European farmers staged a protest outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg against the EU–Mercosur trade agreement, warning the deal threatens their livelihoods and fails to ensure fair competition. Demonstrators waved banners reading “Stop Mercosur” and “Von der Leyen Go Home,” as tractors lined the streets near the parliament.
Farmers from France and Italy said the agreement lacks reciprocity and allows imports that do not meet EU standards. The protest comes as EU lawmakers prepare to vote on whether to refer the Mercosur deal to the EU Court of Justice and suspend its ratification. The agreement, signed last week after 25 years of negotiations, has sparked widespread backlash across Europe’s agricultural sector.
