00:00We know that life on Mars is going to be much different than life on Earth, and that means
00:08different houses as well. This is what its developers are calling the Martian house,
00:12and it's a prototype of what Martians might be living in in just a few years. It's an inflatable
00:16structure, meaning it's pretty easy and quick to set up and doesn't need construction equipment to
00:21do so. This is one of the building's architects Hugh Broughton to explain how it works.
00:24It's gold to reflect dangerous solar rays and cosmic radiation, and it's inflatable because
00:30it would be filled with a special concrete made of the dust and water that you find on Mars,
00:35again to protect you from those dangerous solar and cosmic rays. They say they got a lot of their
00:41ideas from buildings that already exist in Antarctica, one of the most inhospitable places on planet Earth.
00:46You have to make the most of every square meter of building that you can possibly build because
00:51it's expensive to build in the Antarctic. You have to limit your water usage, you have to
00:55limit your use of fuel, and you have to support the well-being of people living for sometimes three
01:01or four months in total darkness. But this two-story, 570 square foot structure is only the surface level
01:07building. They want to construct a basement living quarters underneath, made from the already present
01:11lava tubes that exist around the Martian surface.
