit britain data suggests 52 percent of
00:39brits now plan a uk staycation in 2025. seamus mccauley from holiday extras says cost ease of
00:47planning and shorter travel times are increasingly shaping where families go i mean i think post
00:53pandemic we certainly saw a lot more holidays because people have been locked inside for a
00:56couple of years and we're still seeing a peak every year i mean last year was the largest number of
01:00flights out of the uk since records began much recovered since the pre-covid times uh this year
01:06we're probably going to see more people fly away again so that there's more holidays every year than
01:10ever i mean that's not necessarily just because of covid people love going away on holiday people
01:14love spending time together so that's you know only sensible i think the the thing to bear in mind
01:18is there's lots of other ways that people can cut the cost of their holiday when we asked this
01:22question a couple of years ago people said there were lots of things they were considering doing
01:26or had already done to reduce the cost of their holiday but others were to do better research and
01:31you know make better efforts to understand where they could go away more cheaply finder.com's research
01:37shows holidays remain the main reason brits travel abroad with spain still the most popular
01:42destination at the same time visit britain backed figures indicate nearly two-thirds of people plan
01:49at least one uk break a year with many choosing familiar places that feel good value yeah despite
01:56you know the changes travel going to europe and you know the things that can impact people's holidays
02:00um we expect it to be uh another bumpy year for travel and that's really because holidays are just so
02:07important to people you know for a lot of people when we asked them i think two-thirds people said
02:12it is the most important time of the year and as as many as 80 percent of people say that actually
02:18it's really really important for their mental health and well-being that they can go away
02:22leave you know day-to-day life behind and enjoy a holiday so we really expect uh people to be
02:29embracing their travels again this year but we know lots of people are looking for something
02:33different they want to go to a new destination or a new resort or city the balance between cost
02:40convenience and experience now appears to be central to how people decide where to holiday
02:46visit britain has also recently reported that domestic overnight visitors spent 32.9 billion pounds on
02:54trips within great britain in 2024 despite fewer trips being taken overall
02:59so for europe it's still uh number one destination so more people will travel to europe from the uk than
03:08they'll go anywhere else um but we also know that people are taking multiple trips each year so you
03:13know a lot of people are lucky enough not just to have one holiday but are able to have a combination so
03:18you might have a holiday in the uk one in europe and then potentially go further afield and so what we're
03:23seeing is yeah europe definitely remains popular but actually people are embracing long haul a bit
03:29more than maybe they used to and part of that is due to the value so it might cost you a bit more
03:36overall but actually for some of these destinations when you're there you know the day-to-day spending
03:40can be less than places perhaps that are closer to home so people are looking at their holidays a bit more
03:46holistically and we also know people are kind of choosing their holidays based on the experiences that
03:52they want to have so we find that a big family holiday every year is a sort of top three spending
03:58priority for most families so once you've paid you know for your housing and for your car making sure
04:03that you still get your holiday is third on the list of things that people won't give up so people
04:07are willing to scrimp and save and make a few budget adjustments to make sure they do get you know a
04:11a week or two in the sun in the summer
