00:00Running her own salon is no longer working for hairdresser Lisa Seeger.
00:07It's taking its toll physically and financially.
00:10If I can't get a better paying job, because I'm a sole income single parent paying a mortgage on my own,
00:18I'm looking at probably having to sell my house.
00:21I think that's like a bit more interesting than just something like this, but I also just want something that's super simple.
00:26Lisa's been searching for work in sales, customer service and local government.
00:31Some hair out with a curl on both sides.
00:35But she's faced a series of rejections.
00:38It's been really disheartening and disappointing.
00:41I'm really questioning my worth because I thought that I had a lot to offer
00:45and I thought that I'd have transferable skills from running my own business.
00:49The ability to change jobs is key to career and pay progression.
00:54Often a business will increment your wage, but you can get bigger wage jumps when you switch roles
01:00or you can move into a higher position at a different business.
01:05But the job mobility rate has been falling over the past three years, from 9.5% to 7.7%.
01:13And while still low, the unemployment rate of 4.3% has been on an upward trajectory for the past three years.
01:22The number of jobs being advertised has also fallen over the past year.
01:25So it's just generally a bit of a harder time to find a new job.
01:29While there are skill shortages in some sectors, for others the jobs market is getting tighter.
01:35And there are concerns artificial intelligence could lead to further disruption, particularly for white collar workers.
01:43There are calls for the federal government to prepare now.
01:46Is there a case for unemployment insurance?
01:49If lots of people are out of work, there could be a case for loosening the rules around early access to super.
01:54And while the job market of the future may be uncertain, Lisa Seger is determined to show her daughter that a career change is possible.
02:03I'm going to continue to be resilient and try to find a better job that pays better money that I can provide for her and keep a roof over our heads for the future.
