00:00Hello Emotions, today we're going to talk about a movie that I didn't like at all.
00:06And don't mind that, it's just my vizier headdress.
00:08A great vizier must be able to take care of his hair too.
00:13Yeah, okay, it's a mask, stop judging, it's a mask, okay?
00:15I'm trying to save what little hair I have left.
00:17So, The Sun King.
00:20The Sun King is a police drama, a social thriller behind closed doors,
00:24directed by Vincent Maël Cardona, co-author of the screenplay with Olivier Demanguel,
00:31released in 2025, presented in a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival,
00:37released in theaters on August 27, 2025.
00:40And the synopsis is as follows, we are in a PMU bar in Élabri de Versailles, called Le Roi Soleil.
00:47A regular discovers he has won more than 200 million euros in the lottery,
00:51and he's off to collect his winnings, except it doesn't go as planned.
00:55and it's going to turn into a bit of a hostage situation.
01:00And we're going to see lots of different human beings, from different backgrounds,
01:03who will try to make fun of each other to justify the fact
01:07that they are the ones who won the lottery.
01:10So they're going to alter the truth to try to make it so that...
01:13I assure you, this is not a spoiler, it is really the beginning of the story.
01:18So now I understand the meaning of a film presented at the Cannes Film Festival,
01:25because, throughout the entire film, I wanted to smoke.
01:30It was long. It was terribly long.
01:32It was too long for what it was.
01:34Actually, my opinion on this film is that, technically, it is well made.
01:41I have nothing to say. The technique is very clean.
01:44The light is very very beautiful.
01:46In many shots, in many scenes, it's magnificent.
01:49It's well managed.
01:51As for the acting, it's good too.
01:56Even if some characters are sometimes not very credible.
01:59In fact, my perception of credibility has shifted to the sense that...
02:03They're trying to cover up a murder, okay?
02:05And today, we live in a time where many people are passionate about true crime.
02:12There are tons of true crime videos on the internet that explain how to hide bodies.
02:16There are tons of crime series that talk about this.
02:19NCIS, New York, Special Unit.
02:22In fact, I believe most people have a minimal understanding of how to hide a body.
02:29And there, we will follow a team of beginners.
02:32But then, when I say beginners, I really mean beginners at...
02:36I wanted to give them pies.
02:37That is to say, it is even grotesque at that level.
02:42The first thing that comes to mind if you have to hide a body is to watch out for fingerprints.
02:47They are trying to make up a story.
02:48And of course, in their story, there is the problem of the fingerprints not working.
02:53This is not a spoiler, it is not related to the film.
02:55But it's the kind of enormity that is there, that is present and that made it difficult for me to stay in the film.
03:02It took me out of the movie.
03:03There are things where I was like, but wait, but anyway...
03:06And what's more, they're cops.
03:08That's the worst part.
03:09It's just that these are cops making rookie mistakes.
03:12So we feel like we're following a team of interns and cops on a rotating basis.
03:18Even, perhaps even alternation.
03:20And so, it's a little grotesque.
03:22Which is a shame, because the storyline, the basic idea, is really interesting.
03:29Seeing the worst of humanity tearing itself apart for...
03:33Because in fact, it's a theme of greed.
03:36And very human, very social.
03:39The theme is fascinating, but it could have been so much better.
03:43It's really two hours of film to finally get to...
03:46Ah, all that for that.
03:48So, I absolutely do not recommend it.
03:51I don't recommend going to the cinema to see it.
03:53I think it's a TF1 TV movie that's more than enough to watch on TV.
04:00And that's a shame.
04:02It's a shame, because again, the film is good in itself.
04:06The theme is good.
04:07The technique is excellent.
04:09Above all, once again, above all the light.
04:11Although some of the framing was a little weird.
04:13At one point, there is a sequence shot that does a sort of 360, which follows one of the characters who leaves.
04:21And the sequence shot ends with an overturned chair.
04:25You say to yourself, well, okay, this is an element, this is a Chekhov's gun that is placed there to be used later.
04:30Like, for example, it's the little detail they didn't think about that will get them caught.
04:35Absolutely not.
04:38No way.
04:39The movie is over, I have no idea why there was that shot of that chair.
04:42Other than maybe the cameraman has a wood fetish, I don't know.
04:48But there are plans like that, in fact, that make no sense.
04:52And conversely, there are ideas for editing, sequence shots, or even sometimes...
05:02So, I don't know if it's a single sequence shot or if it's fake sequence shots,
05:05but there are some ideas that are extremely interesting.
05:09And there are others where it falls a little flat, where you don't understand why.
05:13The story editing, it starts to get interesting at the beginning.
05:18And actually, it's a shame, I think there would have been more dynamism and more impact.
05:21In fact, if there had been more randomness between the possible present or the possible future
05:31and what is currently happening in their room,
05:33In fact, I think what would have been interesting would have been to see how they agree on an idea.
05:38and see the direct impact it has on the present.
05:40For example, there, they made such a mistake, and hop, we see the commissioner who says
05:45"Oh yeah, but you forgot to tell us that there was such and such a thing?"
05:49And hop, see where the problem and this decision comes from.
05:51I don't know if what I'm saying is clear, but
05:52A better leap between past and present, I think it could have boosted the thing.
05:57Because there are actually too many death events.
06:04which makes it a kind of spoof movie
06:10closer to the somewhat crappy horror series, The Final Destination
06:19than a closed-door film where I came out in mode
06:24"Okay, the choice of closed doors makes sense, okay, it's incredible, like the Hateful Eight."
06:30I think so, no, it wasn't the Dirty Eight, I don't remember.
06:32Yes, I think it was The Hateful Eight, the last closed-door show I saw, but...
06:34Anyway, it seemed like a really textbook answer.
06:38of a guy who came out, apparently came out of film school
06:42and who just applied by A plus B his formula that he learned well
06:46and there you have it, it's a nice application, it's very functional.
06:52Now, is it worth the trip to the cinema for this?
06:55My answer is no and I think I would put him...
06:59Finally, I would be willing to pay...
07:03€1.92 to see it.
07:08Yeah, no more.
