00:00Okay, let's turn this up to 11.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're dissecting the ending of 28 Years Later, The Bone Temple.
00:10Let's sink our teeth into some spoilers.
00:12The whole world will cease to make any sense.
00:18Dr. Ian Kelson is the inversion of a devil in disguise.
00:21From the iodine that gives him an orange complexion to the temple of bones he's constructed as a tribute to the dead,
00:27it's understandable why Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal mistakes him for Old Nick, a.k.a. Satan.
00:32Old Nick released his demons onto the world of man.
00:39And the world of man fell before the demons.
00:42Whereas Jimmy represents the cruelty and chaos associated with the devil,
00:46Kelson provides peace, love, and mercy against the bleakest of backdrops.
00:51The foundations.
00:52They seemed unshakable.
00:58Kelson also brings death, putting Isla out of her misery in the previous film.
01:02The doctor called me better, but he can't help me.
01:06I don't understand.
01:08I do.
01:08Yet you could argue that Kelson spared Isla a far more painful demise,
01:13be it from the infected or her terminal illness.
01:15Although grieving his mother, Spike sees this as compassion.
01:19He thus shows Kelson gratitude, saving him from the alpha Samson.
01:29In the Bone Temple, it's Kelson who saves Spike's life during the final act.
01:34To make Jimmy go away, Kelson pretends to be Old Nick.
01:37This entails proclaiming Jimmy as the son of Satan,
01:40allowing him to regain control over his followers.
01:43Are you ready?
01:44Kelson knows that this is wrong, but he goes along with the ruse
01:49until realizing that Spike has been roped into the cult.
01:52What's your name?
01:53Spike.
01:54No, no, I think your name is Jimmy.
02:00In an attempt to spare Spike, Kelson says that Jimmy must be sacrificed.
02:05One of Jimmy's followers, whose real name is Kelly, is eager to comply,
02:09having grown disenchanted by her leader.
02:11However, Jimmy acts quicker, stabbing Kelson to prove he isn't really the devil.
02:16I believe the infection can be treated.
02:18Amid the anarchy, Spike stabs Jimmy, freeing himself and Kelly.
02:22This is Kelson's end, however.
02:25I remember details, events, and people.
02:28Kelson dies so Spike can live.
02:31Although the film avoids turning him into a Christ-like figure.
02:34I haven't feared my life ending for many years.
02:36Jimmy does wind up on a cross, albeit an inverted one.
02:40While much about Jimmy's past is left ambiguous,
02:43we know that his cult is rooted in two things.
02:45The cross his father gave him before surrendering to the infected,
02:48and Jimmy Saville, who many would describe as a real-life devil in disguise.
02:53Do as much as you come for yourself, that's the name of the game.
02:55Ironically, the rage virus broke out in 2002,
02:58but Saville's reported history of abuse didn't become common knowledge
03:01until after he died in 2011.
03:04Considering that Jimmy has presumably been cut off from society for 28 years,
03:08he might not be aware of the controversy.
03:11So, a sadist inadvertently modeled himself after an alleged abuser.
03:15Would you mind if we stepped in?
03:17After Spike and Kelly depart the Bone Temple, Samson returns.
03:21Kelson develops an unexpected rapport with the Alpha throughout the film.
03:28Using a concoction mainly consisting of morphine,
03:31Kelson calmed the rage-filled Samson, bringing out his humanity.
03:34It isn't the first time we've seen a different side of Samson.
03:38In the last film, Samson seemed to have a genuine reaction to the deceased infected mother.
03:50It suggested that maybe there's still a conscious human behind the rage,
03:54especially now that the infected are evolving.
03:57Kelson allows Samson to reconnect with his previous life,
04:00although there isn't a cure per se.
04:02While the other infected attack Samson on the train,
04:05he isn't affected, meaning he still has the virus.
04:09It's just under control, but only temporarily.
04:12What do they see?
04:13Kelson told Samson that the drug would eventually wear off.
04:17He offered Samson a peaceful death, but the Alpha chose to keep going.
04:20Look at the incredible changes.
04:23When Samson returns, Jimmy mistakes him for Satan,
04:26still believing that the devil is his dad.
04:28Samson feels like he's lost a father in Kelson,
04:31who essentially brought him back to life.
04:33As Samson walks away with Kelson in his arms,
04:36Jimmy echoes the same question he asked
04:38when his father gave himself to the infected 28 years earlier.
04:44Jimmy is abandoned again,
04:47although he isn't alone much longer.
04:49Samson resurfaces, back in rage mode.
04:52This likely means that the drug's effects depleted,
04:55but perhaps Jimmy's death isn't senseless killing.
04:58It's intentional revenge,
05:00implying that the virus hasn't completely erased Samson's individuality.
05:05Speaking of parents and children,
05:07we then cut to Killian Murphy's gym and his teenage daughter.
05:11Murphy's character hasn't been seen since the original 28 Days Later.
05:15You looked all right in this, you know?
05:18It's coming!
05:19That film ended on a cautiously hopeful note.
05:24Jim survived along with Naomi Harris' Selena and Megan Burns' Hannah.
05:28They found refuge in a Cumbria cottage
05:30as the starving infected started to collapse.
05:33As a jet flew by,
05:34it was implied that the trio might be saved,
05:37although this was left ambiguous until now.
05:45While we know that the virus was eradicated throughout Europe,
05:48the British Isles have been under quarantine this whole time.
05:51Whether or not the pilot saw the hello sign at the end of the first film,
05:55rescue wasn't an option.
05:57Do you think he saw us this time?
05:59Life nonetheless went on for Jim,
06:01settling down and becoming a father.
06:03We're gonna do it, okay?
06:04What happened to Selena and Hannah remains unclear.
06:08Selena is presumably the girl's mother,
06:10but is Jim raising her alone?
06:12Thinking optimistically,
06:14maybe Selena and Hannah are just out looking for supplies.
06:17For all we know, though,
06:18both could have died since we last saw them,
06:20leaving Jim and his daughter alone.
06:22They're dead.
06:25And you're gonna be next.
06:26Either way,
06:27Jim seems content with his daughter,
06:29giving her a lesson on why it's important to remember the past,
06:32or else you may be doomed to repeat history.
06:35Ironically,
06:36we've now gotten back-to-back sequels
06:38that have largely ignored 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.
06:42This final scene suggests that the next film,
06:45which is in development,
06:46will return to the franchise's roots.
06:51Sorry.
06:54It's okay.
06:55That doesn't mean the events of the past two films will be ignored.
06:58As Jim and his daughter look outside,
07:00they spot Spike and Kelly caught in the middle of rampaging infected on the horizon.
07:05We may have diseases.
07:06While Jim initially hesitates,
07:09he ultimately agrees with his daughter that they need to help these strangers.
07:12So,
07:13Spike may go from being tormented by a man named Jimmy
07:16to finding salvation with a man named Jim.
07:22Although helping Spike and Kelly is the right thing to do,
07:25getting involved could put Jim and his daughter at risk.
07:28Jim, in particular,
07:29could meet a grim fate in the sequel,
07:30especially since some fans feel he never should have survived in the first place.
07:34I got a headache.
07:35Bad?
07:37Yeah, it's pretty bad.
07:38Well, why didn't you say something to school?
07:39Well, because they didn't think they'd give a shit.
07:42There were multiple alternate endings to 28 Days Later,
07:45with Jim dying in each of them.
07:47Selena!
07:49Find movie!
07:50While the filmmakers went with the happiest ending,
07:53there was much discourse over whether they chose the right one.
07:56This even led to one alternate ending being included in a U.S. release as a what if.
08:01Oh, come on.
08:03You need someone.
08:04No, I want to eat.
08:05Oh, come on.
08:07Breathe!
08:07The ending where Jim survives is officially canon,
08:10but the next film could kill the character off.
08:13Or perhaps history will repeat itself with Jim surviving again.
08:16In any case,
08:17there's bound to be more online debate over whether Jim's journey ends.
08:21It's just one of several unanswered questions we have walking away from 28 years later,
08:26The Bone Temple.
08:26But obviously, we're going to kill you first.

08:46Spike allowed a pregnant woman to escape from Jimmy's gang,
08:49although she rejected his pleas to take him with her.
08:51Will we see this woman again?
08:53Trying to predict the future.
08:55Is it a discouraging and hazardous occupation?
08:59For that matter,
08:59will Spike ever reunite with his father Jamie,
09:02who doesn't appear in this film?
09:03The last time we saw Jamie,
09:05Spike left an infant at the village,
09:07naming her Isla.
09:08Please be kind to her.
09:12Her name is Isla.
09:14The fact that the infected can have babies that aren't infected
09:17is another can of worms that the Bone Temple doesn't open.
09:20What could that mean for the British mainland
09:22as well as the rest of the world?
09:23The next film,
09:24which Danny Boyle will return to direct
09:26with a script from Alex Garland,
09:28could answer all of the above
09:29while bringing this six-part series full circle.
09:32Hopefully, we won't have to wait long.
09:34Although, if it comes out in 2030,
09:36it'll have literally been 28 years later.
09:38What did you think of 28 years later,
09:46The Bone Temple?
