Tangmere Parish Council chairman Andrew Irwin helped to shape plans for 1,300 new homes and a primary school in the village. He spoke to Sussex World reporter Sam Morton at a public consultation event, after planning permission was granted.
00:30And what are you hoping to gain from events like this really to make sure the public are fully in the know about what's being proposed?
00:48I'm hoping that the residents will come here and recognise what they spoke about when they talked to us with the neighbourhood bank.
00:55I want to be sure that they feel we've delivered what they've asked for.
01:00And you've been speaking a little bit before about how you kind of want to make Tangmere a nice place to live and somewhere people want to stay in and not have to travel away from.
01:08How important has that been to the overall plan?
01:11One of the things that we faced with at the beginning is we had two parts of Tangmere, the old part and the new part.
01:18We wanted to make sure that what we delivered was one community with facilities that they feel that they can live inside and they don't have to go out of the village to get to.
01:28And that's one of the most important outcomes in the neighbourhood bank is that we made a master plan that delivered everything that we wanted to see.
01:37And hopefully the design plan that we've got now will show that to the public.
01:42And what kind of feedback are you hearing from being at the consultation event today?
01:47I'm waiting, we're only in the first hour, I'm waiting to see when they tell me and they'll come and talk to me since they know me.
01:54They'll come and tell me whether or not they're happy with what they've seen.
01:57But really we will then hold another public meeting and then share it with more residents.
02:02And how important is that feedback and how much of a say do people have in how it progresses in the coming months?
02:09This has been a process that's been going on for many years.
02:12The planning permission has already been approved for the shape of it.
02:17The infrastructure has already been delivered.
02:19What I want to now make sure is people can visualise that and understand that that's what they've asked for in the past.
02:25Yeah, absolutely. And we've discussed a little bit about the archaeological dig that's happened.
02:29How exciting is that for Tangami? And just kind of an added incentive I guess.
02:35Everyone knew that there was going to be archaeology here because of the closeness to Box Road Man.
02:40So the opportunity of this development to go and research these fields was superb.
02:45And they have found an area which they've protected, they're going to call it Roman Fields.
02:50And that is the most important Roman settlement that they've found on our site.
02:54That is fantastic for the development.
02:56And when people will walk and look at it in the future, they'll realise the history.
03:00Yeah, absolutely. And just finally, just to sum up, why is this proposal ideal for Tangami?
03:07And why are you in support of it?
03:10We have to recognise that we need houses for people to live in.
03:14We want our communities to stay together.
03:16I want somewhere my children can come and stay and live in and buy a property and live in a property.
03:21And I want people to be able to stay where they were brought up.
03:24That's important to have development.
03:26If we can make something that is aided and helped by what residents wanted, then we've done a better job.
03:34Thanks, mate.
03:35Thank you for your support and working.
03:36There you are.
03:37Every day, the rest is nothing in your house to go.
