00:00Newcastle United continued their defence of their Carabao Cup crown in style at St James's Park
00:07with a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory over a strong Tottenham Hotspur side
00:12thanks to two headed goals, first from Fabian Scher and then Nick Valtemada early in the second half.
00:19Newcastle had made eight changes from their win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday
00:24and yet they still looked just as capable of defeating a Spurs side who had several usual first team starters in their 11.
00:31The Magpies were certainly good value for their lead at half time
00:35although their opponents did have moments of their own making it an enjoyable encounter.
00:39The second half followed a largely similar pattern with Newcastle starting quickly before adding that all important second goal.
00:47Again Spurs had half chances where they threatened to force their way back into the game
00:52but ultimately Newcastle, despite all of their changes, finished the game in style
00:57and saw off their opponents to reach yet another Carabao Cup quarter-final, their fourth in successive seasons.
01:04Let's go back through the match here at St James's Park to see how Newcastle made it into the last eight of the League Cup once again.
01:13It was all smiles on the touchline ahead of kick-off between Eddie Howe and Thomas Frank
01:18but for Howe and his Newcastle side, they were in no mood to give up their Carabao Cup trophy without a fight
01:26and they sprung out of the traps to take the lead against Tottenham 24 minutes in.
01:31Fabian Scher with the header from a Sandro Tonali corner.
01:35Scher has been ousted from his usual centre-back starting place for Newcastle in recent weeks
01:41but he marked his return to the starting 11 with that goal.
01:45As the first half went on, Spurs steadily grew into the match
01:50but Newcastle resisted their pressure well
01:52and early in the second period, the Magpies put the game to bed.
01:56Nick Valtemada heading home from a Joe Willock cross.
02:00Attacking changes were then made by Thomas Frank
02:03but ultimately it was to no avail and it was Newcastle who progressed.
02:08We enjoy the competition, we take it seriously, we want to do well
02:12but it's down to the players really and how they take the pitch.
02:17I thought they made a number of changes.
02:20There's always a slight doubt about how that team will knit together,
02:22how cohesive will it be but from minute one I thought we looked in a really good place.
02:27Athletically I thought we were excellent today
02:28and a lot of those players haven't played regularly
02:30so that's a testament to their professionalism,
02:33how they look after themselves in between games and they got their rewards.
02:37When you make the changes that we did, I still felt it was a really strong team
02:41for getting the bench.
02:43The team with the changes for me was, otherwise I wouldn't have picked it,
02:47I felt was strong enough to win the game.
02:49And then you add the firepower from the bench
02:51and you know that if the game is not going the way that you want
02:53you can possibly turn to it and it can help you in that way.
02:57But I think it puts us in a good place
02:59but I'm very calm in this moment, we've got big tests to come.
03:03We've still got to get our Premier League form fully on track,
03:07we need to be consistent in that competition
03:09so there's still challenges for us to hit.
03:11I think it was a very even game.
03:16I think it was a small market that decided it.
03:18I think our performance was good.
03:21I think the way we played the game, especially in how we built it from behind,
03:32phase one, especially phase two, I think we controlled the game much more.
03:35I think we had some short connections in the middle of the pitch.
03:38I think we found Lucas and Xavi in good position
03:41so I think it was one of our better offensive performances for the season.
03:46You can say it was not like we created 500% chances
03:52but it created some really big chances
03:54and I think Brownstone had some really good saves.
03:56This was a real demonstration of Newcastle's depth this season as well
04:00as highlighting that they are able and also willing to compete on all fronts
04:04with this victory being the Magpies' third in the space of just over a week
04:08with all of them being in different competitions.
04:11Eddie Howe's side will face Fulham in the next round here at St James'
04:15a side who they only faced a few short days ago
04:18in the Premier League winning by two goals to one.
04:21Many of a black and white persuasion will be confident seeing that tie
04:24given the Magpie's strength here at home.
04:27Before that though, Premier League matters return
04:30as Newcastle venture south to London to face West Ham United.
04:34Several here on Tyneside though
04:36will be hoping for another trip to the capital in March
04:39following this win in the Carabao Cup
04:41which has certainly set them on their way.
