00:00I'm in Deerall, about 45 minutes south of Cairns, Mel, and it is soggy, and not as wet
00:10as it has been here.
00:11In fact, Cairns and Surrounds kind of got away with it over the last 24 hours, only
00:15double digits in the gauges, still 50 millimeters plus, but just a little bit further south
00:21from here, South Mission Beach, again in the last 24 hours, copying 300 millimeters, well,
00:27more than that.
00:28Makes it two days in a row now, 660-odd millimeters for the town over the last 48 hours.
00:35That's led to flash flooding.
00:36There were several road closures through the region here in the northeast of Queensland,
00:41and we've seen those rainfall rates, 200 millimeters in as little as six hours.
00:46Similar rainfall rates too, further inland, there's another warning area in the northwest
00:51of Queensland.
00:52It's drifted a little bit further east over the last 24 hours, but including places like
00:56Julia Creek, where we've also seen hundreds of millimeters of rain.
01:00There is some relatively good news.
01:02This has been a multi-day event, but even as I speak and the rain starts to get a bit
01:07heavier, the Bureau of Meteorology this morning, we spoke with Miriam Bradbury, she said that
01:13we should be on the tail end of these flooding rains.
01:16The monsoon low that's sitting over northwestern Queensland that's driving a lot of this heavy
01:21rainfall, that is supposed to gradually weaken off in the next 24 to 48 hours.
01:26We will still see widespread rain continuing through the middle and later part of the week,
01:30but the intensity of those top rainfall totals should hopefully start to come down somewhat.
01:36Although that's going to be cold comfort for those dealing with, well, the roads cut off
01:41that are still trying to get home from their Christmas holidays, of course, this time of
01:45year that people want to be out and about, and this rain is not allowing it.
01:51Mel, but good news, we should be done with this relatively soon.
01:56We'll see you next time.
