Sunderland 1 Aston Villa 1 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening from Wearside. Well, the sun is out here, but there's nothing that feels particularly bright about Aston Villa at the moment.
00:08They're still winless in the Premier League. A 1-1 draw at Sunderland, which, you know, at the start of the day, if you'd offered Villa a draw here, they'd probably have taken it.
00:18Sunderland have won their first two games since winning promotion in the Premier League. They felt like there was a bit of momentum here, had a good atmosphere beforehand.
00:24But this was a massive, blown opportunity for Villa. They played against 10 men for effectively more than an hour if you include stoppages.
00:32Ranildo, the Sunderland player, sent off for kicking out at Matty Cash. He couldn't believe he'd been sent off, but frankly, nobody else could believe what he was complaining about.
00:47It's one of the most blatant red cards you will ever see. Huge opportunity for Villa, who had already gone closest to opening in scoring through Evan Gessand, who shot straight at the Sunderland goalkeeper.
00:59That was a big missed opportunity. And you're thinking, well, Villa against 10 men, they'll control the game and eventually, you know, they'll find a way through.
01:06Well, they did find a way through, but they found a way through with their next shot on target, which came from Matty Cash midway through the second half and came more from exasperation than anything else.
01:17I think Matty Cash decided, well, I'm just going to belt this from 25 yards, which he did. And it went through the hands of the goalkeeper, 1-0 Villa.
01:26And yeah, finally, they're in front. Finally, they've scored a Premier League goal. And you're thinking from that point on, they'll go and win the game.
01:32But Sunderland, you know, they kept fighting and they caused a lot of problems in the second half by going direct long balls that Villa couldn't really deal with.
01:40And one of those long balls doesn't get cleared. Gets nodded back into the area by Granit Xhaka and Wilson Isidore scores the equaliser.
01:47Villa hunting the winner, went close through Harvey Elliott and then Ollie Watkins.
01:52You know, you wouldn't want anyone else on the end of a Jadon Sancho cross and stop his time. Watkins completely missed the ball.
01:57Just sums up Villa's start to the season, really.
02:00Unai Emery afterwards said his players were lazy. I believe he's kind of was looking for a different word there.
02:05He was meant to mean soft, I'm told, but either way, not great. And Unai saying he's worried about Villa losing their identity.
02:14All fair comments, but it's his job now to try and sort out the mess.
