As the Federal government released its 2035 emissions targets the Northern Territory Environment Centre launched a plan to re-distribute 1-point-5 billion dollars currently bound for the Middle Arm gas precinct. The proposal involves re-nationalising Darwin Port, subsidising household solar, and investing in battery storage to get the Territory's emissions targets in line with other states and territories.

00:05forecast a dire future for the top end,

00:08environmental groups are pushing for drastic changes

00:11to energy production in the NT.

00:13Both the NT and the federal government

00:15want to pump $1.5 billion of taxpayers' money

00:18into setting up a new gas hub at Middle Arm

00:21and we think there's a better way to spend that money.

00:24Prominent medical experts have gotten on board,

00:26flagging the risks to health in the territory capital.

00:29There are pollutants coming off these gas plants

00:32called volatile organic compounds

00:34that are not adequately being monitored by our regulatory bodies.

00:39In 2022, the federal government promised

00:42a $1.5 billion equity share loan in the Middle Arm gas hub.

00:46The Recharging the Territory report

00:48proposes redistributing that money in three major steps,

00:52renationalising the Port of Darwin,

00:54building a big battery solar farm

00:56and bringing solar to 17,000 homes via subsidised training courses.

01:01But hopes have been somewhat dampened

01:03by the federal government's emissions target,

01:05which they say equates to a 2 degree temperature rise.

01:08The federal government has just condemned, for example,

01:11Alice Springs to over 100 days of 40 degree days per year.

01:17Over a third of every year over 40 degrees.

01:20That's what we will get at 2 degrees warming.

01:22The Northern Territory government was contacted for comment.
