Freezing rain and sleet are responsible for some of the most dangerous driving conditions during the winter. AccuWeather's Anna Azallion offers the best safety tips if driving on ice is unavoidable.

00:00Now one thing sleet and freezing rain do have in common is the advice we were giving you about how
00:05to approach leaving your house basically. Now as we go through the next couple of days
00:10it might be unavoidable you might be on the road and hit some ice it's best
00:15to know what to do just in case because each night we have the risk of refreeze that means the road
00:20needs treated again it's just inevitable. So take it slow make sure you're giving yourself extra time
00:25to get where you need to go. Also I know it can feel a little bit annoying
00:30but make sure you're following distance behind cars give it a little extra space then
00:35you typically would so that you have more time if you hit ice to not hit
00:40the car in front of you basically. Now if you do hit ice you do not want to slam on the brakes.
00:45I know that might be your instinct however you're just not going to have the traction.
00:50Take your foot off and if you have to swerve a little bit do it slowly.
00:55You don't hit anybody.
