Russia’s strategy in Latin America is starting to look a lot like Washington’s playbook in Eastern Europe. In this APT Opinion, we break down how Moscow’s growing military presence in Venezuela mirrors the U.S. campaign in Ukraine — from weapons and advisors to proxy alliances and geopolitical leverage.

Is Putin now doing to the United States what the U.S. did to Russia? Are we watching a new Cold War 2.0 unfold — this time in America’s backyard?

00:00Good evening, everyone. You're watching APT Opinion, where we cut through the propaganda to decode the world's biggest geopolitical plays.
00:09Before we dive in, make sure to subscribe to APT News, because if you want to understand the story behind the story, you'll want to be here.
00:18Now, let me throw a thought at you.
00:21Is Russia doing to the United States via Venezuela what the US did to Russia via Ukraine?
00:28Sounds bold? Maybe even provocative?
00:32If you think I'm reaching a bit too far, drop a comment.
00:36But first, hear me out, because beneath the headlines and the hashtags, that comparison might not be as far-fetched as it sounds.
00:58Think about it. What's been happening in front of our eyes over the past decade?
01:17The United States has been pouring tens of billions of dollars into Ukraine.
01:23Weapons, training, intelligence, logistics, even political backing.
01:29All of it, in Washington's words, to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression.
01:35But in reality, it was also about containing Russia in its own backyard, pressing against its borders and shrinking Moscow's strategic depth.
01:45Now, fast forward to 2025.
01:48The roles are shifting.
01:50Russia is quietly playing a similar game, right here, in America's backyard.
01:56The stage? Venezuela.
01:58The player? Vladimir Putin.
02:00And the script? Very, very familiar.
02:04Both superpowers are doing the same thing, just in reverse geographies.
02:08The US used Ukraine to pressure Russia near its borders.
02:12Now, Russia is using Venezuela to project power, just miles from the US coastline.
02:18Do you want to know the numbers?
02:20The US and NATO pumped over $50 billion into Ukraine, arming it with missiles, tanks, intel.
02:27Russia has provided more than $4 billion worth of weapons, advisors and Wagner Group operatives to Venezuela.
02:35Both claim it's about security.
02:37But, we can be honest here, it's really about strategic leverage, isn't it?
02:43Like Ukraine, Venezuela is becoming a pawn in a far bigger chess game.
02:49One where neither of the two main players can afford to lose.
02:53And here's where it gets interesting.
02:56The Maduro government has reportedly requested Russian missiles, radars and aircraft as US forces mass near the Caribbean.
03:03In response, Russia has sent a military transport plane, along with Wagner personnel, straight to Caracas.
03:11That's hardly subtle diplomacy.
03:13That's a deliberate signal to Washington.
03:16It says, we can play in your hemisphere too.
03:19And it's not even the first time.
03:22Remember those Russian nuclear-capable bombers that landed in Venezuela a few years ago?
03:27Or the reports about possible Russian military bases near the Caribbean?
03:31All of it mirrors exactly what NATO did near Russia's borders.
03:36One military build-up answered with another.
03:40Let's call this what it is.
03:42Geopolitical tit for tat.
03:44Now, the United States uses Ukraine, Poland, the Baltics to pressure Russia.
03:50Russia now uses Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua to pressure the US.
03:55Both sides are poking each other where it stings the most, in their spheres of influence.
04:00And both are justifying it the same way.
04:04The US says it's protecting democracy.
04:07Russia says it's supporting sovereignty.
04:10But stop.
04:11Strip away the rhetoric.
04:13And it's all about power projection, deterrence and the illusion of moral high ground.
04:20Now, zoom out for a second.
04:21When it's the US and Russia, there's always a bigger picture.
04:25These moves aren't isolated.
04:26They're reshaping the global order.
04:29The West has spent years isolating Russia, cutting it off from SWIFT, the G8 and the European market.
04:35And Russia's counter?
04:37To build a new network, a parallel world order, stretching across Latin America, Africa and Asia.
04:44And in that new map, Venezuela isn't just a troubled state.
04:48It's a strategic outpost.
04:51Moscow's message is crystal clear.
04:53If you can fight us in Kiev, we can challenge you in Caracas.
04:58This is reciprocal geopolitics.
05:00Pressure traded for pressure.
05:02Frontlines traded for frontlines.
05:05So, where is all this going?
05:08Let's lay out the facts one after the other.
05:10Because when you look at the data, the pattern becomes impossible to ignore.
05:14In Ukraine, the United States and NATO poured more than $50 billion into weapons, training and intelligence support.
05:21All right on Russia's doorstep.
05:23Now, flip the map.
05:24In Venezuela, Russia has funneled over $4 billion worth of weapons,
05:29Wagner Group mercenaries and military advisors.
05:32This time, right near the US border.
05:35In Ukraine, Kiev asked for Western weapons and closer integration with the West.
05:40In Caracas, the Maduro government is now requesting Russian missiles, radars and aircraft.
05:46Strategically, Ukraine sits along Russia's border and the Black Sea.
05:51Remember, that's a constant pressure point.
05:54And Venezuela?
05:55Venezuela lies at the gateway to the Caribbean.
05:58And yes, it's not far from the Panama Canal.
06:00Equally symbolic.
06:02Equally provocative.
06:03And just as Russia was cut off from the G8 and SWIFT after its Ukraine campaign,
06:09Washington is now facing its own diplomatic friction as Russia plants deeper roots in Latin America.
06:16So when you line it all up, you can see it clearly.
06:19This isn't coincidence.
06:21It's symmetry.
06:22One superpower mirroring the other's strategy.
06:26Move for move, border for border.
06:29I'm just going to say it.
06:30We've entered a new Cold War.
06:32The tools have been modernized.
06:34Hybrid warfare, cyber tactics.
06:36But the proxy alliances and the strategic encirclement are stark giveaways.
06:41Both powers are now waging psychological and political warfare through their proxies.
06:46For Russia, the priorities aren't Venezuela's oil or trade.
06:49It's about psychological symmetry.
06:51It's about saying,
06:53You surrounded us in Eastern Europe.
06:55We're surrounding you in the Western Hemisphere.
06:57That's not just rhetoric.
06:59That's real politic.
07:00Revenge diplomacy with missiles attached.
07:04So yes, when I say Russia is doing to the US via Venezuela what the US did to Russia via Ukraine,
07:11it may not sound believable immediately.
07:13But if you think about it, if you look at the flow of weapons, money and manpower,
07:18it's a strategic reality unfolding right now.
07:21Both superpowers are using the same playbook, just swapping names and coordinates.
07:27Ukraine and Venezuela are now twin symbols of a world divided again,
07:32where every move is a message and every ally is actually a potential battlefield.

07:53Because understanding geopolitics today isn't about picking sides,
07:57it's about seeing the patterns.
07:58patterns.
07:59And here at APT, that's exactly what we do.
