00:00With X-Day of Future Past, the idea is simple: face the competition.
00:05Two years earlier, Marvel Studios had a hit with Avengers, which had the strength to bring all these heroes together.
00:10DC is set to reunite Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
00:14Fox has no choice but to strike hard in turn and goes all out by bringing together the entire cast of all the films.
00:20and justifying it with a scenario that will strangely hold up.
00:24Matthew Vaughn, the director of X-First Class, had a very specific plan in mind.
00:28A trilogy that would include a sequel to his first film, then the grand finale with Day of Future Past.
00:34But Fox, in a bit of a hurry to catch up with the competition, will go straight to producing the latter.
00:39by revamping it somewhat under the direction of the man who brought the saga to the big screen, Bryan Singer.
00:45In the meantime, Jennifer Lawrence's popularity has exploded and Mystique will become the central character of this story.
00:50which tells how a man managed to develop almost indestructible robots from Raven's DNA,
00:56able to track and kill mutants who manage to escape them thanks to temporal magnifying glasses created by Kitty
01:01which we already know and which can also pass through the elements.
01:04Eric and Charles' plan to get back together to fight this common enemy
01:07is to send Logan back to the 70s in order to change the events that led to the creation of these robots
01:13who are called the Sentinels.
01:15This is therefore a more than ambitious postulate, carried out with a master's hand.
01:19managing to bring together a cast that was then impossible to bring together on paper
01:22and offering various pieces of bravery that I will not deprive myself of saluting here.
01:26Already the casting, old and new, is still as incredible as ever.
01:30The Charles of the 70s is incredibly classy.
01:32Wolverine is only getting younger, just look at the evolution of his physique since the first film.
01:37And the return of various characters who marked the beginning of the franchise is downright pleasant.
01:41Even Omar Sy is a mutant. And, admittedly, a rather convincing mutant.
01:45The new musical themes also mix with the old ones and we find the original theme
01:49which, I find, is one of the most striking in the superhero universe.
01:52And here we are, in fact, two seconds.
01:56As at the beginning of the saga, the introduction is as striking for its gravity as for its effectiveness.
02:01The premise is terrible.
02:03Mutants and humans who might breed mutants are kept in prisons.
02:07The X-Men are defeated.
02:08The image is powerful. It's the apocalypse.
02:11But some resist.
02:12And after this now legendary credits,
02:15we witness the attempt of some mutants to fight against Sentinels.
02:18The scene is perfectly cut,
02:20playing with the power of certain mutants to move from one fight to another.
02:23It's very fun.
02:24Especially those portals that offer something visually interesting.
02:27Within minutes, we become aware of the destructive force of the Sentinels.
02:31We believe it when we see them easily destroy our heroes of yesteryear.
02:34We also understand the importance of Kitty and how she manages to escape the various attacks
02:38thanks to short time travel which allows them to know the position of the Sentinels in advance.
02:44We are immediately aware of the gravity of the situation and the danger hanging over our heroes.
02:49This is the strength of the film, which never distorts the seriousness it advocates.
02:52despite a few moments of levity which do not harm the whole, quite the contrary.
02:56The character of Quicksilver is a good example of this,
02:58and Eric's escape scene is a masterclass of the genre.
03:01It pops up 45 minutes into the film, and no one expects such a scene at that point.
03:06Suggesting speed with slow motion is brilliant,
03:08so much so that DC will not hesitate to copy the concept for its Flash character.
03:12Just compare this scene to all the scenes where the same character uses his powers in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
03:18No desire to go looking for something different.
03:20No vision.
03:21While here, we highlight the importance of a mutant's powers,
03:24with effects that allow the scene to be more than it would have been in 90% of other productions of the genre.
03:29The whole bias of the film goes in this direction.
03:32The condition of mutants is still at the heart of the story.
03:35Mystique is the key, and Wolverine helps bridge the gap between past and future.
03:39An extended version exists with the Malicia scenes which will be cut from the original cut,
03:43the character being deemed useless.
03:45Just like this scene, by the way.
