00:00Former cult leader Paul McKenzie, already on trial for multiple counts of manslaughter, is facing new charges, Kenyan prosecutors said on Monday.
00:11A self-proclaimed preacher and former taxi driver, McKenzie led an infamous starvation cult that killed more than 400 people.
00:19The so-called Shakahola Forest Massacre took place near the beach resort of Melindi and came to light in 2023.
00:27McKenzie has pleaded not guilty.
00:30He's now being charged with 52 further deaths in the remote village of Binsaro, where more bodies were found last year.
00:38The discovery appeared to show that the same cult had continued to operate, even after the first massacre site was discovered and McKenzie arrested.
00:49He's been accused in previous Shakahola trials of inciting his followers to starve themselves to meet Jesus.
00:57Using enforcers to prevent people from leaving the forest.
01:01Efforts to regulate religion in Kenya have been opposed in the past as undermining the division between church and state.
