Energy industry leaders were greeted by protestors today as the Northern Territory's annual resources conference opened in Darwin. It comes days after an ABC investigation revealed gas giant Santos and federal regulators concealed a major methane leak from the public in what’s been described as a "national scandal".

00:09For the previous 20 years, so that's most of my life living here in the NT, there has
00:14been a massive methane gas leak.
00:18Someone needs to be accountable for what's been happening over the last 20 years.
00:23In Adelaide 2, outrage over gas giant Santos keeping news of the gas leak secret for years
00:32and their plans to continue using the defective tank for its new Barossa project.
00:36It is not just Darwin's issue, it's not just a territory issue, this is a huge issue for
00:42all of Australia and for all of our climate.
00:45It is a danger to all of us.
00:47Hoping to deliver their message directly to Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher, the group descended
00:52on the conference for NT Resources Week.
00:55We also expect Santos to front up and face the community.
00:59But their target was a no-show, Mr Gallagher cancelling plans to deliver his keynote speech.
01:04Instead, the company's vice president outlined plans to inject carbon pollution into the seabed.
01:10It's a controversial idea, still unproven, but Santos says will help reduce emissions.
01:16And that's becoming even more important with the Barossa project north of here nearing completion
01:21and the company's plans to expand into the Beedaloo Basin.
01:26Despite widespread community concern, the vice president sending a message the company
01:31can be trusted.
01:32There is no better operator than Santos to bring the energy, economic and social potential
01:37of the Beedaloo to life.
01:40We can leave the ideology to our friends out the front with their flags and their drums.
01:45Also today, Japanese oil and gas giant INPEX flagging its own major expansion.
01:51We won the company's plan to make sure that they're ready to be recorded for their
