00:01U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism Tuesday that a deal can be reached to address
00:06his interest in acquiring Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark.
00:11How far are you willing to go to acquire Greenland?
00:15You'll find out.
00:16Trump spoke to reporters at the White House before heading to Davos, Switzerland for meetings
00:21at the World Economic Forum Wednesday, including with NATO.
00:25I think that we will work something out where NATO is going to be very happy and where we're
00:30going to be very happy.
00:32But we need it for security purposes.
00:34We need it for national security and even world security.
00:37Earlier, Trump posted an AI image on social media showing him planting a flag on the Arctic
00:43island, with members of his administration behind him.
00:47Another featured a map in the Oval Office indicating Canada and Greenland were under U.S. control.
00:53European leaders took to the stage in Davos, attempting to project the continent's strength,
00:58though it was not immediately clear how the European Union will eventually respond.
01:03French President Emmanuel Macron said the EU should not bend to the law of the strongest.
01:08We do believe that we need more growth.
01:11We need more stability in this world.
01:14But we do prefer respect to bullies.
01:18We do prefer science to plutonism.
01:20And we do prefer rule of law to brutality.
01:23Trump has vowed to impose tariffs on countries that stood in his way.
01:27Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his disapproval of that approach.
01:33Canada strongly opposes tariffs over Greenland and calls for focused talks to achieve our
01:39shared objectives of security and prosperity in the Arctic.
01:43Meanwhile, U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer explained the administration's rationale.
01:48I would say that that is an appropriate use of tariffs.
01:52So I have, as you noted, I've gone over the economic rationale for all of this.
01:57In the United States, other countries as well, there's a long history of using tools that
02:02are at the nexus of economics and national security.
02:05U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik said if the EU were to retaliate, it would likely
02:11repeat the pattern that occurred before the two sides agreed on a trade deal last year.
02:16Then we'll be back to a tit-for-tat, which is how we began, and it will end in a very positive
02:22conversation between Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen, which is what happened last time.
02:27So you can start with a kerfuffle, but in the end, right, the United States and Europe are great allies.
02:33MILES O' Trump's renewed tariff threats against European allies have revived talk of the
02:39sell America trade that emerged in the aftermath of his sweeping tariffs last April.
02:45Wall Street's main indexes ended sharply lower on Tuesday, and U.S. Treasuries were sold off.
