01:33A little bit less than two minutes left.
01:35Carson Beck.
01:36And they need a touchdown to win the Natty.
01:39Did you think they were going to do it?
01:42Well, I picked, obviously, Indiana to win the game.
01:44We documented on the show last week.
01:46And all throughout the game, I'm watching it.
01:47And I go, Indiana's going to win.
01:49Indiana's going to win.
01:50And after those two third-down conversions to Cooper and Becker, I'm like, all right,
01:54they're going to go score a touchdown.
01:56And they didn't.
01:56And Beck gets the ball back.
01:58And I go, all right, here's the Ole Miss moment again.
02:01And then Carson Beck made one of the worst throws that you're ever going to see.
02:05So you even got me when he is moving the ball down the field to say, okay, this is going
02:12to happen.
02:12And this is going to be an unbelievable moment for the U.
02:16And then Carson Beck basically said, P-U.
02:18Because what the heck was he?
02:19Even if Crowder, like, he throws the ball and he doesn't underthrow it.
02:24But I still think that safety is going to pick it off.
02:27I don't think either way that that's going to be coming on down as a Miami catch.
02:33No, I think he didn't.
02:35The scheme of it was not good.
02:37The scheme of it wasn't good.
02:38That corner had no reason to stay in the flat.
02:40As you looked at it, I think if it was a bad throw, if it was a little higher or even outside,
02:46now it's incompletion.
02:47Now you're sitting at third and eight, whatever it was.
02:50So it was a bad decision.
02:53But I don't think it was the worst thing.
02:54But, Gell, I was going to ask you, like, as you watch the game, like, people made bad
02:58plays.
02:59Like, I think the game was decided on that blocked punt.

03:02Because if now you don't let them block that punt, now you can look at the score in retrospect

03:07But they were speaking about the game as if Signetti was just going to flat out out coach
03:11Mario Cristobal.
03:12I was impressed by Mario, Shannon Dawson, Heatherman coming out blitzing the hell out of him early
03:18on.
03:19Like, I think this coaching staff got something, man.
03:21The defense did an incredible job.
03:23And I look back at it.
03:25The two moments to me outside of the special teams, right?
03:29Because Miami missed the field goal.
03:30Then they also had the block punt.
03:32That fourth down run by Mendoza, you just got to tip your cap to him.
03:37How he avoided the defender and got the first down was one thing.
03:41How he then turned it into a touchdown is another thing.
03:45But where Signetti gets the praise is just the building of Indiana.
03:48They're the all-time losing his college football program.
03:50He goes there in two years.
03:52They win more games than anybody could imagine.
03:53And obviously, Indiana winning a national championship was never on anybody's bingo card.
03:57But something that is not like, I'm sure you guys have talked about it, but in the national
04:01landscape, when he called that timeout late, Signetti, I'm like, what is he doing?
04:06Why would you call a timeout there?
04:08And then right off of that, they end up getting the interception.
04:11So maybe slowing down the game there did obviously end up helping Indiana at the end of the game.
04:18Or the fact that Beck got his bell rung on the play before.
04:22Remember, he literally, there was a personal foul.
04:24It was a third and long, and they bailed Miami out.
04:26Got to move the chains.
04:27I don't know, Gallup.
04:28I wonder if Beck was kind of just going through it at that point.
04:32But do you consider the Indiana run one of these all-time great college football runs?
04:42Or are they an all-time great college football team?
04:45How do you view them winning the national championship?
04:48Because yes, Signetti's a baller.
04:51He's cool as hell.
04:52Mendoza proved it in Miami.
04:56And I just wonder, are they an all-time great college football team?
04:59Or was just the run special?
05:02It's the most impressive national championship I've ever seen.
05:06And that wording is very key.
05:08They're not the greatest team of all time.
05:09If they played that LSU team from a few years ago, I do think LSU would win.
05:14But this story, the thing that I look back and kind of equate it to,
05:18because you can't do individual upsets.
05:20Indiana was supposed to beat Miami in this game.
05:23It's 1980 U.S. hockey.
05:26Like the idea that you take amateurs and they beat the Soviets to eventually go on and beat Finland and win a gold medal.
05:35No one would have ever believed that if you said that before the start of that Olympics.
05:39Now, when you look at this run, when Signetti got there and he comes in, he's like,
05:44Purdue sucks and so does Michigan and so does Ohio State.
05:47Like, Google me.
05:48All I do is win.
05:49Didn't we all think we're going to be able to use that against Kurt Signetti?
05:52And they made the playoff last year.
05:53And just making the playoff was simply unbelievable.
05:56I thought this year they'd lose three or four games probably.
05:59And they'd take a step back.
06:00But it's still good for the Indiana standard.
06:02The fact that they got better and they were undefeated to win the national championship.
06:06These two years, like Saban, what he did was unbelievable.
06:11The dynasty at Alabama.
06:12But at least, like, they had Paul Bear Bryant, right, all those years ago.
06:16And how great Alabama football was.
06:18For Signetti to do this in two years and how many different ways there is to win a team,
06:23it's the most impressive coaching job I've seen in my lifetime.
06:27And, Gail, Tom Brady was on the sideline.
06:30We know he's a partial owner of the Raiders and they have the first pick.
06:33And Mendoza's probably going to go one.
06:35I watched the entire Oregon game and I watched the entire national championship game.
06:40I think Mendoza's about to be Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer.
06:44Like, I don't think he's about to be Patrick Mahomes.
06:46I'm not impressed by Mendoza, even though he won the Heisman.
06:49I know you watch more college football than I have.
06:51He does not impress me.
06:53Okay.
06:54Is he going to be elite?
06:56Is he going to be an MVP?
06:57Am I sitting there saying, getting ready to get his Hall of Fame jacket?
07:00No.
07:02But when he just did this, you know what it reminds me of?
07:05It reminds me of the Joe Burrow story.
07:06Now, I get it.
07:07Burrow was more highly touted.
07:09He went to LSU the first year.
07:11No one was saying that Joe Burrow was this stud.
07:14They were talking about that running back, Nick Brossette.
07:17But then that last year, he went from a fifth or a sixth round draft pick to the number one overall pick, undefeated national champion, and won the Heisman Trophy.
07:27That's basically what Fernando Mendoza just did.
07:29I don't know how it translates to the NFL, but he is deserving of the shot.
07:34He's deserving of being the number one overall pick in a weak quarterback draft class.
07:37And look what he did at Indiana.
07:39If he could then bring the Raiders back to respectability, like, geez, we're talking about that at all time.
07:46Just great football player when you look at college and the NFL.
07:50I think he has a chance to be good in the NFL, but I'm not saying there and sitting there and saying it's a slam dunk.
