Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone on Monday apologised for his behaviour at the Spanish Supercup semi-final after a video of him 'taunting' Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior went viral.

"Well, first, I would like to apologise to Mr Florentino and also to Mr Vinicius for, obviously, the incident that you saw," the manager told reporters during a press conference in Madrid.

"Obviously, it was not right of me to put myself in that position, and I accept that, obviously, I was not right," he continued.

Simeone stressed that his statement was 'an apology, not [asking for] forgiveness,' and declined to elaborate further.

Footage from the match appeared to show Simeone taunting Vinicius, allegedly saying, "Florentino is going to get rid of you" - a remark linked to ongoing speculation over the Brazilian winger's contract and future at Real Madrid.

The incident, which drew widespread media attention, sparked debates over Simeone's sportsmanship and conduct on the sidelines.

Real Madrid went on to the final following their 2-1 victory against Atletico, where they were later beaten 3-2 by arch-rivals FC Barcelona, with Vinicius scoring a spectacular first-half goal in the match.

Simeone praised Barca's win, describing them as "in very good form, with great players, a manager who has very clear ideas [and] a team that is pursuing a very good style of play".

Atletico Madrid are currently fourth in La Liga, 11 points behind leaders Barcelona.
