00:33Do you remember when New York City quite literally looked like the Las Vegas scene from Blade Runner 2049?
00:39Yeah, that was fun.
00:40In June 2023, massive Canadian wildfires sent plumes of smoke drifting south into New York, blotting out the sun and turning the skyline a toxic, apocalyptic orange.
00:51This is not the day to train for a marathon or to do an outside event with your children.
00:57But this wasn't just a cool Roger Deakins filter.
01:00The air quality hit hazardous levels, making the city and its buildings smell like burning plastic and campfires.
01:07It was not only a terrifying visual that made for some spectacular photos, but it was also a total horror movie scenario.
01:14People were walking to work in N95 masks, and the world around them looked like Mars.
01:19A silent, suffocating reminder that the apocalypse might not be a bang, but a slow, hazy Tuesday morning commute.

01:35August 4th, 2020 gave us some of the most terrifying footage ever recorded.
01:40When 2,750 tons of improperly stored ammonium nitrate detonated in Beirut, the result was a blast that looked like a tactical nuke.
01:51High-definition cameras captured a white spherical condensation cloud pulverizing the city in real time.
01:57We don't know what's scarier, the visual of a massive explosion, or the pure bureaucratic negligence on display.

02:13The sheer physics of it all, glass shattering miles away, and the sound reaching as far as Cyprus, reminds us how fragile our cities actually are.

03:09The Biden administration is considering vaccinations for chickens as an option to address concerns about a bird flu pandemic.
03:17Cats on dairy farms suffered fatal neurological damage, going blind and walking in circles, while infected humans presented with severe blood-red conjunctivitis, literally bleeding into the whites of their eyes.

03:32This signals a virus that is actively learning and adapting, and it has one creepy symptom to show for it.
03:38Watching a pathogen cross the species barrier to cause such visceral symptoms in mammals is a stark reminder that nature has plenty of weapons left in its arsenal.
03:47But what makes this a little bit different, as I understand it, is typically this is a virus that can infect the respiratory systems of birds, but it doesn't often hop over to mammals.
03:58But it looks like this version of it has been able to do that, and we happen to be mammals.

04:23You panic, only to find out your child is actually upstairs, safe in bed.
04:28No, this isn't an episode of Black Mirror. It's the new reality of AI voice cloning.
04:33My love, it is me wit. Please, please listen carefully. I have been abducted and I'm being held in a basement, tied up in the dark.
04:40Please follow their instructions. Do not notify the authorities.
04:44Scammers are now scraping audio from social media to create perfect replicas of your loved one's voices.
04:50This is just pure psychological terror. It not only weaponizes your own love and empathy against you, but it destroys your very trust in reality.
04:59We can no longer believe our own ears, and it's quite disheartening to hear that your family's digital footprint can now be used to torment you.
05:05It's a violation of the most personal kind.
05:08And it's my daughter's voice crying and sobbing, saying, Mom. And I'm like, OK, what happened? She's like, Mom, these bad men have me. Help me, help me.
05:18The Itaewon crowd crush.
05:20And I had to like turn around and I told the crowd, you can't come this way. People are dying.
05:27Halloween in Seoul turned into a tragedy that redefined our understanding of crowd management.
05:33When 100,000 revelers packed into a narrow alley, the density became so high that people literally couldn't breathe.
05:40But this wasn't a stampede with people running and trampling on each other. It was called a progressive crowd collapse.
05:46And you can see this is where a lot of people were receiving CPR. You saw lines of bodies down the streets.
05:51And what's really, really striking to me is, you know, you see that bag there with a shoe.
05:57And, you know, you see people's Halloween costumes.
05:59Victims died standing up, desperately gasping for breath, their rib cages compressed by a sea of strangers.
06:05And there's an eerie juxtaposition at play.
06:08While people were silently suffocating to death, others were happily dancing to the blasting pop music,
06:13completely unaware that the person three feet away was now a standing corpse,
06:18helplessly dying in a sea of bodies while people dance around you, sounds almost biblical.
06:23And it's definitely not how we want to go.
06:26And of course, those shoes and the pieces of people's Halloween costumes just sitting in trash bags.
06:32Guarantee you, a lot of the pieces of costumes there come from people who didn't make it out alive.
06:38The Surfside condo collapse.
06:40We had a 12-story, 136-unit apartment complex that had sustained a partial collapse.
06:48On June 24th, 2021, a grainy security camera captured one of the most chilling sequences of the decade.
06:55The Champlain Tower South in Florida simply letting go.
06:59In just 12 seconds, a 12-story building collapsed and pancaked into a pile of rubble, taking 98 lives with it.
07:06The visual is frightening, not only on a pure visceral level, but also for what it represents, violating the sanctuary of a home.
07:13We do know the lead investigator, Judith Mitrani-Riser, says that this tragic event has revealed flaws in our systems and quality is at the heart of it.
07:22So all of this work is to make sure that a tragedy like this never happens again.
07:26These victims weren't daredevils or soldiers.
07:28They were retired couples and families, peacefully asleep in their beds.
07:32One second, they're living their lives, and the next, the entire building is collapsing around them.
07:37A few seconds after that, they're dead.
07:39It reveals a terrifying reality where you can follow all the rules, yet still fall victim to a tragedy caused by invisible rot that started decades ago.

08:08In May 2024, a limestone mountain in Papua New Guinea didn't just slide, it collapsed, burying a nearby village under 26 feet of rock and debris.

08:20In an earthquake, rubble creates air pockets where survivors can hold out for days.
08:24But this was a landslide, a fluid mass of earth that fills every void.
08:28So the 2,000-plus victims didn't have days, they had minutes.
08:32More than 2,000 feared buried alive in the middle of the night.
08:36As they slept, their communities were plunged into a nightmare.
08:40A giant landslide, burying houses in six villages.
08:45There was no monster to fight, just simple physics and some horrific luck.
08:50Being forced to stand on top of a mountain of debris, knowing your entire community is just beneath your feet but completely unreachable, is a level of psychological torment no screenwriter would dare put in a script.
09:02I have 18 of my family members buried underneath the debris and soil that I'm standing on, and a lot more family members in the village I cannot count.
09:10The Titan submersible implosion.
09:12But we begin our report with hope on Wednesday that banging sounds detected in the North Atlantic might be coming from the five-passenger Titan submersible.
09:23The world spent days utterly captivated by the search for the Titan sub, imagining the crew slowly running out of oxygen in the deep dark of the ocean.
09:31It's a chilling thing to imagine, but the reality was somehow even more disturbing.
09:36We later learned that the vessel suffered a catastrophic implosion and collapsed in less than 20 milliseconds.
09:42New evidence has been obtained by the U.S. Coast Guard investigating the Titan submersible disaster in June 2023.
09:48It captures the sound at the very moment the vessel imploded, 1,000 metres below the surface.
09:54For context, the human brain takes about 13 milliseconds to process visual information.
10:00This means the crew ceased to exist before their nerve impulses could even register that the hole had cracked.
10:06It is the ultimate existential horror, total deletion.
10:09There was no pain, no fear, and no realisation of death.
10:13One millisecond they were there, and the next, they were vapour.
10:16There's something about that that really forces us to confront the fragility of consciousness.
10:21Is that right?
10:22The noise is a sound of Titan imploding.
10:26Microplastics in the brain.
10:27Over the years, microplastics, a word you probably started to hear more,
10:31they've been found in almost every organ in the body, as well as in the bloodstream.
10:35But now, for what seems to be the first time, these microscopic pollutants have been found in tissue in the human brain.
10:41And here we come to a discovery that fundamentally changes what it means to be human.
10:46In 2024, scientists made the stomach-churning discovery that microplastics are migrating from our blood into our brains at an alarming rate.
10:55A study from the University of New Mexico found that in some dementia patients,
10:59plastic made up 0.5% of the brain's entire weight.
11:03Not to be dramatic, but you can't escape this.
11:06You are becoming synthetic.
11:08They looked at some individuals with dementia.
11:10They had higher levels of microplastics in the brain.
11:13And get this, when they looked at the average brain,
11:15the amount of microplastics in the brain was equivalent to the weight of a plastic spoon.
11:20Nanoplastics have breached the blood-brain barrier,
11:23the shield meant to protect your most vital organ,
11:25and potentially lodging in tissue and increasing inflammation.
11:28This is like something out of a body horror movie,
11:31only this time, the parasite isn't an alien, it's our own garbage.
11:35So as we've seen the rise in plastics over the last 30 years,
11:38we really have not understood the effects of these microplastics or the chemicals inside them,
11:43which is a whole other topic in the human body.

13:06And when you're going to somebody's house, do the same things, whether it's a relative,
13:10whether it's a loved one or a friend.
13:11If it's somebody who has not been actively living under your roof for the past couple of weeks,
13:16treat them like you would treat strangers.
13:17Social distance.
13:18Make sure you're wearing masks indoors.
13:20Ventilate if you can.
