00:00College football season, Dustin, it comes to an end, but not without some controversy.
00:04Of course, whenever you have college football's two teams playing for a championship, you're going to get a lot of words back and forth here.
00:10No surprise here that college football seemingly simply OK with the idea that sports betting is legal across the country.
00:16But now once prediction markets have sort of taken over, it feels like the NCAA is giving that pause as far as any partnerships or involvement and even just having them available.
00:27Yeah, the NCAA always has a complicated relationship with with sports betting.
00:32It's, of course, they were the title litigants in the in the fall of the federal ban.
00:37They were trying to stop New Jersey from offering it.
00:40They just don't like sports betting, right?
00:42I think they understand that people bet on their their games and it probably drives engagement.
00:46But at the end of the day, they see this as a threat.
00:48We know all the scandals that have happened around college sports recently, especially in college basketball.
00:54And I think the NCAA just sees this as a threat.
00:57There's they see this as a new way to gamble on things, and they're not quite sure that this is what they want moving forward because they don't have a whole lot of control over it, at least in the regulated sports betting industry.
01:08They have a little bit of a measure of control, right?
01:10They they know where it's going to happen.
01:12They they get a little bit of what they want, a give and take with the sports books with the prediction markets.
01:16I don't think they feel like they have that.
01:18So, yeah, we've had NCAA president Charlie Baker come out.
01:21There's been very loud about this issue recently.
01:23They said he sent a letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which oversees the prediction markets like Calci and Poly market and basically said he's asking Congress to to do something about this or for the CFTC to kind of rein this in.
01:36They doesn't want profits.
01:38Ideally, he would probably like for college betting to go away entirely versus prediction markets.
01:42And I don't think that's terribly likely.
01:44We even had the new head of the CFTC this morning come out and basically said he wants fewer rules, not more.
01:49So the idea that that they're going to they're going to wall off college prop betting or college betting in entirety, not real likely for the prediction markets.
01:57I mean, the best case, I mean, the best way for this all to get shut down is going to be through the courts.
02:02And that may or may not happen in the long term.
02:04So right now, I just don't see this this going away, at least on the college level of prediction markets.
02:10You're going to be able to bet on March Madness at prediction markets and they haven't really gotten in the props yet either.
02:14So we'll see if they really want to get it like we'll see if Cal she wants to do that moving forward and other prediction markets.
02:20I think they will.
02:21And we'll see obviously here in the in the coming weeks and months and leading into next football season, how far they go in allowing more and more granular markets on on football.
