00:00Leeds Rhinos forward James McDonnell, a member of last season's Betfred Super League Dream Team,
00:07is set to pursue a move to NRL next season, joining England centre Harry Newman in the
00:13Southern Hemisphere. Newman signed a two-year deal with Perth Bears, a new Australian franchise,
00:19starting when his Leeds contract expires this autumn, and McDonnell is expected to link up
00:24with him when the Western Australia club enter the NRL in 2027. Rhinos have also begun planning
00:32for McDonnell's departure, with sporting director Ian Bleece recently returning from a recruitment
00:37trip to Australia. The 25-year-old's exit could open opportunities for homegrown forwards such as
00:42Ben Littlewood and Zach Lloyd, while also giving Leeds time to identify potential reinforcements.
00:50Rhinos coach Brad Arthur acknowledged the challenge of losing McDonnell, but emphasised
00:54the message for younger players. James is a great example of where hard work and dedication can
00:59take you. For those in the squad, they know there is a spot up for grabs next year, and that could
01:05drive them on. Please add it, James has tremendous self-belief and drive. We are grateful he has been
01:12up front early, allowing us to plan for 2027. He has an outstanding season ahead this year before
01:18moving on. McDonnell and Newman will become the third and fourth ex-leads players in the NRL
01:24showing just how much talent they boast in Yorkshire.
