00:00G'day, I'm Paul. This is a Ferrari 296 GTB road car. I can't believe I'm saying this,
00:25but that is a Ferrari 296 GT3 race car. And don't fret, we have a race car driver here that I'm
00:31about to introduce you to who is driving that car and has won a lot of races in it as well.
00:37Importantly as well, while these look the same on the outside, the road car actually has electric
00:41assistance with an electric motor effectively and a turbocharged V6 petrol engine. The race car on
00:46the other hand has no electric assistance. It is just a twin turbocharged V6 petrol engine. So
00:52it's going to be close, but I reckon this with the electric assistance is probably going to sneak
00:56ahead. As a reminder, this is a regional airport runway, so the surface here isn't very good. So
01:00it's going to be hard for this car to get traction, let alone the race car, which is on wets because
01:04it was raining earlier. But let's get straight into it.
01:12Launching on, go, three, two, one.
01:22Oh, we're both struggling for traction. Oh my God, this is fast.
01:35Oh my God, this is so fast.
01:37Holy crap, this is fast.
01:56I haven't driven one of these before. This is literally my first time.
02:00Elliot, this thing is on another planet in terms of speed. Like I was just saying before,
02:09I haven't driven a 296 before up until this literal very moment. And I thought going to V6,
02:15they kind of muffed it. But this thing is phenomenally quick. And I know that you're
02:19in a race car with little traction off the line, but I was not expecting it to be this fast.
02:23Let's go back. We'll do one more run, just because your tyres will be warm now. And then
02:31I reckon we do a rolling race where I think things will change a little in your favour.
02:37Launching on, go, three, two, one, go.
02:41Oh, both got a good start there. Oh my God, this thing is quick.
03:02Oh, I missed that gear shift.
03:11Yeah, I missed the gear shift there, but I think the results still would have been the
03:24same here. Struggling with traction off the line.
03:26A little bit closer.
03:29That was good. I had a slight moment there where this was twitchy and I'm like, well,
03:32the last thing I want to do is bin this into your car.
03:35Now, Elliot, we've removed Alborz from the equation because he's fairly hopeless at driving
03:42normal cars, let alone race cars. How did you get into racing? Because you've been driving
03:46this for a while now, but you race on computers as well?
03:50Yeah, it's an unconventional start. So for me, it was all sim racing. Started in Gran Turismo,
03:55literally in an IKEA Swedish chair in my bedroom.
03:58That is so cool.
03:59And then moved into more sim racing and then eventually into Radicals. Got some sponsorship
04:04support, which I'm extremely grateful for. And then all of a sudden, I'm driving this
04:08thing.
04:08I mean, that is incredible. For anyone watching, like sim racing is where a lot of people start.
04:12Then go-karting. I'm pretty exceptional at go-karting. So I think I do have a chance here
04:17in GT3 and then F1 eventually. Probably not though. What's it like to drive a race car? Because
04:23you're sitting in there, you're like fully strapped in. You can't really see much around you.
04:27How does it work on a track when you've got all these cars dive bombing you and just trying
04:30to get around you all the time?
04:31Yeah, I think you can't see much, but you can see kind of what you need. And I think
04:34you just develop a sense of where everyone else is around you. But yeah, compared to the
04:39road car, very little vision. And also it seems not as much power.
04:43Yes. And very little traction as well. Like you launching there is hard work. Like you
04:47eventually nail it, but you need heat in the tyres. We're on wets today because it was
04:50raining before. The road car has hybrid assistance, which you don't have here. That is like a missile.
04:56And to think that you can buy that today and just do the speeds that people do is ridiculous.
05:00So what we're going to do now, we're going to set up for the rolling race where I think you're going
05:03to have a much better chance because we'll go to that line and we'll both punch it and then
05:07we'll see what happens at the end. So helmet up. I'm going to jump in my car and just put the
05:11heated seats on and then we're going to go for a rolling race. Now we actually sponsor this car,
05:15which is good that it's winning in the real series, but I wonder if I should just let it win
05:19to make sure that we stay on top. Okay. So now we're going to do a roll race. So the way this works is
05:24about 30 kilometres an hour to the first white line, then we're both going to mash it. I'm going
05:29to let Elliot lead the charge though, because he can't really see me and we're just going to figure
05:33it out as we go. And then it'll be all the way over to the quarter mile line. It's going to be
05:37close because that thing, once it has traction and it's moving, I think it's going to be a very
05:41different story to a standing start. So let's see what happens. All right, Elliot, you lead the charge.
05:54Oh, come on, baby.
06:16Yes.
06:22Let's go.
06:24That was so close. Oh, man, I cannot believe how fast this thing is. How did you go with
06:35traction moving off the line there? Yeah, it still spun up a little bit in first, but nowhere near as much
06:42as it stands at the start. Do you want to have one more shot? Yeah, I can probably get a bit more.
06:47All right, let's do it. Do one more shot. All righty, let's do this. Lead the way.
06:54Yes.
07:18oh yes baby oh man
07:32oh man that was that was absolutely unreal this 296 is so so fast it is ridiculous
07:42absolutely ridiculous all the weight reduction you have over there just can't really sort of
07:47make enough of a difference it is just crazy now this is the part where i'm going to be quiet and
07:52you can hear these cars going down the quarter mile and see the times they set on our airport runway
08:17so
08:24so
08:29well there you go that was that was fun it's not every day you have a race car literally right
