A South Korean court on Friday sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison on charges that included obstructing authorities’ attempts to arrest him following his failed bid to impose martial law in December 2024.

The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of mobilising the presidential security service to prevent authorities from executing an arrest warrant issued as part of an investigation into his martial law declaration.

00:25for martial law. This is the first ruling related to the criminal charges he faces over the botched
00:30declaration. Yoon faced up to 10 years in prison for obstruction after barricading himself in his
00:37residence in January last year and ordered the Security Service to block investigators. He was
00:42arrested on a second attempt involving more than 3,000 police officers, marking the first arrest of
00:48a sitting president in South Korea. Parliament, including some of Yoon's conservative allies,
00:54quickly overturned his martial law decree and later impeached him. He was removed from office
00:59in April last year after the Constitutional Court ruled he had violated his official duties.
