00:00Keep doing it girl. That's what I would tell her. I have no regrets about anything I've ever done.
00:05You know, so I would say just keep enjoying it.
00:10I have no regrets about it.
00:15Bart Leighton, the director of Crime 101. Massive, massive fan of American Animals.
00:20But this sounds facetious and I'm not being.
00:23I want to talk a little bit about Bang Up Abroad.
00:25Because that show was, that show was addictive as hell.
00:27How the hell do you go from making one of the most addictive shows?
00:30On Channel 5 for decades. To this moment here. This cast.
00:35Oh man, that's crazy. You've done your homework.
00:37I had this crazy experience where I met Martin Scorsese.
00:40I was a crazy producer and I got called to a meeting and I was like,
00:43Oh, we're going to talk about.
00:45You know, he obviously wants to talk as if he's after the imposter.
00:48He wanted to talk about.
00:50Banged up Abroad.
00:51She was like Martin Scorsese's addicted to it.
00:55How do I go from that to this?
00:57Yeah, like.
00:58I don't know.
00:59You, I don't know.
01:00He's in the tank.
01:01This idea of kind of like writing these kind of movies, scripted movies.
01:04I know that you have.
01:05History in the documentary form and it's kind of like edged through.
01:08American animals was a bit of a hybrid.
01:09Yeah.
01:10Yeah.
01:11I think I always, you know, I love documentary.
01:14I will always.
01:15go back to documentary.
01:16But I felt like I, you know, with the impossible.
01:20And I, it was an interesting hybrid with American animals.
01:23I wanted to play more with.
01:25The form of how you tell a true story and borrow the emotional engagement you get.
01:30from a documentary.
01:31With this, this was like.
01:32What was it like based on?
01:33What did.
01:33I know.
01:34What are you doing?
01:35I know, what was it like.
01:36What was it like.
01:37What was it like.
01:38I got to get from a documentary?
01:39This was like.
01:41What was it like this is.
01:43This was like.
01:45And this was like.
01:46What was?
01:47What was it like.
01:48It was like a, like, black love family picture and a, like, big love sin.
01:53and in you all about stuff.
01:54Right?
01:54Interesting.
01:55I think I had something.
01:56Do have to wing arms.
01:58I hope really tense suspenseful scenes but we never
02:03went so far into movie world that you lost your connection to the character.
02:08So that you no longer related to them.
02:10They're a bit like us.
02:11You know, Chris is an incredible.
02:13But it's not James Bond in this.
02:15It could go wrong.
02:17You know that that.
02:18Keeping everything on the edge of like just keeping one foot.
02:23And reality was always dementia.
02:24I think because she's so much like me, I related to her being a woman.
02:28Of a certain age and you know what we're facing today socially with women being.
02:33Sort of discarded at a certain age and made to feel invaluable as if we.
02:38I have nothing left to contribute and it eats my.
02:43You know.
02:44And so to be able to portray this character and have my say on film through art.
02:48It was just wildly gratifying.
02:49It was great to have you back in London, Hallie.
02:51I think the first time you're here.
02:53Red carpet was back in 2000, wasn't it?
02:55For X-Men.
02:56Talk me through that experience.
02:58To now what advice would you give a younger Hallie Berry when she first stepped up on this
03:01carpet all those years ago?
03:03Keep doing it girl.
03:04That's what I would tell her.
03:06I have no regrets about anything.
03:08I've ever done.
03:09You know.
03:10So I would say just keep enjoying it.
03:11I've always enjoyed this.
03:12I've never.
03:13taken any of it for granted and I'm just so grateful that at almost 60 I'm still here.
03:18doing the thing I love.
03:19And Uncle Footman.
03:20Hello.
03:21Hello.
03:22Me and my.
03:23Mrs.
03:24re-watched The Crown last year.
03:25Great episode.
03:26Thank you so much.
03:27Great episode.
03:28How does it feel to go from that to something like this?
03:31I mean some of the biggest stars.
03:33in the world.
03:34With a really unique writer director.
03:37You're doing.
03:38Like talk me through this experience over the last 12 months.
03:40I mean I think you know.
03:43How much are you doing for you?
03:44How much are you doing for you?
03:45There was a lot of time between doing The Crown and this.
03:47Right.
03:48The Crown was the first TV series that I did and it was like.
03:53looking into Disneyland.
03:54It was absolutely extraordinary and I had a similar experience.
03:58with this.
03:59Walking onto set.
04:00Getting to work with Chris.
04:01Getting to work with Bart.
04:03I mean they're both incredible artists and to be accepted.
04:08as someone that is at a level and on par with them.
04:13It was wonderful.
04:14You know being an actor is tough.
04:18But then every now and then you get these.
04:21You get thrown above.
04:23Yeah.
04:24And yeah.
04:25It's a real privilege.
04:26And every job.
04:28is a learning experience.
04:29And an experience to kind of impart your own knowledge.
04:33as well.
04:34Working alongside people like Halle Berry has been top of the game for 30 years.
04:38Mark Ruffalo.
04:39One of the finest kind of screen actors we've seen over the last kind of like 15-20 years.
04:43What was the kind of your take away on set?
04:46Was there anything that you tried to kind of.
04:48just like soak up sponge up while you're in there?
04:53Not really.
04:54I think.
04:55It's very easy to.
04:58put these people on a pedestal because they're so talented and gorgeous.
05:03I think.
05:04But I think.
05:05If you get the.
05:06If you get the.
05:07If you get the.
05:08great luck of working with these people.
05:10You realize that they're just people.
05:12And.
05:13Um.
05:14It's very equalizing.
05:15So.
05:16I don't know.
05:17I.
05:18I don't know if I learned anything.
05:18necessarily.
05:19I had a really amazing time though.
05:21And.
05:22How would you.
05:23sum up a movie like this?
05:24Because.
05:25What is kind of.
05:26You know.
05:27American animals.
05:28It's kind of like that.
05:28hybrid.
05:29So like.
05:30Documentary and drama.
05:31It feels like he's got a very.
05:32Unique.
05:33voice.
05:34In.
05:35In directing.
05:36And people might see the trailer of this and go okay well this is.
05:38You're sort of like.
05:39Crime by numbers.
05:40Sort of detective mystery action.
05:41Sort of maybe.
05:42But.
05:43What.
05:44What can we actually expect.
05:45What should we go in there.
05:46Hoping for.
05:47Or what are we going to come.
05:48out with.
05:49It's a very good question.
05:50I've not seen it.
05:51So I don't know.
05:52Only the scene.
05:53since you've been in.
05:54I've not even seen them.
05:55Oh my word.
05:56Yeah.
05:57This could be a massive.
05:58I'm coming in.
05:59Hot.
06:00I've not seen anything.
06:01Alright.
06:02We'll catch you on the next carpet.
06:03And we'll find out.
06:04How you felt about this one.
06:05Congratulations.
