00:00So I've had a lifelong career in health, worked as an AMBO, later as a doctor, and to be able
00:10to make a bit of a small difference in people's lives for improved health and well-being I think
00:15makes a big difference. So I've been involved with St John when my mum and dad kind of got
00:22me along to one of their cadet evenings a long time ago and thought, oh this is alright. As an
00:28adult I went back as a volunteer. I volunteered for St John as an ambulance officer. I've now
00:34involved, I've been privileged to be the National Youth Officer, so leading the youth program of
00:40around about 3,000 young people from all around Australia. The St John youth program helps develop
00:46young people through first aid skills to make them more resilient especially in times of crisis
00:51or in life-restening situations. It builds community that they're a part of it, that they need to
00:57actively contribute to make the community even better than what they, what it is. And finally
01:02service. So service to each other, service to other people, because small actions make
01:08a big difference in people's lives. I would love for young people's voices to be heard, for
01:15adults to take an active interest, be involved in their development, build their future. I've
01:21had a lot of people come in and affect my life when I was a young person and became role models
01:28for me. And I would love the opportunity if we could all become role models for our young
01:34Australians. The most rewarding thing I can see is when we initially have a very quiet, reserved
01:41young person who joined St John Ambulance within the youth program. They develop the confidence
01:46and the skills, they master first aid, they develop these leadership skills and they find
01:52their own voice and their own identity. Seeing them grow and develop as a young person and contribute,
01:58that is what I'm most passionate and I get the most sense of reward and joy out of.
