00:00A massive winter storm system is sweeping across the country,
00:29prompting winter storm warnings in six states as millions prepare for heavy snow,
00:35dangerous winds and rapidly deteriorating road conditions.
00:40The National Weather Service says the system will intensify between Sunday, December 7th and Monday, December 8th,
00:49bringing everything from light flurries in the Midwest to over a foot of snow in Alaska.
00:55In the central United States, the NWS office in La Crosse, Wisconsin, reports snow pushing from west to east overnight,
01:04with the heaviest bands settling over Clayton and Grant counties.
01:09Meanwhile, in Iowa, winter storm warnings stretch into the early morning hours.
01:15Counties including Floyd, Chickasaw and Fayette remain under alert until 3 a.m. central,
01:22as heavy snowfall makes roads slick and visibility poor.
01:28Cities across central Iowa, Dysart, Iowa Falls and Gladbrook are also under warnings until 6 a.m.
01:36The Quad Cities Weather Office is calling travel very difficult, especially across northeast Iowa and portions of Illinois.
01:46In Carroll and Whiteside counties, drivers are being warned of slippery roadways as the snow continues to fall steadily through the night.
01:55Further west, winter weather is pounding the Colorado mountains.
01:59The elkhead and park rangers may see up to 3 inches of snow, but it's the wind gusting up to 35 mph that is making travel very difficult to impossible through early Sunday.
02:14But the heaviest snowfall in the nation is being seen far to the north.
02:19Alaska is bracing for the most severe impact of the storm system.
02:23Cities like Elfin Cove and Pelican are expected to receive between 8 and 12 inches of snow.
02:31Other areas, including Kake and Port Alexander, could see up to 5 inches, along with winds topping 40 mph.
02:41Forecasters say a major pattern shift is ushering in colder temperatures and strong outflow winds across southeast Alaska.
02:49Combined with deep moisture pumping into the region, the system is laying down heavy and persistent snow, especially through the icy strait corridor.
03:01Another strong band of precipitation is expected early Sunday, adding to already hazardous conditions.
03:09The storm isn't sparing the mountain west either.
03:12In Wyoming, snowfall could reach 10 inches across the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, while parts of Michigan, including central and western Chippewa counties, may see 6 inches by Sunday evening.
03:28Even states farther south aren't escaping the winter blast.
03:31Parts of South Carolina and Virginia could receive up to 5 inches as the storm sweeps east, spreading wintry weather into regions that rarely see significant snowfall this early in the season.
03:45This week, the National Weather Service has issued several additional alerts across the Midwest, the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic,
03:54warning of potential record-breaking cold and urging residents to dress properly, limit outdoor exposure and prepare for a rapidly changing weather conditions.
04:05As this powerful winter system continues its march across the country, officials are urging everyone in affected areas to stay informed, stay off the roads if possible,
