00:00But it is not only a Tier Tuesday, it is also a Tommy Tuesday.
00:03Tommy Curran is brought to you by your New England Chevy dealers,
00:06Together Let's Drive, and by Shaw's and Star Market.
00:09At Shaw's and Star Market, they're proud to be local since 1860.
00:13Tommy Curran, how are we doing this week?
00:15Good, what's going on, boys?
00:17We're doing very, very well.
00:19We started the show, and I want to get to the AFC Championship game matchup with Denver.
00:24We started the show talking about another strong defensive performance,
00:27second week in a row now in the postseason.
00:29First the Chargers, now the Houston Texans.
00:32This past week, is this defense good enough to carry this team to a Super Bowl championship?
00:39It's good enough to be competitive with everybody, obviously,
00:44because they've been dominant in the first two games.
00:46But everything has to do with people.
00:49Everything has to do with the humans in the uniforms.
00:52It's not necessarily scheme or that can play a role,
00:56but they have Milton Williams back.
00:59They have Robert Stellane back.
01:01Harold Landry was back.
01:02Not too effective the other day, but every level of their defense,
01:06Kyrus Tonga was back.
01:07That defense was really, really, really good when those guys were there.
01:11Again, it goes to who's out there for the other team, too.
01:14Those teams were kind of banged up.
01:17No O'Meary in Hampton.
01:18No Nico Collins.
01:19Banged up and not very good offensive line for the Chargers.
01:24Not really an effective offensive line or effective running back in place for Houston.
01:29So, they are very good, and they were very good for the large part of the season.
01:34But there's going to be games when they see a quarterback,
01:38most likely the Super Bowl if they get Stafford,
01:40who could say they're a good team, but we're pretty good, too.
01:46You know, as for the Patriots quarterback, Drake May,
01:48we saw him put the ball on the ground a whole bunch of times against Houston.
01:51They weren't really able to take advantage of that.
01:54But just how big of an issue is the fumbling right now for Drake May?
01:57Yeah, they're going to want to have him stop that.
02:00Yeah, that'd help.
02:03I mean, there's nothing else he could really say.
02:07I mean, it's like we've talked about it so often with his ball security,
02:12and there are times when it improves.
02:14I would say this, the one ball security thing that I would say,
02:18they're all to an extent on him.
02:20When he's going down and it gets punched out, that's the most egregious.
02:25The other ones are you can't have two hands on the ball when you're throwing it
02:30unless it's going to be an overhead soccer pass,
02:33which I don't think is going to be effective.
02:35So there's a point at which you have to rear back and get ready to throw,
02:41and the ball's in one hand.
02:42So he shouldn't double clutch prior.
02:45If he's doing any double clutching, you should say, well,
02:48if I have to double clutch, maybe not throw.
02:50But they have to protect better to prevent those too.
02:56So, I mean, it kind of – anybody watching the games from your grandmother
03:00who watches twice a year to the most seasoned expert would be able to say,
03:06yeah, they're better when they don't drop it.
03:09Well, and I was saying – I mean, yeah, obviously, you know,
03:11the whole turnover differential, that's easy.
03:14But even going into the Houston game, I was like,
03:16they can have one more turnover, maybe even two more turnovers.
03:19Like, I just didn't think Stroud and that offense was going to be able to score a whole lot.
03:23And I feel the same way about Denver where you're like,
03:25all right, it's a backup quarterback.
03:26They have a great defense.
03:27And so even if May does fumble once or twice, like, you know,
03:31you could probably get by with that.
03:33But any more than that, then now you're kind of tipping the scales.
03:36And, you know, that allows Denver to, you know, find a way to win.
03:39I know.
03:39Yeah.
03:39Yeah, it's funny.
03:40I mean, like, where does he fumble?
03:42When does he fumble?
03:43When does he fumble?
03:44All those things will enter into it.
03:45He threw a pick the other day right before the half.
03:47Who cares?
03:48You know, people will go, oh, he threw a pick-and-back game in 20 years.
03:52But you're right.
03:54It's who are you playing against and how costly is the fumble
03:57and what's the nature of the fumble?
04:00So it absolutely enters into it.
04:03Sometimes a turnover is the cost of doing business.
04:08Remember the Josh Allen fumble in the first meeting with the Patriots this year?
04:12Oh, yeah.
04:12Just inexplicable, floppy ass on his own 11 on the first drive of the game.
04:18That type of thing is maddening.
04:20At least these fumbles and ball control issues are May trying to be May in terms of he's got his shoulders
04:29completely tilted and he looks like he's about to throw a javelin because he's throwing downfield.
04:34So at least it's in the context of him being himself in those Frips acts.
04:41It's just be cognizant.
04:42If you can, or if you're Will Campbell or Jared Wilson or anybody else, they scream, look out!
04:48So it doesn't happen.
04:49That's this week's Drake take from Tommy Curran presented by your New England Chevy dealers.
04:55So you just mentioned, Tom, a couple of times in those answers, Will Campbell.
05:00He's allowed 10 pressures so far in the postseason.
05:03He's allowed four sacks, which is the most in the postseason, according to NFL NextGenStats.
05:08What's been his issue, in your view?
05:12People.
05:13The players he's going against are really good.
05:16I imagine that his MCL injury is not helping him that much, and the Patriots are saying,
05:23go ahead and try and block these guys, Will.
05:27You might play 140 offensive snaps or however many they've played,
05:31and you might be pass blocking on 50 or 60 of them over two games.
05:37If you're pass blocking, you know, you're going to allow some pressures.
05:41You're going to allow some sacks.
05:43You might allow strip sacks, but we still believe in you, even though you're a rookie.
05:47You know, I had someone mention the other day, Jonathan Ogden is a rookie.
05:50He needed help all the time because of the nature of the players that he was playing against
05:56in the AFC North with the Steelers, et cetera.
06:02Jonathan Ogden was with the Ravens.
06:03Folks who are listening, he's a left tackle.
06:05He's a Hall of Famer.
06:05He's one of the best who's ever played.
06:07So that's the problem.
06:09They're just going to keep running good players at you in a little bit.
06:13Jared Verse, if you get to the Rams or whoever else, you know.
06:16Whitney, I don't have the Seahawks roster open off the top of my head,
06:20but I'm sure if they have a defense that is that nasty,
06:24the name should be on the tip of my tongue.
06:27Jared Stidham, what are your thoughts on him?
06:30I know six years ago, we all had to have a lot of thoughts on him
06:33because it looked like he was going to be Tom Brady's replacement.
06:36He never was.
06:38Josh McDaniels had him with the Raiders,
06:40and then he's kind of been out of sight, out of mind.
06:42We've highlighted how he hasn't started a game in a couple of years,
06:46so it is very different than the Nick Foles, even like Jeff Hostetler,
06:50like backup quarterbacks trying to win a big game.
06:52Way different.
06:52I agree, way, way different.
06:54But just like what kind of a puncher's chance do you even give Stidham
06:58of having a somewhat decent game?
07:01Because the one thing I would say is like him being worse than C.J. Stroud
07:04would be tough.
07:05Like even a guy that hasn't played,
07:07turning it over to that degree I think would be difficult.
07:11But just your overall thoughts going into this one on Jared Stidham.
07:15I give him a puncher's chance is the way to put it.
07:18The Patriots are reasonably favored as four-point favorites.
07:24If Jared Stidham was the drop-off slash punchline that he is being portrayed to be
07:31by many in the New England media who just really don't know what his skill set is,
07:37the Patriots would be 15-point favorites.
07:40He gives them a puncher's chance.
07:42He's got as good an arm as virtually any starter in the league, and I truly mean that.
07:48His problem is when he was with the Patriots, I mean, sometimes it's opportunity.
07:53And his opportunity was in 2020, and Bill decided, you know what?
07:56I'm going to go with Cam Newton.
07:58And that was in part because Stidham was a pick factory during training camp.
08:04He injured his knee.
08:06Cam came in.
08:07He had great presence.
08:08He was able to mitigate the problems the Patriots had at their wide receiver core.
08:13I think it was Demir Bird was their best wide receiver that year.
08:18So they were able to mitigate things because Cam was able to be a running quarterback.
08:25So Stidham never really got his opportunity.
08:26Here they draft Mac Jones.
08:27He is not bad.
08:29He is not embarrassing.
08:32He could start for teams.
08:35He could compete for starting jobs for teams.
08:37Denver, as they've said and will continue to say, are lucky to have him.
08:41He's not going to play worse than C.J. Stroud.
08:44The reason?
08:45He's going to have an offensive line made up of Quinn Miners and Mike McGlinchey
08:49and a number of other competent offensive linemen in front of them.
08:53So there'll be a puncher's chance.
08:55Might he throw and not see Jalen Hawkins because he's not played in three years
08:59and Jalen Hawkins is lurking in coverage?
09:03Yep.
09:04That might happen.
09:05But he is probably going to not embarrass himself.
09:08Okay.
09:09So maybe you just answered this, but I want to put more of a point on it.
09:11If they lose to Jarrett Stidham and it's at Denver, they've never won a playoff game at Denver,
09:16and the season's been very successful, and I didn't expect him to be in an AFC title game.
09:20But if they lose to Stidham and this is the final hurdle before the Super Bowl, is that a choke?
09:24I don't know.
09:29I don't know.
09:32I think you and I would probably define it differently.
09:35How would you define a choke?
09:36So now we've moved on from is the season of failure to is the season a choke?
09:40Well, no, no, not is the season a choke, but I just said the season is a success.
09:45No, no, no.
09:45I just said the season's a success.
09:47I know, I know, I know.
09:48I know you have.
09:48I know you have, but now we're on to it's a choke.
09:51Okay.
09:52Well, it's Jarrett Stidham.
09:53It sounds like you're higher on it.
09:54You can just say no, but that would be a choke for me.
10:00Yeah.
10:01I mean, you're springing it on me.
10:02It's the first time I thought of it.
10:03It would certainly be, as I've said before, cripplingly disappointing to go up against the backup
10:08court.
10:09How does he play, though?
10:09Does he play out of his frigging mind and throw up a 431 and the throws are insane?
10:16I mean, or do they absolutely show up and have absolutely no competitive ability against
10:22them?
10:22I mean, choke is to pee down your leg.
10:27And if the Patriots are not able to score more than the Broncos and the Broncos score
10:3321, then that's kind of chokey.
10:38Okay.
10:38I don't know, man.
10:40I don't know.
10:41We do this all the time.
10:42Is it a failure?
10:43Is it a success?
10:44Is it a choke?
10:45Is it not?
10:46And I get pinned into this stuff, Jonesy, and it's like, I don't know, because I actually
10:51really think about the questions you pose and try to come up with an answer that's reasoned.
10:56And there's too many frigging hypotheticals because then we end up with, on social media,
11:01current says Patriots choke if they lose.
11:04Well, I mean, really?
11:05Well, I mean, again, that's why I don't play along sometimes.
11:08Okay.
11:08Well, that's fine.
11:08You can say no.
11:09But I'm just setting expectations before going into a game really is all it is.
11:13I just, it's a really good spot to be in.
11:14I hate playing at Denver.
11:16That's a hard spot to play.
11:17They've never won there.
11:18But it is a gift to get Stidham.
11:19I mean, it would be my view.
11:20I'm not putting words in your mouth.
11:21That's my view.
11:22Yeah.
11:23All that stuff is acknowledged.
11:24It will be cripplingly disappointing.
11:27Choke is a loaded word.
11:28So I'm not playing on the choke game.
11:32Yeah.
11:33And I even saw, I know you said four.
11:35I've seen like five and a half point spread, which is sort of like lean a little bit more
11:37into that, I guess.
11:38You know, once you start getting closer to a touchdown and you lose that game.
11:42But I hear you.
11:43I'm curious your thoughts.
11:44Yeah.
11:45I'm curious your thoughts on.
11:46My giving all this talk about how good Jarrett Stidham is is not to pretend, uh-oh, look
11:52out, they might lose to the Broncos because Jarrett Stidham's going to play out of his
11:55mind.
11:56It's just a level of, I think he could play really well.
12:00They should win the game.
12:01They're reasonably favored by four.
12:03By the time Sunday comes and I have to make a pick, I'll probably say like 24-20 Patriots.
12:07But it's not going to be rolled because he doesn't know where to line up.
12:12He's not going to be lining up behind the guard all day.
12:14Yeah, I just think, you know, we've seen two really bad quarterback games against the
12:19Patriots and even this Texans game.
12:21It was a game.
12:22Like you were on the edge of your seat the whole time and that guy played terrible.
12:25So I don't think it's going to be a cakewalk or anything like that.
12:28But it doesn't mean you weren't just sort of gift wrapped one.
12:31This isn't, you know, you're playing the Pacers without Halliburton in the conference
12:34finals.
12:34I was like, you should win the series type of thing.
12:38I'm curious though on Travion Henderson who had a run there for a stretch of games where
12:43he looked like a dynamic weapon for this offense.
12:47I'm curious where you think he's at right now where I feel like I have way more confidence
12:52when Ramondre Stevenson gets the ball now or when they throw to Ramondre and Henderson
12:57doesn't seem to be the same player these last few games.
13:00Yeah, I agree with you.
13:03And I wonder if it's, you know, the nature of splitting carries.
13:06Somebody has to get into a groove and somebody doesn't.
13:08And Henderson, I think, got into that groove and ran with more confidence.
13:13But I wonder why Henderson is not an in-space pass catcher at all, nor is Stevenson.
13:23Just neither of them.
13:24And Stevenson has had a very good year and he's had very good seasons as a pass catcher.
13:29But Henderson really doesn't get featured in the passing game very often.
13:35But I have noticed it.
13:37But every once in a while, like when they were trying to kill clock the other day, it
13:41was Stevenson, Stevenson, Stevenson, and then Henderson ripped off, I believe, it was
13:44like a six-yarder.
13:45So I see what you're saying.
13:47I'm almost in my mind's eye when the ball is handed to Stevenson.
13:52You feel a little bit better as a consumer.
13:55I'm like, yeah, good.
13:55Okay, Stevenson.
13:57Yeah, he's like falling forward for like five yards, where I feel like there's way more
14:00Henderson like into the line of scrimmage and down.
14:03At least these playoff games, he's averaging like less than three yards a carry.
14:06So it's sort of, yeah.
14:07I agree.
14:08And I wonder if, again, it's the byproduct of the really good defenses they're seeing.
14:12True.
14:13True.
14:13Do you think Mac Hollins plays this week?
14:18Yeah, just based on the commentary from a couple of his teammates who said, hey, when
14:23this one we get Mac Hollins back, would probably be, that's an indication, I think it was Diggs
14:28and somebody else, but that's an indication that they are on the side talking to Mac Hollins
14:33and saying, yeah, I'll be able to go next week if I can get there, if we can get there.
14:36So I'm guessing yes.
14:38Okay.
14:38He is Tommy Curran.
14:39Tommy Tuesday, every Tuesday at high noon here on Jones and Keefe.
14:43You can check him out at NBC Sports Boston.
14:44Yes, Keefe?
14:44Oh, real quick.
14:45I just, do you have any thoughts on the Buffalo Bills opening?
14:49Sean McDermott obviously out.
14:51Is there a guy there that you think would be a good fit to sort of keep the Bills back
14:56on track and fighting with the Patriots for the next few years?
14:58I would, I would hire Dayball.
15:01Okay.
15:01Yeah.
15:01I really would.
15:02Yeah.
15:03I would hire Dayball, but I mean, you're, you're within the state borders where he was
15:08just a disaster with the Giants.
15:10Right.
15:10And again, so it's, it might be hard for people to swallow, but I would hire Dayball.
15:15I think he's a good coach.
15:17Okay.
15:18Uh, Tommy Curran, check him out at Tom E. Curran on Twitter.
15:20We talk to him every Tuesday at high noon.
15:22Tom, as always, we appreciate the time.
15:24Thanks so much.
15:25Bye guys.
15:26Thank you, Tom.
15:27Tommy Curran joining us here on a Tommy Tuesday with Jones and Keith.
15:32So he's got Dayball.
15:33He's got Dayball.
15:34So I think Dayball as the OC makes a lot of sense there, but I mean, maybe as the head
15:39coach.
15:39It has just been rearranging deck chairs with all these coaches, right?
15:43Yeah.
15:43You see the latest one?
15:44Uh, I guess this was actually a little bit ago.
15:46We missed it, but, uh, the Titans have a new head coach.
15:49Oh, Sala?
15:49Yeah.
15:50Yeah.
15:50Overnight.
15:51I saw, honestly, I woke up and Schefter had, I counted them this morning because it's so
15:55annoying.
15:55He does this.
15:55I think it was 11 straight tweets about Robert Sala.
15:58Oh my God.
15:59Like we get it, dude.
15:59It's like, yeah, they hired, it's one tweet.
16:01They hired Robert Sala and then he's got him in like, he's got him in like the Titans
16:05hoodie and he's got him, uh, uh, superimposed into a picture with Cam Ward.
16:09So six jobs are open.
16:11So, uh, Robert Sala to the Titans, John Harbaugh to the Giants, Kevin Stefanski to the Falcons,
16:16Jeff Halfley, who, uh, got BC to the promised land to the Dolphins, the Dolphins.
16:21Oh yeah.
16:21So sorry.
16:22So that's not rearranging.
16:23That's a guy who has not been a coach.
16:24Well, so Harbaugh, Stefanski rearranging.
16:26Sala was a coordinator for a couple of years.
16:28But was a head coach.
16:29Yeah.
16:29And then Halfley.
16:30So Bill, Steelers, Ravens, Browns, Cardinals, Raiders.
16:33And then the update today is Tomlin.
16:35Sorry, Tomlin.
16:36Uh, Flores interviewed with the Steelers.
16:38McCarthy and Flores are both going to interview with Pittsburgh.
16:40Got it.
16:40Yeah.
16:41Uh, to replace Tomlin there.
16:43So we'll see what goes on with that.
16:44All right.
16:45I don't think I'd go day ball there.
16:47I think if you could get him back as the OC, I would.
16:49I think Flores day ball makes a ton of sense.
16:50You want to get, I don't know about day ball.
16:51If you want to get him as your OC, I agree with you.
16:53I don't think I'd go with him as the head coach.
16:54But yeah, Flores and him would be dynamite.
16:56Then again, if Josh Allen's like, that's the guy I like, you probably got to kind of hard
16:59to not do that.
17:00Yeah.
