00:00Time to talk some fantasy football with Joe Pizzoppia.
00:02You catch him weekends here on Fantasy Sports Today with Matt Stryker.
00:06And I know a lot of you guys are getting ready for your drafts coming up over the next month.
00:09Let's bring Joe in. Of course, Fantasy Black Book is in full swing.
00:13It's fantasy season, Joe. The month of August is here.
00:16Time to figure out what we're going to do.
00:19Yeah, absolutely. And look, we're in that period, too,
00:21where you're getting all this news from training camp,
00:24and some of it is important, and some of it is a lot of nonsense.
00:28You know, kind of believe what you see in some of these motions,
00:32and I think that's something that's very important to all the machinations of the coach speak
00:36and all these things that time of year.
00:37You really got to peel through a lot of the nonsense to get to the important stuff.
00:41And the less you hear about a situation, I'm learning even in my 40s now,
00:46the less you hear, the worse it probably is.
00:49Just putting that out there because Najee Harris,
00:52I don't know if he's going to be a pirate or a running back
00:53or what's going to happen here in the next couple weeks,
00:55but I can't get any word anywhere about what that progress is,
00:59and I think that's something to just start to understand as you hit these drafts.
01:02You saw Najee Harris' draft this weekend.
01:04He drafted so late.
01:06He ended up going in, like, the 13th round.
01:08That's how late he went because people just didn't know,
01:11and I think that's a good practice this time of year.
01:13If you still know, just look somewhere else for another draft pick.
01:17Yeah, and listen, we're relying on a lot of the people who cover the teams,
01:20but the good news is that, Joe, as you know, once these preseason broadcasts begin,
01:26that's when, you know, you've got to get intel at that point.
01:28I mean, they're doing pregame shows for five hours before these preseason games.
01:31You're going to find out a lot more at that time.
01:33All right, so speaking of the Chargers, you know, this is an interesting one for me.
01:37Potential target for you, and I suppose this is because of his ADP this year.
01:42ADP, by the way, for those unfamiliar, average draft pick position.
01:45And so, Justin Herbert, two years ago, Joe, was one of the top quarterbacks in fantasy off the board.
01:51Now, because of the way that the offense is run and sort of a couple of steps back,
01:55it's no longer the case.
01:56But I suppose that you think where he's being taken is going to be way too low
02:01based on the season or at least too low in your mind.
02:03Well, he's free right now in single quarterback leagues,
02:06and I think that's a statement everybody should, you know,
02:09kind of ring in their ears and hear for the truth because, you know,
02:12when he came in as a rookie, he was QB9 that season,
02:14set a rookie passing record.
02:16Then the next year, he was QB2 in fantasy, 5,000 yards passing in his second year.
02:21Now, I understand it's a different coaching regime, as you said.
02:24You know, the Greg Roman offense is a different look, a little bit more run heavy.
02:27However, that doesn't matter.
02:29Justin Herbert's still going to throw the ball.
02:31Last year, he had 332 attempts.
02:33I think that can push closer to that 400 mark this year.
02:37And if it does, he's going to finish well above last year's rank,
02:40which was QB12 overall.
02:42He was also very efficient last year, just three interceptions.
02:44He had as many interceptions in that playoff loss as he did in the entire season last year.
02:50And you look at Dak Prescott, you look at Justin Herbert.
02:53These are guys that are capable of finishing his top five QBs,
02:56but both of them you can basically draft in the second to last round of your drafts.
03:00And I think that's something that people should pay attention to.
03:02And in Superflex leagues as well,
03:04Herbert as a second quarterback kind of floats around a little bit longer,
03:07and he has the upside to finish way higher.
03:09And, of course, that addition of Trey Harris, I think, can really help that offense.
03:13Yeah, I would agree.
03:14Now, you know, it's interesting when you look at sort of down teams this year,
03:18and you're fading a player on a very down team.
03:21But, you know, truth be told, you know, you can find diamonds, Joe, on some of these bad teams.
03:26But I believe Chris Olave is not one of them.
03:29No, one of the phases, Chris Olave, and it's a lot of his circumstance going against him, right?
03:35You have circumstances of the concussion issues he had last year,
03:37and that's always concerning when you've had multiple concussions.
03:40And then on top of that, you have the scenario where you have a rookie quarterback in Tyler Shuck,
03:45or is it Spencer Rattler, or, or, or.
03:48And in the Black Book, I talk a lot about the offensive ecosystems.
03:50Well, the offensive ecosystems that grades offensive line, head coach, quarterback,
03:55quarterback, skilled position players, the Saints grade out at the bottom of the barrel.
04:00And that's unfortunate because we're not quite used to that.
04:02Even the years of Derek Carr, there was some good fantasy value there.
04:05It's just not going to be there this year.
04:06So although Chris Olave is a good talent, the injury questions are a problem.
04:10And then couple that with the suspect quarterback play.
04:13I just don't see how he returns his ADP or his value there.
04:17And if you look around where Chris Olave is going, I think the Ted Rowe and McMillans,
04:21I think some of the guys like Jamison Williams,
04:23there's a lot of guys around there that I think are just far more,
04:26I think, exciting investments at this point,
04:29because Olave to me just has more questions than he does answers.
04:33Cortland Sutton back on the Pisa Pia map.
04:35It feels like this is a tradition, like the Masters.
04:38I feel like it's an every other year thing for you with Cortland Sutton.
04:42Does that seem fair?
04:44Well, I mean, look, last year I was cautiously optimistic,
04:47but I think the problem was, you know, he had some difficult situations.
04:51I mean, Nathaniel Hackett, one of the worst head coaches I think we've ever seen.
04:55And that's saying something because we saw Urban Meyer as a head coach in the NFL.
04:58So there was just no winning for him.
05:01And then Sean Payton comes in with a real offense and a real quarterback.
05:04And guess what?
05:05Cortland Sutton's good again.
05:06And the thing about Cortland Sutton,
05:08I think everyone should pay attention to is where he finished last year.
05:11Right now he's going as wide receiver 22 overall.
05:13But last season he finished as wide receiver 13.
05:16And his numbers weren't extraordinary necessarily.
05:19They're very repeatable.
05:2181 receptions, 1,081 yards, and eight touchdowns.
05:24I think you can copy and paste that season into this year.
05:27And even with RJ Harvey and even with Evan Ingram,
05:30I still say that Cortland Sutton is the go-to guy.
05:32He's the comfort.
05:33He's the safety blanket.
05:34He is the one that has that connectivity with Bo Nix.
05:36So to me, even if he just repeats, he's going to far exceed his ADP.
05:41He is much closer to a wide receiver one than a wide receiver two.
05:44And he's the wide receiver one on his team.
05:45He's the number one target guy.
05:47And I think you want that in as many offenses you can get.
05:50And you can get him as a wide receiver three.
05:52That's fantastic.
05:52In a lot of drafts, I have been able to do that.
05:54But I will tell you this.
05:55I think people are sleeping on him because he is going right back to back
05:58with DK Metcalf, who's got an Arthur Smith offense
06:01with an aging Aaron Rodgers.
06:03And he's kind of the only guy there.
06:05He's got to learn some new stuff.
06:07To me, it's easy.
06:08I'd much rather have Cortland Sutton than I would DK Metcalf back to back.
06:12You can catch Joe every single Sunday morning along with Matt Stryker
06:17on Fantasy Sports Today as we continue our conversation
06:21about the upcoming fantasy season.
06:23Joe, we've finally given up on the Chiefs, right?
06:25Like, we understand they're going to win a lot of games.
06:27We understand they're going to be very competitive.
06:30But this narrative forever was like, oh, it's Mahomes.
06:33And whoever he's got, it's got to be somebody.
06:36I mean, it feels like it's time to give up on that, right?
06:38I think it's time to at least give up on it for now.
06:41I think it's a transition period for the Chiefs.
06:43Travis Kelsey is aging.
06:45I am fading away from him at this age.
06:47And Xavier Worthy, I think the ADP is just far too high.
06:50Xavier Worthy, another guy going in that Ted McMillan area, George Pickens area.
06:54I mean, George Pickens is 24 years old, and now he's got Dak Prescott,
06:57and he's playing on the other side of CeeDee Lamb.
06:59I know what George Pickens is.
07:00I know what he can be.
07:01Xavier Worthy, I still don't know.
07:03I saw some flashes at the end of last year.
07:05But we don't have clarity in the Rushy Rice situation.
07:08As you mentioned, you know, sometimes, you know, certain teams, even great ones,
07:12even dynasties, go through transition periods.
07:14The New England Patriots did, right?
07:16So, of course, the Chiefs are kind of going through that right now,
07:19and they're kind of trying to retool.
07:21I just don't see the ADP of Xavier Worthy being that easy to return
07:26where he's currently being drafted.
07:27I think that's a problem.
07:28The same thing with Kelsey, too.
07:29He's going around the same spot as a guy like Mark Andrews,
07:31a guy like Evan Ingram.
07:33And I would much rather have those guys at this stage of their career
07:35because Kelsey clearly lost a step last season.
07:38So the Chiefs, I think, are going to have a hard time winning that division.
07:41The Broncos defense is extraordinary, especially in the secondary.
07:44And then I think that Chargers team is very well coached.
07:46And Amari and Hampton, you know, that's the other piece of that puzzle.
07:49If you go back to those great Herbert years, he had Austin Eckler
07:51giving him the yards after catch.
07:53He didn't have that last year with J.K. Dobbins
07:55and the rest of the running backs.
07:57Amari and Hampton brings that back to the table.
07:59So to come full circle on Herbert there for a second,
08:02that's another guy that could really help Herbert
08:04and kind of pad those stats for him.
08:06So I think the Chiefs are in trouble this season.
08:09And the last 25 years, only one team has gone back to the Super Bowl
08:12after losing the Super Bowl.
08:14And that team was the New England Patriots, and they won it.
08:16And it's Tom Brady, which means, guess what?
08:18You can throw it out the window because it's an anomaly.
08:20It's Tom Brady.
08:21So the Chiefs could be in for more of a longer transition,
08:24I think, than people realize.
08:25And I think that division is up for grabs.
08:26Yeah, it could be fascinating to see how far the Chiefs fall,
08:31if they do fall.
08:32Okay, last player we're going to discuss here.
08:35You don't see this a lot, Joe, in the NFL.
08:38A guy comes in as a first-year player, or whatever he is, Jordan Mason,
08:42and looks like a superstar in any position in the NFL.
08:46So good to the fact that they trade him immediately after he does it.
08:49And that's exactly what the 49ers did.
08:51I think they made a mistake because Garendo's hurt already.
08:54I don't know why they did that.
08:55But Mason, to me, looked fantastic.
08:58Yeah, I agree.
08:59And not only that, you've already heard that Kevin O'Connell wants to use him
09:02as the 1B.
09:04And Aaron Jones has a lot of tread on his tires ahead of him.
09:06Mason, to me, is a far better investment in his ADP than Aaron Jones is.
09:10And I think Jordan Mason showed you last year he can carry that workload.
09:13He is a really sneaky, good pickup at the running back position this season.
09:18Sunday mornings on Fantasy Sports Today, Joe Pizzapia and Matt Stryker.
09:22Joe, we'll catch up again soon.
09:23Thanks again.
