As pubs across the West Midlands face rising costs, staff shortages and closures, one Birmingham venue is standing out by doing things very differently. The Good Intent, based in the Great Western Arcade, operates as the UK’s first not-for-profit pub, donating every penny it makes to local charities, community projects and good causes across the city.

00:00hey it's lovely to see you today now we've just finished the christmas and new year period and
00:07they are quite trying times for pubs how was the festive season for you here at the good intent
00:12yes i think we had a really successful december and november um it's it's always difficult for
00:19us being in the arcade but once the christmas lights are up and the general markets go in it
00:23it really helps us so we get a lot of footfall because of it now your pub is a little bit
00:27different in that it's quite focused on community and charity why is it so important for you to
00:33factor this into your business model for me personally um pubs are always built around a
00:37community growing up they are in sort of villages and things like that um pubs where everyone goes
00:43to so i've tried to sort of create that atmosphere within the city center and having a non-for-profit
00:49pub that gives its money to charity it's profit to charity um it kind of brings that sense of
00:54community and it feels like people are making a difference when they when they buy a drink
00:57now running a pub in general can be quite challenging everyone knows how the struggles
01:02for pubs and bars at the minute um obviously tax going up alcohol tax um breweries uh putting the
01:09costs up insurance rates and everything's up and everything's against us uh so it was a bit of a
01:14challenging year and we've seen in birmingham especially a few pubs have closed down
01:17us but again with a different model um we're trying to try to do it differently so by putting
01:23that back on the community it kind of it helps us and we have obviously we're still we're still go
01:29we're still still running so that's the first hurdle out of the way um and i think going into
01:342026 we have to find new new ways and new initiatives uh within charities and stuff um to
01:40to do that you're based in the city center and pubs are often known for having regular customers have
01:46you managed to tap into that we rely heavily on office office-based customs so lunch times and the peak
01:52times just after office hours are really big for us and i personally try and remember as many faces
01:57many names as many drinks as i can um i think that's really important um not only personally
02:02but i think customers enjoy that as well and in general for the pub industry what do you think of
02:09the challenges for 2026 surviving um i think that's always the the first the first struggle um i think
02:16once we get over that sort of that hurdle and like i say we have a few things planned with
02:22charities uh me and my assistant manager planning a skydive for charity um and we're trying to look
02:28at different charities to work with to give money away each month we can say if you're booking upstairs
02:32we can put that money that you spend here back to your charity that you're working with which is
02:36again it's another idea that we're trying to push that's lovely hey it's been lovely talking to you
02:41thank you very much thanks for coming well this unique venture the uk's first not-for-profit pub
02:47has already donated to a number of charities including birmingham hospice love brum and thrive
02:53for birmingham further community initiatives are planned by the venue for the year ahead
