Brazil: Fire broke out in one of the pavilions at COP30

A fire broke out on Thursday in one of the pavilions hosting the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in the Brazilian city of Belém do Pará. The fire started at 2:30 p.m. local time in the Blue Zone, administered by the U.N. Security personnel cordoned off the area and evacuated dozens of people. The governor of Pará and Brazil's minister of tourism reported that firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and there were no injuries. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started in the Indian pavilion, but the causes and origin are unknown. The fire occurred on a key day for breaking the deadlock in negotiations on climate adaptation and roadmaps for phasing out fossil fuels.
