00:00On this day in space.
00:04On January 20, 1978, the Soviet space program launched the first ever Progress cargo ship
00:09on a mission to deliver supplies to the Salyut 6 space station.
00:12Since then, more than 150 Progress spacecraft have launched cargo to the crews aboard the
00:16International Space Station, as well as earlier, smaller space stations built by Russia and
00:20the Soviet Union.
00:22Progress 1 carried nearly 3,000 pounds of food, water, scientific equipment, and spare
00:27parts to the two-person crew aboard Salyut 6.
00:30The cosmonauts unloaded the cargo, then filled the spacecraft with trash and sent it off to
00:34burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
00:35And that's what happened on this day in space.
