00:00So what are your thoughts, Leroy, on Cain's USF coming into this week?
00:03So one of the things that –
00:05Let's see if Will Blackman joins us.
00:06His guy says that he is, but I haven't seen him.
00:09One of the things we have to do sometimes when we have games like this
00:14is put them in perspective.
00:16Right?
00:18One, Boise State probably shouldn't have been ranked to start off with,
00:22and that's a problem with early rankings.
00:24Sure, definitely.
00:26But they'd be the ranked team.
00:30And Florida basically took a dump on that game.
00:35Like they did everything they could because they always felt like they were
00:41so much better than USF that we would get them on the next drive
00:44or the next play or whatever.
00:46And then the game, the time ran out, and they lost.
00:51But kudos to USF for taking advantage of that.
00:54Sometimes you have teams who don't take advantage of that.
00:56Right, Georgia Tech, back-to-back years.
00:58So is it hard to truly establish how good they are based on those two games?
01:10And I'm not saying that they're not good and don't have talent.
01:14But I'm saying to that level.
01:18No, I get you.
01:18It is a bit of a tough read because it is a little wonky.
01:21You're like, oh, you know, what do these wins mean for them?
01:27But look, it only is what it is.
01:29People thought they were going to lose both the games.
01:31Correct.
01:32And they said they were big underdogs in both of them.
01:35They were like, well, how about this?
01:37And we do know they got a very talented experience quarterback
01:40who's got a lot of reps on them.
01:42And he can do a lot of things.
01:45So I don't know, man.
01:46I'm definitely not overlooking them.
01:48But I think Cristobal knows that, too, coming into this.
01:52So that's going to be an interesting thing with this matchup coming into it.
01:57And while we're excited for it, you guys can, of course, listen to it right here on WQAM.
02:01If you guys want to watch it, it's going to be on the CW this week with this man on the call.
02:06Will Blackman joining us here on the show.
02:08He joins us on the Toyota of Hollywood guest line.
02:10Shop over 2,000 toilets on sale at one location.
02:12Toyota of Hollywood on 441 between Hollywood and Sheridan.
02:14Toyota of Hollywood.com.
02:16Will, how are you, man?
02:18I just had to get a fresh cut, man.
02:19I'm sorry, God.
02:20I'm sorry.
02:21I'm a little late.
02:21I had to get the cut.
02:22My barber that I use in the league is actually here in Miami, so I had to get a cut.
02:30Will, I could have came over there and taped you up, dog.
02:33I could have got you.
02:34No one told me.
02:35I didn't get a memo.
02:36Listen, it wasn't in my email or nothing.
02:38Otherwise, we would have been good.
02:41I would have came to your studio.
02:44It would have been like that.
02:46Here's the deal.
02:47Never did a haircut from a bald guy.
02:49He don't have hair.
02:50How are you going to fade you up?
02:52Because he wishes he had the haircut.
02:55I'd take care of that hair.
02:58What's up, fellas?
03:00Will, what do you think is the matchup coming into this week?
03:03I mean, is UCF the real deal?
03:05Do they got a shot to upset the Canes here?
03:07Or do you think the Canes know now that they've been sneaking up on everybody?
03:12Yeah, I mean, I think for sure they've gained the respect of everybody in Miami.
03:16The thing that stands out about South Florida is, you know, people look like, okay, you know,
03:21they're, you know, they're, you know, whoever it is.
03:25Hey, Will, Will, one second.
03:26Would you mind reconnecting without the AirPods?
03:28Something's going on weird with your audio.
03:30It's a little bit, it's a little strange.
03:33Like, it keeps fading in and out.
03:34So, we want to be able to hear you good.
03:36Am I good now?
03:37Yes.
03:37Okay, it was, I guess my other one, whatever.
03:40I'm sorry, fellas.
03:41No, it's all good.
03:42Yeah, no, I think with South Florida, they definitely gained the respect of their opponent,
03:46especially Miami.
03:47Obviously, the thing that stands out to them, if you really look at this roster, they got
03:52all adults.
03:53It's all, it's all grad students.
03:54You know, that's, they went out there, Coach Golish went out there and got some experienced
03:58guys.
03:59And so, that's what you know, especially like up front, you know, the offensive line, all
04:03grownups, you know, defensive line, adults, you know.
04:06So, that's what really stands out.
04:08So, you know, that's why they're able to fight.
04:10They're able to, you know, battle when the game, you know, becomes close.
04:14It's because they have that experience.
04:16And that's what's really helping them project and win these games.
04:19You think, you know, it's weird because everybody talks about the transfer portal and NIL and
04:26stuff like that.
04:26But then when you go to all these different teams and you see them play, they all seem
04:32to put their, their, their team together differently based on where they are and whether it's power
04:40five or, or, you know, the other leagues.
04:42And so, you might have a lot of teams in this conference that have a lot of fifth year seniors
04:49that, that come in there because they can't go and just get a transfer from Alabama or something
04:55like that.
04:56So, are you seeing a lot of this, especially in conferences like the one USF is in?
05:01Yeah.
05:02I mean, I feel like right now what, what they're doing is they're, they're finding guys who really
05:06want that, that, that last chance to compete, the battle.
05:09Right.
05:09And I'm sure too, you know, one of their selling pitches is their schedule.
05:13Like, Hey, we got Boise.
05:14Hey, we got Miami.
05:15Like, come on this year.
05:16So, they're able to find that.
05:18And I think just overall with the whole portal, there are so many teams trying to, trying to
05:23get off the ground quickly with their team.
05:25You know, I did the SNU at Baylor game last week and, and coach Lashley, you know, he really
05:30went after the portal, portal hard when they move into the ACC.
05:33But now he's in the chance where they, where they won.
05:36And so now because they are winning is helping them recruit the high school kids.
05:40So now they have more high school kids and transfers on their team versus last year.
05:44And so right now, that's the thing too.
05:46If you get, you get portal kids, like you, you got to win.
05:49That's how you get the high school kids.
05:50So it goes hand in hand.
05:51Well, what did you think of Miami's stuff?
05:54Obviously they're gone from last week.
05:55They're taking on Bethune.
05:56So you got to take care of business.
05:57What did you think of their opening week performance against Notre Dame?
06:00I thought it was awesome because Notre Dame is, you know, known as the, probably one of
06:06the best coach schools by, by Marcus Freeman.
06:09They're going to be disciplined, tough.
06:11They got the athletes, they got the best corner.
06:12They got some of the best receivers, always have a top D line and secondary.
06:16But I thought it was a huge statement win out the gate to go against a team like that,
06:22who, you know, competed for a national championship.
06:25So to do that in that fashion, I thought it was, I thought it was awesome, a tough game
06:31of a really fought home game.
06:33And for me, it's, it's kind of like, man, when I guys, when I grew up and even playing
06:38growing up in the nineties, playing in 2000, like, like Miami, like that was, that was it.
06:42You know, that was one of the teams that was, if not the team that was handling the business.
06:47So for me in college football, when Miami is doing well, like college football is all good.
06:51Yeah. Well, you were in that, you were in those years where the, the, the vaunted move to
06:56the ACC, which feels like it has cursed Miami ever since they left the big East, the Boston
07:01college and Virginia tech and Miami all going, it's just like, Oh, they haven't been able
07:06to get over the hump and finally win this conference.
07:08It's been a long, yeah, it's been actually, yeah, it's been forever.
07:10You're right.
07:11I just saw that.
07:11That's crazy.
07:12But yeah, I mean, right.
07:14I'm excited, man.
07:14Florida football so far is back, you know, um, obviously just talking about the conference
07:19alone, Florida state, you know, Miami, uh, just, and plus, obviously it's all Florida
07:25now making noise.
07:25I think right now, like they're doing a good job of, of keeping everybody, keeping
07:29everybody at home.
07:30You know, a lot of this talent was, was leaving the state, going to other places.
07:33I mean, you, you out there, you got people from Florida playing at USC, like what's
07:37going on?
07:37I live in Cali, so I'm seeing these Florida kids out there.
07:40Um, but it's cool when all the kids are staying home and guys are battling guys as
07:45encoders are recruiting the same kids.
07:47So that's, that's, that's fun for me to see that.
07:49Well, I want to go to UCF, I mean, USF and, and Miami, um, Miami has shown that offensively
07:59and defensively upfront, they are big, they are strong, they are dominant and they beat
08:06Notre Dame at their own game because everybody said, Oh, you got to be scared.
08:10The offensive line, defensive line is dominant for, for Notre Dame.
08:14Um, do you see, is there anybody or anyone that could compete on the USF front on either
08:21side with that size, that talent?
08:24Because I think that's where the game is going to probably be won.
08:28Yeah.
08:28You're not wrong.
08:29I think collectively, Leroy, Leroy, that, um, it's going to, it's going to come down to
08:33that because I would say early on in the game, yeah, they're going to do some things, but
08:37then they're going to deal with that man, uh, you know, Reuben Bain over there, uh, who
08:41mean for a full 60 minutes, man, he does not let up.
08:44I mean, he's going to, he's making plays, he's getting picks, he's getting sacks, he's getting
08:48TFLs, he's doing everything.
08:49So I think it's going to be a matter of, can they sustain it all game long?
08:53Can they collectively just mentally like finish the fight?
08:57Cause there's one thing you can have experience and what have you, know what to do, be smart
09:01and all that stuff.
09:02But when it comes to push, comes to shove and that, that monster, you know, starts growing
09:06a tail and some horns, starts spitting fireballs at you.
09:08Are you ready to handle that?
09:09Are you, are you down to handle that situation?
09:12So, um, especially like what if USF gets down and they got to start throwing a ball, you know
09:17what I'm saying?
09:17So now are you going to be in, are you going to be able to handle that situation there?
09:21So, uh, Tom Patel, I mean, right now it's, it's like, man, they've been doing a great
09:25job, but you're right.
09:25They're dealing with the different beasts when it comes to Miami.
09:28What's the, uh, what's the scariest thing that Byron Brown can do against the Canes?
09:32Cause he's been, I mean, he's, he's got, it feels like weapons, uh, on the feet and
09:36with the arm.
09:37Yeah.
09:38I think it's all the above.
09:39I think like you're, you're so, you're so ready for him to run the ball, but then, you know,
09:44he got two receivers averaging 20 yards of catch.
09:47You know what I'm saying?
09:47So it's like, he'll, he'll let it go one to the other.
09:50So it's just a matter of, I think the thing for him is just continue to trust his protection
09:55because there's a lot of times he would bail out early and he'll always have run to the
09:58side where Ruben is.
09:59You know what I'm saying?
10:00So Ruben's going to be ready for that.
10:01So, um, you know, I think for him, just the overall dynamics, I mean, there's the comparison
10:07of stat wise with Jaden Daniels, what he did at LSU and what have you.
10:11So you have that, but, um, he, his overall playmaking ability, like that's what you like.
10:17So have you liked, uh, Carson Beck's early going with the cans?
10:20I know there was a lot of pressure on him coming into this year.
10:23What have you thought?
10:24Yeah, I do like Carson Beck, man.
10:25Just cause I feel like he came from a lot of pressure.
10:27He played at Georgia.
10:28I mean, that's being a quarterback there alone is a lot of pressure.
10:30So I think now he's in a fresh situation, fresh start and, and he feels good and he looks
10:35like, he looks real comfortable.
10:36You know, um, he's actually a bigger quarterback than I thought.
10:41I met him at the ACC kickoff, but that's a big dude.
10:43Um, so yeah, yeah, he's, he's comfortable, man.
10:46And you love to see that for him.
10:49This, uh, this kid, they got Malachi Tony.
10:51I mean, he kind of burst onto the scene that first game, but 17 years old.
10:54I mean, he, he's, I think everybody's kind of raving.
10:57Like, what is this case?
10:58Kane's career going to look like already at this age?
11:01Yeah.
11:01I mean, let's let, I mean, let, let the man enjoy this year one day at a time, one day
11:06at a time, man.
11:06He is electric bill.
11:07Like he doesn't look like you on the field.
11:09He looks like he's been there.
11:10He looks like a senior when he's playing.
11:11So yeah, he, he's dynamic, man.
11:13He's, he has a, he already has a pro body.
11:16He's very, very strong.
11:17Uh, he, he, he's insanely smart just based on the two games.
11:21Like he knows where to go.
11:22He knows what to do in terms of whether it's beating the guy off the press or, or finding,
11:27you know, open spots in the zone.
11:29Like he's, he's a mentally, uh, mature receiver.
11:32Talking to Will Blackman.
11:33You guys can catch him on the call this week on the CW from Miami USF.
11:37Hey, Will, before we get you out of here, uh, your time in the league, is it ever a good
11:41thing when, uh, you're having a players only meeting in week two?
11:44Cause the dolphins had that this week and I feel like that's a bad sign.
11:49Look, man, I, I'm so concerned with the dolphins, man.
11:52Um, just, yeah, overall, like that, here's the thing.
11:58It's one thing to, you could be very, very smart.
12:00You can be a smart coach.
12:01You could be a inspirational coach.
12:04Um, but the hard thing about when you become a head coach, especially in the NFL, you're
12:07a CEO as well.
12:08So you're, you're so busy with not just with the team, but everything outside that has
12:13to do with the organization.
12:14And the hardest thing to do is to capture the team.
12:17That's the most important thing is to capture the team.
12:19Um, and yeah, when things are going well, they're going well, but what happens when it
12:24doesn't, you face adversity, like are you built to handle that?
12:27And I think so far what you've seen, like it hasn't been going that well, you know, when,
12:31when you have players like Raheem Mostert speaking out, like that to me was the ultimate
12:36red flag when he started speaking out.
12:38Um, and you can see the frustration with Tua every interview, like he's getting real defensive
12:43with all the, you know, every time he's going to interview.
12:45Um, and I think it's, yeah, I mean, the writers on the wall, man, um, they got to hold
12:49it down, but it's, it's tough to see.
12:52I've seen it before.
12:53Yeah.
12:54Well, we got a lot more faith in the college team right now than the, uh, we'll look forward
12:58to watching this weekend.
12:58Well, thanks for the time, man.
13:00All right, man.
13:00Thanks bro.
13:01There you go.
13:02Check, uh, check will out this weekend.
13:04I'll tell you what there's not.
