Vientiane's vibrant boat racing festival draws crowds from across nation to honour water guardians

The waters of the Mekong River churned with the power of synchronised oars as Laos celebrated its annual Boat Racing Festival, a captivating cultural and sporting event to mark the conclusion of Buddhist Lent.

During the three-month Buddhist Lent from August to October, monks retreat to their temples to meditate and study, while believers accrue merit through offerings and adherence to religious precepts.

Footage captured on Wednesday shows the Mekong riverbank in Vientiane transforming into a festive arena. Long, sleek boats, crewed by dozens of paddlers from various villages, appeared intense as each team rowed in perfect unison to the roaring cheers of the spectators.

The atmosphere buzzed with energy as vendors sold local food and souvenirs, adding to the vibrant carnival ambience.

“We are the Champa racing team, our village's team. We have been practising for more than 2 months. We are racing on behalf of the Champa company, but we are also the Sen Din village team,” said competitor Sou Li Ya.

“This is the first year I have been to the Boat Racing Festival, and it was so much fun to cheer on the riverbank. The racing team is excellent. I cheered for the JDB team,” added a spectator.

The festival in the capital city of Vientiane is more than just a boat race; it serves as a profound expression of faith and community, intricately linked with Lao Buddhist traditions.

The boat races, the largest and most vibrant during the festival period, honour the protective naga spirits - serpent-like entities and mythical guardians of the water - and give thanks to the Mekong for its life-sustaining waters and abundant resources.
